Trilogy run and when to dual

Heya!
I've recently gotten back into the BG series and to be honest, I don't really understand why I stopped, as meeting NPCs is like meeting an old friend.
Played through the game up until SOD as a dwarf bounty hunter and half-orc thief / cleric and I kind of understood that I don't like these characters and want that something new to try.
So the conclusion is dual classing. Never done it before and it could be fun from RP perspective. Yet I've no idea when exactly to do it. Right now I'm stuck with fighter -> mage (Gorions ward) or fighter ->thief (Bhaals progeny). The most common dual point seems to be 7 / 9 / 13. 13 for extra APR but my concern is that with 13, I'll spend most SOA as a single class something and relying on the party too much and only will start enjoying myself in TOB. I'm not much of a powergamer and flawed characters are found to be more fun, yet being useless is albeit too much of a flawed.
So could someone kindly advise on the best breaking point in order to become demigod I'm supposed to yet not spend too much time in the background while Minsc smashes everyone's head?

Clerics (450k XP for lvl 10) will take some time in SOA.
13 does sound too much of a setback. Thank you! I'll dual at 9. All I need right now is to actually decide between mage and thief.
I wasn't sure how to count XP cap properly when planing when my charname gets abilities back, so thank you! You've made it quite easy
