From the quotes I've been posting, I'm obviously an Atheist, but this is one of my favorite bible quotes.
“What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun” -- Ecc. 1:9
I love the quote, since a lot of things we consider new, have been around much longer than most people think. Atomic theory and some of the early ideas of quantum physics can be traced back to Democritus and Epicurus. The Greeks could have had steam engines, and ancient Chinese Pioneered replaceable parts. Hell, the cotton gin had been around forever in China, long before Eli Whitney "invented" it. The Minoans had hot/cold indoor plubming. Henry Ford gets credit for the assembly line, but the gun industry had been doing it for a long time before him, and we copied a lot of that from the British/Germans/French. It's important to remember people of the past were smart too.
There's also the part about what has been will be. The old adage of "Those who do not know history are destined to repeat it" is absolutely true. I draw a lot of parallels between cryptocurrencies and dutch tulip bust. The whole bubble economy thing has played itself out plenty of times in just my lifetime. Reaganomics, the dot-com bubble, the real-eastate bubble, crypto currencies. I worry that we're in another tech bubble right now, too.
"If I have seen further it is by standing on ye sholders of Giants." -- Isaac Newton
That quote fits with above one, since Newton (possibly the smartest mofo to ever live) realized his achievements were only possible because of what had become before.
The graffiti in Pompeii is one of my favorite ways to remind myself that people of the past were, well, people too. Raunchy people.
The Eurymedon Vase https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurymedon_vase is similar. Even the wikipedia article I linked to doesn't show a picture. If you really want to see it, do a google images search for it, it's kind of hilarious, just be warned it's NSFW. It's a dirty Vase from the Greek and Persian wars.
Roland The Farter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_the_Farter is another example. Henry II of England gave that man an estate and all Roland had to do was perform one jump, one whistle, and one fart, at the King's court on Christmas.
By the way, though we are mainly talking about quotes from real-life personalities, here are three of my (and perhaps, most of ours') most favourite quotes from within the Game. These are classic!
1. "Butt-kicking for goodness!" - Minsc
2. "Life is strength." - Joneleth Irenicus
3. "Wisdom is only possessed by the learned." - Obe / Priest of Oghma
