That is great but I think I like the original half-smile even better for an evil character. The current portrait looks flat. The original picture looks like she is going to mess you up and enjoy doing it. Anyway to (easily) do an alternative version with the half-smile?
@Koson Check this one out: http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Syntia13/Baldur s Gate stuff/Mask3.png I pretty much improvised the design, and it's not so much 'carved' as 'scratched' in the scull. I didn't put much care into it, as I didn't know if you'll like the design. If you do, I'll try to improve the quality. If you don't, could you sketch in what would you like it to look like, and I'll try to carve it?
@Syntia13: I took the liberty to abuse the 4-in-1-build-yourself-a-hero (page 3) for my own purpose :P (and removed the weired color-thingie in the armor) Might use it for Keldorn in my upcoming BG2 run and haven't found a decent replacement pic. ty
If you want to find larger portraits, I'd recommend searching for custom Neverwinter Nights portraits, because they tend to be provided in much higher resolutions. ex.: http://ettugamer.com/zenphoto/N/Neverwinter Nights 1/Portraits
I had this NPC, once upon a time. A bard, a narcissist with ridiculously bloated ego, with charisma and intelligence to back it. He used to use Eldoth's portrait. Not anymore, for I finally found a perfect face and perfect outfit and perfect environment for him. The one, the only, the magnificent Laslo the Bard now have an image of his own! ;D
He, Dora Il Khan and Norman are now included in my collection sheet on page 13.
Syntia, my only complaint is that the jacket color matches the background to closely color and texture wise. It therefore becomes lost. Great pic though.
@Delvarian That was actually done on purpose. While Laslo loves to shine and stand out (hence the neckerchief and the waistcoat) he also knows that discretion can be a better part of valor, especially if you like to spend your evenings playing for the half-drunk audience, while your party of skilled thieves utilizes the distraction to its fullest. He therefore likes to match the color of his overcoat to the color of environment, which makes it easy to fade into the background in case if someone notices their purse is missing.
The two protagonists of our multiplayer setup. Hope is a Paladin of Oghma (if those don't exist they do now) and the Bhaalspawn. She's huge, beefy and incredibly well mannered. She had a close relationship with Gorion despite (or perhaps because of) her lack of magical aptitude. She tends to be the diplomat in any given situation.
Myrthe, the half-elf (fighter/thief), is Gorion's biological daughter had with a friend of the Harpers over some unfortunate brief relationship and has lived alone in the keep with him ever since her mother fled the scene. She was by and large responsible for the day to day raising of the young Hope despite calling Hope her 'sister' and is hugely protective of her. She has (had) a very strained relationship with her father quite often and ultimately rejected the magical arts despite her capacity and tutor.
I made these two portraits out of a number of different images. Myrthe is part Gemma Arterton amongst other things and Hope is mostly a Nykolai Aleksander painting.
I took that Mini Arden source pic and made my own little concoction.
OMG fascinating! One of the best BG style fan-pic.
I wonder why do the programers added some strange oil paintings from IWD instead of using some artportraits from fans. Like this one and some others in this top.
If you're playing female fighters or paladins you can't go far wrong with some of the artwork & film stills on the Women Fighters In Reasonable Armour tumblr site. A complete treasure trove of sensible scale and plausible plate.
Hair gel and conditioner must be freely available across the realms.
Heh, I sometimes give that some thought but at least for mages/sorcerers I have a way to roleplay that out. I take kind of a "The Witcher" stance on looks there.
Its to assume that most if not every magic user fairly early on learns how to alter thier appearance magically. Either by illusion, some form of mild shapeshifting, charm spells or more. They are able to control things like thier looks and they can halt or slow the signs of aging. Maybe, hiding scars or flaws also.
On a somewhat related side note. If forgotten realms was real, Charm person would be the date rape spell.
@Syntia13: I took the liberty to abuse the 4-in-1-build-yourself-a-hero (page 3) for my own purpose :P (and removed the weired color-thingie in the armor)
I was searching all throughout the thread and other related threads in the forum and couldn't said "4-in-1-build-yourself-a-hero" as a link or URL. Where is this "4-in-1-build-yourself-a-hero" that you referred to?
So I have an idea. Why don't Trent Oster and others make a contest for BG fans for the best BG NPC portrait? We will vote for the best 3 or 5 pics. And then they will be added to the game as default portraits instead of this ugly oil paintings from IWD. Like old times, many game devolopers added fan forum names as NPCs in the game for some community achievements. Like Brian Fargo does. The winners would be happy to see their work in they favourite game.
@ElizabethSterling Seriously, you painted that yourself? Wow, you're really good at what you do. Any chance you'll make a male character any time soon?
@DMC He meant this picture: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/115595/#Comment_115595 Funnily enough, he seems to be the first person who used this template as intended, i.e. mixed the picture himself. Others just used it as a base for making requests. BTW, @Valky, good job, use the pic to your heart's content. That's what it's for. @DarkDogg I don't like the style of new portraits either, but I wouldn't call them ugly. Just... not to my taste (which is horribly frustrating considering that I find the designs excellent. Just not the style). As for adding fan-made portraits to the game, well, you can already do that, and you can add much wider selection than 3-5 pics, all of them hand-picked by yourself according to your own taste. *glances at her own overflowing 'Portraits' folder*. Yeah. *Shoves the folder out of sight* Hee, the last time BG included a fan cameo, it was Lanfear. I'm not sure she was too happy about it. ;D But art contests are always good. I'd support this idea.
@reedmilfan, thanks for the portrait pack! I've downloaded and will be using it. I especially like your Jaheira. Viconia looks nice too.
@Syntia13, I also like your portrait pack, and I want it, but I can't figure out how to download it. The link just takes me to an empty forum profile page.
P.S. - I think that your Laslo could play Garrick, or Eldoth, if people wanted to use him for an npc. I'd want to use him.
EDIT: Okay, I found some info in another thread about how to use the dropbox. Thanks.

Just realised that Imageshack now converts all .bmp's to .png's so yeah, the pic needs converting before use.
or just head over to http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/8413/bgee-custom-portraits-dropbox-lets-compile-them-all-here-1000-sets-now-with-soundsets-section/p1 and get all the finished images

But yeah, magic is the easy solution to hair problems. Prestidigitation, and presto!
