Click play and nothing

I pre-loaded a couple days ago via the standalone launcher. Today I successfully downloaded the 100mb update and the loading bar turned into a big friendly "Play" button.

I click said button, the launcher closes, and nothing happens. I tried "run as administrator" and that didn't help.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? The few threads I found simply suggested running as an administrator from the program folder, but that didn't work for me.

Was having the same problem and figured it out.
    Right click the play button
    Click open game location
    Open the numerical folder
    Click baldur
Say hello to Boo for me

    Hope this helps

    aaw it still didn't work.

I get two seconds of the windows 7 loading ring and then it conks out. I'm wondering if I just have a corrupted install.

Thanks a ton for trying to help me out though!

I was having the same problem but I just got it to run by setting the program compatibility mode to Windows Vista service pack 1. You have to right click on the blue arrow, open game location, open a folder named '00766' and then made my changes on the Baldur.exe file. Running the baldur.exe allowed my game to start.

update - argh! now it stopped working.

update 2 - selecting 'run as administrator' allowed my game to work.

Hey guys, this is a shot in the dark - for anyone this is happening to, can you try installing OpenAL for me? http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip Do that, and let me know if it's still not working for you.

I got mine to work by running the baulder.exe file using Windows Vista (Service Pack 1) compatibility mode.
  • CohoshCohosh Member Posts: 18
I tried moving the file from Programs(x86) to (C:), and tried setting compatibility to Vista Service pack 1.

After doing this and running baldur.exe as an administrator (the one in 00766), I have successfully launched a black screen with music that changed my mouse into a familiar gloved hand. This is perhaps some semblance of progress.

Time to try Nathan's advice i suppose. I'll be back here in a minute to report.

Thanks again to everybody with input!

update: Now its a black screen with a big white box in the middle.

Nope, tried Nathan's suggestion and nothing, just a crash. Ran as administrator from the actual Baldur file in 0076, still a crash.

Yep same thing here, cant run though Beamdog or the .exe file, even after installing Open AL.

    same exact thing. Disappointing.

What I was able to do is set both launcher and baldur.exe as run as administrator and vista service pack 1 compatibility. Then you have to launch the launcher and try pressing play. If it don't work, then launch baldur.exe manually and it comes up consistently for me. You have to run the launcher again if you exit.

I also changed my NVidia control panel to only use one GPU if that makes a difference for baldur.exe

ok i got mine to work, I have win 7 64bit nvidia card, but it kept crashing. I did find a soultion but i had to use the balduer.exe file in the beamdog/data/00766 folder and launch from there. i used compatability setting xp sp2 and run as admin and also i checked disable display scaling on high dpi settings and it worked like a charm hope this helps
  • RRTSReaperRRTSReaper Member Posts: 16
Changing compatability is only relevant if you are using Vista or 7. While that may be helpful for you, it does not help those who are running on XP.

I'm on Win7 64 and no compat setings work. The bgee laucher and baldur.exe seem to still be in the task manager. I end task and then try again. Nothing.

Launcher disappears and bgee is still in task manager.

Really? no offense, but *golf clap*

tried all compat settings. Moved the folder. Nothing working. This is really annoying.

I downloaded the creative OpenAL program Nathan recommended. Some combination of that, plus the several other steps taken, have gotten it working for me.

When I first start up the game I still get a black screen! I Alt-tabbed, and then opened it back up and BAM i get a game menu. Also the fancy new cutscene was choppy as balls, but I can get over that. I'm still in char creation and so don't know yet if /gameplay/ will be equally choppy, but I'll post here regardless. I'm wondering if i'm having the intel OpenGL problems described in the announcement. We shall see! for now I'm gonna spend a while rolling digital dice on my illusionist/thief.

I seem to be the first to say it... I am so glad they took an extra 2 months to fix things for a smooth rollout.

Running on Win 7 64 with Nvidia GTX 680 and had the same issue. Hit play, nothing happens. I set the launcher to run as admin and in compatibility mode for Vista Service Pack 1 and that fixed it.

Go into the 00766 folder. right click the exe. Click properties > compatibility. Then check the "Disable display scaling on high DPI". Hit ok. Double click the exe

Wow ok so the two EXE programs are really bugged. I have to click start the desktop icon and hit play. If it just closes i hit it again and leave it up. I then go to the 00766 folder go to properties in the exe them compatibility tab. Click run as admin and run in xp ser pack 2 mode. close that window. Then double click the the exe in the 00766 folder. This works... If it stops working you have to disable run as admin then re enable it... weird.

Oh my..this actually WORKED for me.

Do this for BGEE.EXE, and ONLY that file, don't touch Baldur.exe. This specifc combination is the only thing that will launch mine every time.

Even with UAC OFF, run as administrator MUST be selected for it to work, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt to turn off your UAC as well..as far for making it compatible :)
