New Infinity Engine 2.7 beta release

JuliusBorisovJuliusBorisov Member, Administrator, Moderator, Developer Posts: 22,890
Hello to Baldur’s Gate and Infinity Engine fans around the world!

We’re excited to announce a new beta test for our upcoming 2.7 patch for BG:EE, SoD, BGII:EE, and IWD:EE. We’ll begin testing on PC, Steam only, as it’s the most technically convenient for us, and later bring the update to mobile as well.

We know it’s been a long wait since 2.6 (and for iOS players, since 2.5). We’re truly sorry it took this long. With 2026 marking 14 years since BG:EE first launched on PC, we want to thank you for staying with us on this journey.

Before diving into the patch notes, we’d like to share our design philosophy for future Infinity Engine updates at this stage of the games’ life cycle.

Our goal is to keep these classics running smoothly amid evolving technical requirements and operating systems on both PC and mobile. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to update the console versions: those would require extensive certification processes we can’t currently support. We also want to update PST:EE on PC and mobile in the future, but because it’s on a different patch level from BG and IWD, it might follow later.

We’re focused on improving the overall quality-of-life experience. That’s why the 2.7 update introduces proper cloud saving and native support for Apple Silicon Macs.

We’re also finally able to bring community-created localizations into the games. We know this took far too long, and we appreciate your patience. The good news is that adding new translations will now be much easier on our end, so future community-prepared localizations can be integrated more smoothly.

Everyone at Beamdog is, first and foremost, a fan of these legendary games. It’s an honor to continue supporting them nearly 15 years after the Enhanced Editions, and more than 25 years after the original Baldur’s Gate.

IE 2.7.0.0 Patch Notes
  • Dynamic language support. We have made changes to the BG1:EE, BG2:EE, and IWD:EE games to allow easier language updates and additions in the future. These updates should not require a patch on most store fronts and we should be able to update most games on an ad hoc basis. This release will also include the latest updates from the Beamdog Translate site for these games.
  • [Steam] Steam Cloud saves can now be controlled via the Steam client. Previously, the only way to enable or disable Steam Cloud Saves for BG1:EE, BG2:EE, and IWD:EE was within the Gameplay Options of the games. Now, Steam Cloud Saves are controlled by the Steam client and the individual game properties settings.
If you have enabled Steam Cloud Saves with the Gameplay Options setting, Steam Cloud Saves will continue to be enabled for you. Please note that with this in-game option enabled the game will sync your save games with the Steam Cloud Saves even if this option is disabled within the Steam client Cloud Save settings.

If you disable the in-game Steam Cloud Saves option, this option will no longer appear in the options menu. To enable Steam Cloud Saves, you will need to use the Steam Account and Application settings. Steam Account and Application settings for Steam Cloud Saves:

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/68D2-35AB-09A9-7678#enabling
  • [BG2] We have added the following community-translated languages to the game: Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, and Ukrainian.
  • [IWD] We have added the following community-translated languages to the game: Hungarian and Japanese.
  • [macOS] Added Apple Silicon support
With native support for Apple Silicon, users can expect faster app launch times, overall improved performance, and faster rendering. In addition, laptops will benefit from lower power consumption while playing, leading to longer battery life.

Test Objective
  1. Launch the Beta on Steam
  2. Verify the added languages to BG2 and IWD - NOTE the translations themselves are the purview of the community contributions
  3. Verify that the Steam cloud save options work as expected
  4. Verify macOS versions run as expected on Apple Silicon
  5. Provide the following feedback (if appropriate for your device)
- Windows - I am able to play the game and use cloud saves
- MacOS (Intel CPU) - I am able to play the game and use cloud saves
- MacOS (Apple Silicon CPU) - I am able to play the game and use cloud saves
- Linux - I am able to play the game and use cloud saves
- I was able to play the game, but don't use cloud saves (please note platform)
- I was NOT able to get the start screen (please explain)
- I was able to start the game, but there is an issue with cloud saves (please explain)

How to opt-in and verify in-game you're running the correct version:
  • In your Steam Library, Right-Click Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition/Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition/Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition and choose “Properties”
  • Click on the Beta Tab
  • Choose the road_to_2.7 in the drop down menu
  • If you don't see the road_to_2.7 in the drop down menu, please restart Steam
  • In-game, on the main menu, you will see that the build is 2.7

    Great news!
Is there any chance of adding a way to share saves between PC and mobile?(Or will mobile have cloud save support too?)
Previously, I was able to sync my saves by transferring them from mobile to PC, but with recent Android changes I can no longer access the game files directly.
    Thanks!

For this particular phase of this beta-test, we're focusing on PC-only.

We're hoping that during the mobile release of 2.7 to improve the Android and iOS file sharing experience, but it is still under development.

Coming back here for the news.
Thanks for the update ! Cheers to the team that is making this possible.
If you manage to open the folders on iOS to ease modding/save management, life is going to be soooo beautiful.

Great to hear a new update's coming!

Once v2.7 is finalized, would it be possible to host its debug symbols (like was done with v2.6) at https://files.beamdog.com? This would help tremendously with getting EEex / other binary patches up to speed with the new version.

I hope they put the original character sounds in the spanish version.

Sure, why not? We'll look into that.

Real shame about the console versions not ever really getting proper support. Always felt like they were not very supported after release but it is what it is. Great to see that after all this time the other versions are still getting decent support.

To get any new language into the game, we'd need a completed volunteer translation uploaded to the Translation Tool.

    E.g. https://translate.beamdog.com/projects/1 for BG:EE

Not sure about original character sounds in Spanish, will ask about that.

Excellent news on the native Apple Silicon support! I'm genuinely excited about that.

I'm running Apple's app store versions of the games, so will wait until they show up there before testing.

Yes, i dont think we are speaking about a volunteer translation but the original voices. Not sure if exist a legal issue there for beamdog. I have the files from the original CDs i can facilitate.

OK, I decided not to wait and tried the Steam IWD:EE 2.7 beta on my M4 Pro Mac mini (Sequoia 15.7.4, 48 GB) and it's working well so far. Steam cloud saves are also working.

An update about the Spanish VO:

We will try looking into it later in 2026 as there are a few obstacles:

We need to find the original Spanish VO files (most likely in WAV format)
We need to convert those files VO audio from WAV to what we used in the EE versions

For some reason, the files we had got from BioWare initially didn't have Spanish VO, that's why it hasn't been in the game.
  • Before diving into the patch notes, we’d like to share our design philosophy for future Infinity Engine updates at this stage of the games’ life cycle.
Our goal is to keep these classics running smoothly amid evolving technical requirements and operating systems on both PC and mobile.
We’re focused on improving the overall quality-of-life experience.

Do these statements infer the possibility of full native controller support implemented in your games in the future?

Do we have a chance to see this update in the console in the future? We have been waiting for so long.… Сan you open a fundraiser to release the patch on console? I think console community can help you to do this for us;)

This is something we'd like to look into. Not a small undertaking, though.

Our IT/Live-OPs folks will look first.

This is a licence, and the rightsholder doesn't allow fundraisers.

Doing well!!! Got a new job recently and making a lot more money than I was way back when haha, I recently replayed BG1 for the first time since siege of dragonspear came out about two weeks ago and it still holds up so well even compared to more modern crpgs. Taking a small break then gonna tackle SoD for my 2nd playthrough of it and then on to BG2.

I asked, our team would prefer to find the original files from BioWare, this is a matter of chain of custody. I know during livestreams in 2018 we promised we would look, but those people left Beamdog. Sorry for that.

Sounds really good, happy for you. And yes, the game definitely still holds up, even after Baldur's Gate 3, if players can get through the look from 2000.

Unfortunately, that's not the focus of the patch updates, as explained in the OP.

Using the Apple Silicon version on a mac is working well.
I was hoping the bug with the trackpad requiring multiple clicks on a Macbook was fixed with the native version, but it seems not.

Being on a Mac, it's been awhile since I've installed a Steam game (all the games in my library are 32-bit and cant be played anymore hah). Are the save games swappable between the GoG/Beamdog/Steam versions??

I finally worked my way through BG1/SoD and was almost through the Underdark in BG2 when I got my M2 Pro Mini and ditched my Intel mini. Mine are from GoG, but I'm very tempted to buy yet another copy of the games on Steam just so I can finally finish it after all these years!

Seems this is a pattern with this game in particular hahaha. When I got to the last fight with Irenicus back in 2001, my save game was right before going in, all my sequencers and proper spells memorized and ready for war. I switched from PC to Mac because of work, and of course rebought both games for the new platform. My save games transferred and loaded fine, but none of my spells I had memorized did, so I never did get to finish that last fight!!

We're wondering about your setup, do you use a mouse, trackpad, or "Mouse Keys"? And if you can try all the options you have available, does the issue still happen with each?

Sure, the save games should be compatible between these 3.

Ok, I understand there are reasons for that.

I also think i have original CDs from the days when i was kid. Probably in parents home. But i would need to find It them.

Do this files would work for beamdog?

Anyway thanks for all the work after all these years.
