Well, when he hits level 8 he can put it up to 20 (which is the max)

I actually went through and made every BG1 NPC in 5e a couple years ago. I can post what I did here if people are interested. I'll include a couple of them here. I did take some liberties with some of the characters, like I made Minsc a Barbarian and Tiax a warlock just so I could have someone for each of those classes.

Sarevok should have higher Dex and Int.

Best I could do with point buy. Dex is irrelevant for plate wearers in 5e.

There's also the 5e character generator on Pathguy.
