Version 1 of the Tweaks Anthology Now Available

CamDawgCamDawg Member, Developer Posts: 3,438

The Tweaks Anthology is a WeiDU compilation of fixes, cosmetic changes, and tweaks that will run on every Infinity Engine game, from the original Planescape:Torment, through the Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate series, and the new Enhanced Editions of the games. The successor to BG2 Tweaks and several other tweak packs, some of these were fan requests, others are needed fixes, and others simply make dealing with the more irritating aspects of the game engine easier. Each component can be installed separately so the player can pick and choose only which ones they wish to install. Version 1 tops off a year of beta testing.

I have to disagree with the fact that xan is a "weaker" character because he cant use evocation spells, infact, he is probably one of the strongest mages in bg1, first of all, encantment/charm spells, are actually incredibly powerful ( at least in unmodded games, I don't know what mods do to them in modded games ) and the fact that xan makes his enemies save with a -2 penalty on top of the penalty they might rececive is just icing on the cake

and then it says he doesn't get to cast good damaging spells? except for things like melf's acid arrow, flame arrow, and skull trap, in reality the only "good" damaging spells he is missing are; magic missile, lightning bolt and fireball, and even that is no biggy since there are wands of lightning bolt and fireball, so in reality the only thing he really misses out on is a 5 dart magic missile

ironically in my opinion, the weakest mage in bg1 would be dynaheir because she cant learn enchantment/charm spells, dire charm/ emotion hopelessness and hold monster are absolute enemy devastators and best of all, they don't harm your party members, unlike lightning bolts, fireballs, ice storms, cloud kills, you have to use some micro management to protect your party members from getting fried, but with xan, no sweat

but that's my opinion I suppose, I remember back when I was a younger lad and I though xan was garbage because he was a crap weasel enchanter and couldn't learn the AMAZING evocation spells, but after when I started testing out confusion, chaos, emotion hopelessness, hold monster, dire charm, domination I found out that enchantment spells are actually incredibly good with no damage to team mates, infact, every time you reload your game while in a battle, what is often the cause? I bet easily more than 50% of the time its because an enchantment/charm spell was cast on your party and now your team mates are slicing each other up, so just goes to show how awesome enchantment/charms spells really are

Awesome to see this mod get a full release. I second sarevok57's comment. Enchantment is the best mage specialty.

Yes, In BG, SOD and early BG2, but as the enemies level up and golems and undead increasingly make up the enemies, the usefulness of enchantment drops. Notice how there are no enchantment spells over 5th level.

EDIT: but that is neither here not there. I read @ThacoBell 's comment as a comment on the usefulness of enchanters generally, but you probably meant it in the context of Xan and BG1 specifically. Move along, nothing to see here.

i just want to say that i disagree with this criticism and that i think it's an excellent tweak, especially bc it introduces a generalist mage where there was none

im not not really disagreeing about it being a bad tweak, im disagreeing about the fact that xan is a "weaker" spell caster because his school specialization is enchantment

Enchanters have so many good spells that it doesn't really hurt to not have anything at a higher level. Besides, they can still use any non-evocation spell, so they really aren't hurting for options. The save penalties for enchantment still makes their spells effective in ToB.

Funny, I'm 100% with you on Enchanters and 100% against you on Invokers. I think both Enchantment *and* Evocation are the two strongest specialty schools, despite the fact that they're opposed to each other and they lose each others' spells.

The thing is, there's very little in Enchantment or Invocation that doesn't have a solid replacement. Fireball? Wands and Skull Trap. Magic Missile? Wands of Frost (BG1 version; the BG2 version sucks). Sleep? Wands. Charm? Algernon's Cloak.

Enchanters and Invokers are so great because of what they get a bonus to. You mentioned Xan is a dynamo at spamming Hold, Charm, Emotion, Domination, Chaos, and Feeblemind. Dynahier, on the other hand, is all about Webs, Minor Sequencered Webs, Spider Spawn to wander around her Webs, Melf's Minute Meteors to chuck into Webs, Cloudkills to drop on top of her Webs, etc.

Web is arguably the single best debuffer in BG2-- save every round at -2 or get totally shut down, and that's assuming the caster hasn't stacked two or more in place. It's easy to make party friendly with Spider's Bane, two Rings of Free Action, and the divine Free Action spell. Dynahier's further -2 penalty to Web is every bit as amazing as Xan's -2 penalty to Chaos or Emotion. (And the -2 to Fireball doesn't hurt, either.)

But we're getting kind of far afield. I rather like the "make Xan a generalist" component, even if I'd never use it myself, because I do think there should be a generalist mage somewhere and Xan seems to be the mage who gets the least use.

Regarding the Recoverable ammunition and Recoverable throwing weapons tweaks: will this include mod added ammo and thrown weapons?

If we're counting potential dual-classes, Safana would qualify, too. But I'm just talking bog-standard, as-given NPCs.

(In the original BG1 you could dual-class into a specialist, so most of my Imoens have actually been Conjurers.)

Of course I do wish I hadn't just installed SCS the other day.... :)

Hey quick question - has anyone done a trilogy run with the high level made saving throw bonus option enabled? I thought using this feature with a solo mate run could be fun (as a way to improve high level play) but wanted to know if it severely unbalanced the game.

I haven't played it, but yeah, that would almost certainly unbalance the game a good deal. By halfway through SoA, enemies would have to save against Blindness at -6, against Spook at -12, against Web at -7, against Slow at -9, against Chaos at -8, against Feeblemind at -6, etc. Even end-game ToB enemies are going to be failing those saves more often than not, which means open season on anything that's not outright immune to the effects.

do you still need big world fix pack with this version? I normally run SCS with Anthology Tweaks and when I try to patch both with BWFP it will say that it is expecting Beta 5 (obviously not updated yet).

I can patch it anyway and it "seems" to work just fine. Anybody knows if this is something I shouldn't be doing?
  • CamDawgCamDawg Member, Developer Posts: 3,438
I've no idea, unfortunately. BWP didn't leave any notes as to what needed addressing--I probably fixed it anyway when I combed forums for bug reports, but I can't guarantee it.

    Thank you.

Just to confirm something real quick. I'm supposed to install this mod first and then SCS correct? It's really the only two mods I use (ignoring UI ones) and I noticed some of the SCS stuff doesn't properly work (mostly the ones related to companions) so I wanted to make sure it was not my fault.

I just tried to install Tweaks Anthology v1 into my copy of PsT:EE, but I had to stop, because I kept getting asked if I wanted to install mods that the current readme says are incompatible with Planescape. To be fair, the installer did identify some of the incompatible mods and skipped them as it should. But when it kept asking me if I wanted to install mods it should have skipped, like Remove Helmet Animations, Avatar Morphing, BG Casting Graphics, and IwD Casting Graphics, I quit the installer and re-ran it just long enough to uninstall the few mods I had installed with it. I figured if the installer was behaving this way, then it might not be fully compatible with Planescape Enhanced yet.
Can someone fix the Tweaks Anthology to correctly skip all the mods PsT:EE isn't compatible with? If that isn't possible at this time, could someone at least assure me of whether or not the installer is in fact working properly, so I can at least still install the Anthology by skipping all the incompatible mods manually during installation?

I get errors on the option 'loosening weapon restrictions on multiclass clerics' install. I remember this working on the last version (unless it is a mod conflict).

    [./override/clasweap.2da] loaded, 8509 bytes
ERROR: Cannot find 4 rows with at least 10 columns.ERROR: [clasweap.2da] -> [override] Patching Failed (COPY) (Failure("Cannot Read 2DA Entry"))
    Stopping installation because of error.

Can you attach your clasweap.2da file? By default it should have nine columns, so it's getting an extra one somewhere.
  • CamDawgCamDawg Member, Developer Posts: 3,438
Oh, and if you can hold off a few days, v2 is just about ready pending some last tests--and this, if it's a bug I need to fix.

Where would it be other than the 2da folder? I don't see it in there.

    Override folder.
