Help please: Companions get unlimited XP and cannot die

AmelianAmelian Member Posts: 19
I've just got the BG2:EE and added some mods for a new runthrough, but I've found quite an annoying bug now.

Every companion starts at Lvl 0 (I don't remember which mod does that, but it was intentional). Jaheira and Imoen and my Main Char work just fine. However, Minsc (and since then Yoshimo, Aerie, Kivan and Dace) get unlimited XP. I can level them straight up to the maximum. To stop that, I have to manually edit their XPs via EEKeeper - and I have to do that every time they level up, as the bug comes back, which is kind of annoying.

Additionally I've just found out, that those companions cannot die. My Main Char and Jaheira can, everyone else just stays at 1HP and fights on.

Did anyone experience someting similar and can help me?

Do you use SCS? IIRC, there's a bug with one of its npc leveling components that causes the problem you're having with exp.

As for the immortal thing, are you playing on story mode?

Yeah, I use SCS, but didn't know that there's a bug with the NPC customization. Yet I don't play on Story Mode, IIRC it's Tactical Mode.

Yet how do I solve the problem? Is it alright to just uninstall SCS and Tweaks Anthology (being the last two mods of my installation) and reinstall them without the customization option? Or do I have to do a complete reinstall of the whole game? And in which way will this affect my savegames? Can I still use them or are they gone for good then, because I changed sth with the mods?

I would go seeking more informative answers on SCS's forums (if SCS is indeed the culprit - I've never heard of SCS causing immortal Party members before, generally it's known for KILLING party members in a variety of fun and interesting ways)

Thanks for the link and the tip. I searched the Gibberlings 3 forum and apparently it is a bug with SCS, especially if you install Level One NPCs aswell (which I haven't). A workaround should be turning the AI on, but that yielded no result with my savegames. I've asked in the other forum how to solve it, hopefully it can be done without having to restart.

Edit: I still don't know however how savegames respond to uninstalling and reinstalling mods without some of their components. Do they still work or do I have to restart, no matter how much I change the installed mod?

Edit 2: Okay, I found out that the AI needs to be toggled on when you level an NPC up for the first time, so when he starts at Level 0 due to the SCS component. If that's the case, the NPC will level normally. If not, it doesn't matter if you turn the AI on later on, he will level to the max and cannot die. Looks like I have to start over again. :/

Hmm, I didn't know about the AI setting, so I reinstalled SCS without that component. I might have to try that trick on my next run, as I would really prefer that option.

@Amelian Its typically not a good idea to change mod installs mid game. At a bare minimum, it will borked some or all of the dialogs and text. CHanging up mods means starting a new game.

Generally it's a good rule of thumb not to change mods with an ongoing game unless you know what you're doing. I would say that's especially true with a complex mod like SCS being involved... unless 1. you have a very simple install with SCS and only a couple other mods 2. you're only uninstalling minor components like this particular one that's buggy.

If you list your weidu log here it might give us a better idea of what you're dealing with.

    @ThacoBell & @ithildurnew
Thanks, I guessed that it might be a bad idea to change mods mid game. I wanted to add my WeiDu log to the first post, but somehow the forum didn't let me post that.

I've a hell lot of mods installed, several NPCs, Tweaks, RR, S&S, SCS, Ascension, UB, so changing it mid game would probably result in a crash. I've worked around by going back to one of my former save games and replaying from there (Chateau Irenicus Level 2) till the Copper Coronet. This way only Minsc is broken and I don't plan to take him along anyway. Every other companion works now he/she should.

Btw., the bug occurs aswell when you have one broken character leveling up (Minsc in my case) and after doing so that character jumping to the next level up and another character joining your party and starting from level 0. In that case, the new char will also get buggy. If I solve Minsc's problem with EEKeeper first, the new chars are fine as long as AI is turned on.

Yet how do I solve the problem? Is it alright to just uninstall SCS and Tweaks Anthology and reinstall them without the customization option? Or do I have to do a complete reinstall of the whole game? And in which way will this affect my savegames? Can I still use them or are they gone for good then, because I changed sth with the mods?

Use CTRL-R to remove their immortality and use the console to reset their XP to the same value as the protagonst once they hit the right level. For instance, if Edwin is getting infinite XP while your main character has enough XP for a single classed mage to be level 12, then level up Edwin to 12 and then use the console to set his XP to that same value. He shouldn't gain any more after that.

Thanks for the idea with using CTRL-R. I however have done a complete re-install in the meantime with far less mods and it's working fine now. Sorry, I forgot to write here that I've done that.
