Questions about magic resistance

histamiinihistamiini Member Posts: 1,425
I've couple of questions about MR, as I can get Viconia over 100 quite easily, up to 140.

1. Does over 100 MR heal you with offensive spells similar to over 100 FR?
2. Are saving throws useless with 100 MR?
3. Are elemental resistances useless with 100 MR?
4. Does elemental damage heal you over 100 MR?
5. Can item based MR be dispelled?
6. Is Viconia a God with 140 MR?

    1. Never checked, doubt it.
    2. No, you can still get diseased, poisoned etc
    3. No, Fire giants, fire arrows etc still hurt
    4. No
    5. No
    6. You should worship Viconia as a deity despite her mortality either way, surface scum.
But seriously, Viconia is great but pales in comparison to Aerie with Robe of Veccna, regardless for 100+mr.

Thanks for clearing these up. Might as well keep Viconia 100 MR and try to get Keldorn also to 100.

Aerie is squishy, and puny. I always use Viconia as a tank as I can get her 100 MR and low AC.

Aerie is weak, Viconia eats her for breakfast.

1 No , MR is just the chance to negate a spell directly aimed at you. no healing.
2 No , there are plenty of Area effects.
3 No , Elemental weapons and area effects like Fire-Arrrows and fire ball blast radius still hit you.
    4 No
    5 No
6 No , she is just 40MR overgeared.

if you aim for resistances a Cavalier would be best, 100 MR is very possible and high elemental resistances too but that just on a side note.

Thanks, I also read that elemental resistances cap at 127.

I actually put my current playtrough on hold, and started solo cavalier playtrough today, wish me luck as this is the first solo I've done. I'm currently at CH4 pwning everybody. Only mages put of a fight (on SCS), but I just wait their spells to expire and dispose them.

another one to silly easy raise all resistances up to 100 is a Shapeshifter druid. (in BG2)

Greater Werewolf gets 50 to all elemental resistances and 40 MR, druid itself gets another 30% elemental resistance ontop of that , all you need is dragon helmet to be over 100% to all elements , add ring of gaxx/mr necklace and baldurans cloak and hitting that 100MR is even more easy, you may have problems to hit the big bosses with your claws but you can soak all spells for your party and let them do dmg...or just chug energy blades..

Does item MR apply when you're in Werewolf form?

I did some calculations and with Viconia, Rasaad and Keldorn (or any thief and bard) you can get 4 party members to 100 MR including charname, being a thief, bard, monk or wizard slayer. With mage2/dualed you can get to 80 and with paladin to 60 MR.

    100 Viconia (65)
    20 Human Flesh +5 (SoA)
5 Shield Of The Lost (SoA)
    5 Amulet Of Power (SoA)
5 Holy Symbol Of Talos (SoA)

    100 Keldorn

    25 Cloak Of Balduran (BG)
    10 Amulet Of Seldarine (SoA)

    100 Rasaad (83 lv28)

And while I'm at it you can get 5 party members to 100 MR with Viconia, Rasaad, Keldorn, thief or bard, and Charname monk or wizard slayer. If UAI allows the use of npc restricted items that is.

Most of this has been addressed, but I did want to add one point about magic resistance and damage.

Magic resistance is your chance to simply shrug off a spell entirely, though it should be noted that some spells ignore magic resistance (Dragon's Breath, for example). Second, magic resistance actually has nothing to do with reducing magic damage (think Magic Missile, Horrid Wilting, Bolt of Glory, etc.). There is a separate resistance for magic damage, like fire or cold resistance, that reduces magic-type damage taken. Few items and spells actually provide magic damage resistance.

100% MR always cancels Magic Missile.
100% Magic Damage Resist ignores the damage from Magic Missile.
110% Magic Damage Resist heals from Magic Missile.

    to get back on track

1 No , MR is just the chance to negate a spell directly aimed at you. no healing.
2 No , there are plenty of Area effects.

Just to clarify that MR protects you against all enemy spells that don't specifically ignore magic resistance - whether the spell is aimed at you or not. There are spell protections that only apply against targeted spells, but MR is not like that. However, saving throws are still relevant in many situations, e.g. against:
    - spells that ignore MR
    - physical attacks with spell-like consequences (like basilisk gaze or monk stun)
    - psionics
    - poison and disease

In relation to the difference between magic resistance and magic damage resistance:
    - magic resistance protects you against all forms of magic irrespective of the damage type, i.e. 100% magic resistance would stop a magic missile (magic damage), fireball (fire damage) or lightning bolt (electrical damage).
    - magic damage resistance protects you only against magic damage, i.e. it would help against a magic missile or ADHW, but not a fireball. The % resistance reduces damage, i.e. 50% resistance would reduce damage by half. Like elemental resistances it is technically possible to have magic damage resistance of over 100 which would result in magic damage actually healing you. However, you would need to use modded items to achieve that.

another one to silly easy raise all resistances up to 100 is a Shapeshifter druid.

Does item MR apply when you're in Werewolf form?
yes it does. but only Greater Werewolf , normal Werewolf is Locked at 20MR
actually did a test what works on werewolf's and what not.

You can increase MR with items for a normal werewolf - you just need to equip them after you change form. It's the same sort of mechanic as when using Carsomyr - when you equip the sword / change form it sets MR, but equipping/re-equipping items after that will boost it.

Wow, that's nice. Does transormation have a duration? So there actually could be possibility to get party of 6 to 100 MR including Charname. Have to calculate some more.

I'm currently on solo Cavalier playthrough and was thinking using Carsomyr to get 100 MR, but I can actually get there with Purifier as well. I wonder which would be more devastating Carsomyr, or Purifier dualed with something else? Of course I can do Carsomyr first and switch later in game.

    100 Cavalier
    5 Enkidu's Full Plate (ToB)
    25 Cloak Of Balduran (BG)
    30 Purifier +5 (ToB, 20 SoA)
    + 2nd Weapon
    10 Amulet Of Seldarine (SoA)
    10 Ring Of Gaxx (SoA)
    7 Star-Strewn Boots (15 wizard slayers) (SoD)
5 Machine Of Lum The Mad (SoA)

Cernd can get 100 MR, but there just isn't enough stuff for party of 6, without NPC unrestricted UAI.

    100 Cernd (40 Greater Werewolf lv13)
    25 Cloak Of Balduran (BG)
10 Kaligun's Amulet Of Magic Resistance (SoA)
    10 Ring Of Gaxx (SoA)
    7 Star-Strewn Boots (15 wizard slayers) (SoD)
5 Machine Of Lum The Mad (SoA)
    +
5 Shield Of Fyrus Khal +2 (for all inside 10ft) (SoA EE)

UAI does not allow you to use NPC special equipment, unfortunately, although i understand it did at various patch versions in the past (perhaps this was pre-EE, not sure).

Also need to be a bit careful when making Shapeshifter claims because the unmodded kit has some weird behavior/bugs and obviously using a modded version will be different. The tweaks anthology versions correctly stack their MR with items but the original kit versions applied a fixed MR and did not, but again that may well depend on patch version and could be working properly now. I can't really say as i have not played w/o the mods in ages.

Also worth noting that some of the SoD items do not import into SoA such as the Star-Strewn Boots, sorry.

Cloak of Balduran is also not available w/o using the Console.

That's true, although most that care such things use EET I think, which allows importing all the items.

Werewolf stays on 20 MR FIXED. no change even equipping things after (in this case cloak of balduran)

I am using the standard BGEE and BG2EE Steam edition , latest patch , no Mods. all my "Claims" are just observations and tests of what works and what not, older patches and modded games may have other results.

with SoD the way items transfer from BG1 to BG2 is different now, too lazy to find the actual workings but as much as i know if you have the certain items one of them will pop up in BG2 like Helm of Balduran, if you instead have another specific item it may pop up in its place instead etc. but don't nail me on that one.

Transformation Werewolf and Greater Werewolf lasts until Canceled..(you only have to do that if you wanna cast spells) you start with 1 Transformation normal werewolf a day at lvl 1 and end that at 7 transformations/day at lvl 12 then you start getting greater werewolfs a day instead ...1 at 13 ...7 at max level.

Werewolf stays on 20 MR FIXED. no change even equipping things after (in this case cloak of balduran)

@DevardKrown I agree that's the position in BG1 where I assume you've done your testing. However, the OP is clearly concerned with using the BG2 engine in order to be able to access all items from BG1, SoD and BG2 through the EET mod. In the latest current BG2 engine MR for a shapeshifter behaves as I described earlier, i.e. equipping items after the transformation will boost MR.

I had a prob once where I had 100+ MR and a paltry lil Chormatic orb did me in. That was until I learned the death effect bypassed MR. Now using SReveisions I don't have that worry as they removed that from the spell. Took a while to figure that out.
