Your hardest battle ever in any BG game?

Mine was Abazigal with Ascension mod. DAMN that fight was hard, but definitely felt EPIC.

Firkraag got me the worst. I think monks get so many cool immunities later (I was one) that the hard late fights were a little adjusted, but I'm not sure. I wasn't a solid player (still am not one), so I didn't optimize magic and party very well.

    been a while since I tackled BG2

but I spent like an hour and a half on Aec'Letec in Ulgoth's Beard last night. You can kill the chick before she even spawns him but I was stubborn and wanted victory on insane.

The first time I played. The Yuan-Ti mage and Tor-Gal in D'Arnise keep were like some kind of perplexing mystery, I was clueless how to go about killing them.

After that, Firkraag. I think I resorted to hiding in a corner and casting stinking cloud at him. The shame!!

edit - whoops! not stinking cloud, the other one, cloudkill.

Though that reminds me. The Ottyugh (sp?) in Irenicus' dungeon, I thought was some kind of mega boss. I think I emptied Imoen and Jaheira's spellbooks at it, so.. stinking cloud, entangle..
I also hadn't grasped the concept of weapon specialisation, so my weak and feeble but highly intelligent and wise elven kensai was wielding a sword that she barely knew how to swing.

Like I said in an earlier thread, the glory days! ignorance is bliss. (sometimes)

Improved irenicus definitely. Having all your hax loot taken away sure made it hard, and all the different immunities.

Oh, you're talking about the Spellhold battle. I was referring to the final one, that consists of 2 stages. I found the Spellhold one a lot easier. And you definitely get your loot back before the fight, however you do have to fight a Lich in Spellhold being naked, i found that particular one harder.

Urgs, that'd be the same like tactics? SCSII now has a down-tuned option based on this, no stealing + no hmm additional summons. Though I dunno if the latter applies only on higher difficult levels.
Just re-installed everything from a scratch and have chosen only the *mimimi*-version with no stealing :)

I only used tactics, but it was sometimes a bit too absurd & sick and stalled that campaign, else my PC or anything within the range of my fist would have been seriously damaged!

    edit: or the spellhold battle?

The last battle with the Gith for the repossession of the Silver Sword. I was fairly low level and there were innocents around that I did not want to kill. Also, with all those spells flinging around, Athkathla Mages Guild also stopped by.

Of course, all the dragon fights were worthy, and anything with the Ascension mod was hard, but then those were expected to be hard. Them Githyanki just teleport in when you haven't prepped properly.

There's a few hard ones, including the bears when you're first level! But I think Ac'lec'tec gets my vote for toughest of the tough. It's the only battle I typically have to run several times to win, no matter how strong my party.

@alexdelarge nope I'm referring to the final fight with him in the abyss, he takes away cloak of cheese, acid katana, Crom fayer, and a bunch of other stuff, that you get back by killing and looting his 5 split aspects. I felt like I'd climbed mt Everest when the Bastard finally went down.

@talky yep I'm talking about tactics, the improved irenicus component.
  • colonel_burgercolonel_burger Member Posts: 279
Improved illych was an absolute Bastard as well. 1 sleep in the whole dungeon, wtf?
  • atcDaveatcDave Member Posts: 2,179
Sorry, I'll say the unpopular thing; tactics mod is such a horrible cheat and requires far to much "gamey" knowledge to even register as legitimate play to me. It's just over-the-top outrageous for its own sake. Not my thing at all.

Battles native to the game interest me far more.

You should try SCS then @atcDave, it improves difficulty by increasing the AI intelligence, but doesn't actually give them extra powers compared to the original. It's a very worthwhile experience overall.

It was much harder for me to kill the demon knight without breaking the mirror then killing Aec'Letec.

I didn't get very much into TotSC or BG:2 (unfortunately) so my hardest fight was, simply, Sarevok and his crew. This time around I plan on hitting up the extra features and when BG2:EE comes out I'm gonna play the heck out of it, even though I don't care for the first dungeon being a necessary component (flavor-wise: cool. Gameplay-wise: give me a break! Cut me loose on the zones like you did in BG1!).

The website that hosts SCS seems to be down. Also, does SCS work with BG:EE?
  • AlexDeLargeAlexDeLarge Member Posts: 273
No, it does not work yet. They are working hard to implement it though. Just wait it out a couple more weeks.

    Obvious spoilers about ToB below!!!

Ascension battle, Irenicus-Bodhi re-match. It came way more difficult than the actual Ascension Battle. 2 damn fallen solars who cast Creeping Doom on my party instantly, and Bodhi releases her swarm of bats too.

And my party is hasted so they take DOUBLE damage from 3xcreeping dooms. No spellcasting. Then Bodhi uses her special darkness ability which blinds people. No spellcasting or ranged weapon usage.

By this time, Jon finishes his time stop, and goes on improved alacrity-spell sequencer fest, breaching and killing your party. Bodhi is super fast and goes for a target not-protected from level drain and drains 5 levels per hit, with 4 attacks/round, and she never misses. Oh and two fallen solars use their accursed VORPAL long bows! Yeah they can one shot kill a character. They totally rape my party while my characters run around, suffering massive damage from creeping doom, unable to do cast a spell, use abilities, ranged weapons due to blindness, stripped of their defenses by Jon, being horribly level drained by Bodhi and getting vorpalled on the face by Solars..Oooh, I forgot:and Imoen in your party goes Slayer, leaves and attacks your party and you have to be extra careful not to kill her by accident. And you can not try to ignore a rampaging frickin' Slayer in the middle of your party, tearing anyone close to shreds in a round or two. What..the..heck!!!

My hardest fight in any BG game was when I first encountered adamantium golems IIRC. At that time, I didn't know that the quality of weapons (and the type) is also considered if a weapon can damage certain enemies. So frustrating really that the only times that I could damage them then was with critical hits.
  • atcDaveatcDave Member Posts: 2,179
Alex thanks for the pointer! I will have to give that a try.

    Firkraag

I always beat him with cheesy methods. Melissan was bad too.
  • IllustairIllustair Member Posts: 877
    @Helias
Melissan was bad in what way? Bad that it wasn't much of a challenge, or bad that it's hard like Firkraag as you mentioned?

Hmm..I thought the last fight with her was a huge let down. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't particularly hard either. But yes, I agree, Firkraag was really really hard by the time you first meet him. I also used the cheesy unli-trap in my first playthrough.
  • HeliasHelias Member Posts: 112
Yes, bad as in difficult. To have to kill her time after time ....

Sarevok, Irenicus, Kangaxx and Aec'Lectec seemed challenging, but easier than Melissan.
  • IllustairIllustair Member Posts: 877
Aha, Kangaxx..I think he's the hardest on my account. The imprisonment spam is just so annoying, and you really have to prepare and do some research for it. But that's really odd...I just can't recall the Melissan as very hard given how powerful you are at that time; maybe it's just been so long since I last played BG, but I think I only had 1 run with Melissan in our first encounter. In contrast to Kangaxx, I have already lost count on how many times I had to reload. But I have to say, it was a very very long fight.

I think i've been victorious against everything in every BG game except one creature.

(minor ToB spoiler about watcher keep). I have never managed to defeat the Demigorgon, the big baboon demon thingy at the bottom of the watcher keep. He was just too big a beef for my party to chew.

    @Jackalen
I was inspired by someone who's doing a no reload game (perhaps I'll make some rule changes like reload on last level up only), and was thinking of doing that. But then, that MONSTER! I remember toning down the difficulty slider for that monster. It was just impossible for me, even at high levels. Even more so for a no-reload game; I guess I'll have to make another exception when I reach that point.:D I take back what I said earlier...it's actually 1. Demigorgon and on a far far far behind number 2 Kangaxx for me.

If anyone has ever played the Vecna mod. It has the most challenging and longest battles I have ever played in any game, not just in BG. You'll really be tempted to have uber items, and even with some uber ones equipped...every fight would still be hours-long challenge.
