I think i've been victorious against everything in every BG game except one creature.
(minor ToB spoiler about watcher keep). I have never managed to defeat the Demigorgon, the big baboon demon thingy at the bottom of the watcher keep. He was just too big a beef for my party to chew.
I haven't fought it in a long time, but from what I remember you can abuse the layout of the room. You have a narrow passage (2 characters wide) and the demon summons melee creatures. If you position so that only 2-3 of them are hitting your tanks, and dont kill them, then the demon cannot get in range to melee you. You still need to counter it's spells and kill it, but it is a lot easier when it cannot melee you.
My Thief trying to murder a Watcher in Candlekeep. Not enough Hide/Move Silently to reliably hide for backstabbing, not nearly enough Set Snares to keep from impaling himself trying to set a trap.
Alright, so I have kind of a list here...I'll put a TL;DR at the end for those who don't enjoy reading my (or other long and possibly boring) posts.
Also, if it wasn't completely obvious by the nature of this thread, SPOILERS SPOILERS
SPOILERS
When I first played the games, I was about 9 years old. Yeah, 9! So my characters in Baldur's Gate 1 died to Silke EVERY SINGLE TIME (even when I used Algernon's on her, I somehow managed to mess that up...) As for Baldur's Gate 2, it was generally the Otyugh that got me.
When I first REALLY played the games, I actually started with BG2, then went back to BG1, then did BG2 again (many many characters, but only 2 or 3 full completions of BG2 for me and only 1 of ToB). In my experience, generally, the hardest fight in BG1/BGTutu was Aec'Letec: My Cavalier (or my Fighter in BG1) never stood a chance! I assumed Cavaliers would rock him, but he always managed to destroy my entire party. In BG2, Dragons were always very very difficult, and Kangaxx was just stupid.
When I most recently played through the games, I have played 1 Tutu, 1 BG2, and I haven't quite completed BG:EE yet but I am near the end in two playthroughs. The tutu game Aec'letec was the hardest, the BG2 game the Illithids were the hardest (the same Cavalier I took through Tutu), and in BG:EE, two words. GREATER WYVERNS . Funny thing, Aec'Letec was fairly when I fought him in BG:EE. A few protection spells and some potions, and I didn't lose a single guy (practically the only person who took damage was Kagain, and he regenerated it by the time I had traveled to the next location). Greater Wyverns, however, were my party's downfall. Dorn and Montaron could not handle the awesome might of the poison of Durlag's tower. WHOOPS I remembered an EVEN WORSE fight. When in the first big level of Durlag's tower, you must fight 4 dwarf-looking monsters that are pretty beefy and have good spells. I was 'under-leveled', and as soon as the fight started I died from a Cloudkill automatically. After reloading, Dorn died automatically, followed by Xzar. This happened about 5 more times before I realized who exactly was casting the cloudkill, and positioned my whole party to take him out first (Pause right away, Command from Xzar and CHARNAME, Poison weapon from Dorn, Backstab from Montaron, Emotion: Hopelessness from Edwin). That fight (the dwarf's name is Avarice) is SO ANNOYING.
Many people say the Iron Throne is a difficult fight, and I can see that. However, once you take out the main man (regardless of who on your team doesn't make it), you win. No big sweat, you can resurrect them later (except for CHARNAME obviously).
As for Irenicus fights (I have never played with any mods that increase difficulty or add quests besides a few NPC mods, so I haven't experienced 'Improved Irenicus' or 'Ascension Abazigal'), I actually found them rather easy. Perhaps this is because I invest in Set Traps with whoever my thief is (and by that I mean Jan Jansen), or perhaps it is because I got extremely lucky. Either way, optional dungeons seem much harder than the main quest (sometimes--I won't say always because the Underdark is STUPID sometimes).
TL;DR After all of my playthroughs, the 4-Dwarf fight in Durlag's tower in BG1/BG:EE (the last fight on the first BIG level), and Illithids in BG2 are the toughest for me.
EDIT: I have never fought Demogorgon, though if I tried I would have a new "Most Difficult" I am sure.
Can I change my answer? Ac'Lec'Tec has never been defeated by my CHARNAME. Period. If I could change one thing about BG, it would be that the lore would give you some idea how to deal with special enemies. I imagine a Cavalier might be successful, but a non-kit me --> death scene (purple with the hand raised) to tell me that the adventure is over.
Concerning Aec'Letec, I guess he can be defeated "quite" easily in fact with the proper setups (but they are mandatory !)
I have killed him in Vanilla BG and BG:EE (with a Pally, then with a Cavalier - easier since they have immunity to fear))
First thing to know is to keep the demon busy while you kill everything around him (either summon monsters or cast otiluke resilient sphere around him).
Second things are buffs !
- Resist fear is almost mandatory for all the characters. - Protection against evil on 3 yards/meters is very useful. - Every spell and potion that boost saving throw shall be used (potion of invulnerability, heroism). - Boost your THAC0 with potions. - Protection from petrification : to prevent the most deadly spell a young Nabassu can cast that morph you into a ghast. - Cast luck on your party, if you have it - Haste on your whole party. - Vocalize for your casters if you have it.
With this setup, his spells (hold and deafness) should not affect your party => boosted saving throws are nice.
Keep magical dispelling ready if thing goes wrong (at least on two characters if the other get stunned). And speed potions if you have to dispell on your party.
Archers with +2 arrows (and arrows of piercing against the hooded guys) . Cross you fingers and send your fighters in melee when everybody else is down.
Nizzidamni'yt (or how ever you write that name). That was on my first BG2 playthrough and I had not a single clue on how to fight that dumb fucker. He just snipped my party away. It to took me *HOURS* to figure out that I just had to use figer of death on him.
On some other playthrough I had the Solaufein mod installed. Vampire Solaufein is the hardest shit EVER. After an hour of reloads I just gave up and tried to cheat him dead (you know, with the hot key). Didn't work. So, I cheated in a dozen Drizzts to take cake of him. He killed ALL OF THEM in a few seceonds. On the next try, I made it about FIFTY Drizzts, who actually were abel to kill him. I never ever ever brought Solaufein to meet Bhodi again from then on (allways left him standing outside since then). Fun story, after picking up the loot of all the dead Drizzts, for each and every item that mage showed up. After the fith time or so, the game instantly went game over.
I also never managed to kill Sarevok without cheating, even after doing ALL the quests in the game. Irenicus and Ammelyssan are just babies compared to him. Gosh, the balancing is so fucked up in BG1.
In BG1: Aec'letec. I only beat him years after my first try.
In BG2: one of the seals at the bottom of Watcher's Keep, the one that summons a beholder queen, a marilith, a drow priestess, a succubus, and Helm knows what else. The twisted Rune was quite hard as well.
Well, funny enough but i've killed Demogorgon easily, Aec'Letec as well, WHILE never managed (or did not try hard enough) to do Twisted Rune. Kangaxx usually gives me a beating unless i use protection from magic scroll & sling+5 or Melf's Minute Meteors.
I've just installed SCSII for BG2 for the first time. Let's see how it'll go. Waiting for when i can install SCS for BGEE...
Playing Baldur's Gate 2 for the first time fighting Firkraag. At this point I started reading through spells that don't have "damage" written all over them.
Mine was the Eclipse party because i had Soulafein in my group. You had to install a mod from weidu to get this feature. Also, I always play on Nightmare. Even when i won, i was still in a bad mood.
These sons of bitches caused me so much grief. Timestops... blindness... ughhh. I had to work hard for this fight constantly dying and seeing how long i could stay alive just so i could see what spells and tactics they had up their sleeve and then just try to prepare my counters.
I remember having to kill many of my party before their timestop kicked in because the eclipse SOBs would come on and instagib my characters. So i killed them myself so they wouldnt get gibbed.
If you like a good challenge then this is it. It can be made real hard depending on who is in your party.
Kangaxx is very, very dangerous, I agree, but he's an all or nothing thing. I won't spoil it for everyone, but with the right equipment killing him is easy (even for a low level party). Without the right equipment, you don't stand a chance.
The first time I played. The Yuan-Ti mage and Tor-Gal in D'Arnise keep were like some kind of perplexing mystery, I was clueless how to go about killing them.
After that, Firkraag. I think I resorted to hiding in a corner and casting stinking cloud at him. The shame!!
edit - whoops! not stinking cloud, the other one, cloudkill.
Though that reminds me. The Ottyugh (sp?) in Irenicus' dungeon, I thought was some kind of mega boss. I think I emptied Imoen and Jaheira's spellbooks at it, so.. stinking cloud, entangle.. I also hadn't grasped the concept of weapon specialisation, so my weak and feeble but highly intelligent and wise elven kensai was wielding a sword that she barely knew how to swing.
Like I said in an earlier thread, the glory days! ignorance is bliss. (sometimes)
You can also park minsc with a 2 hander on the steps above the pit and hit from outside the otyugh's range to fight back.
I'm duoing, me and my low level ward, and out of the blue we get ambushed. Two Ogres, two archers, a mage and a fighter.
I've tried changing my spell selection, but the best I've managed so far is to move my ward out of the way while I hold aggro, figuring they can raise me later, but I haven't managed to beat it yet.
Someone mentioned this with Kangax, but I think it's true of many fights, there's often a trick. If you can figure it out the fight is easy, if you miss it, it can be a killer. And I think on that note, I am amazed looking over this list how many times I find myself thinking "but that fight is easy..." or "oh yeah, that one's a killer..."
For BG1, definitely Aec'letec. For BG2, I'd have to say the Ascension version of the final battle: Irenicus, Bodhi, the Five and Amelyssan, plus Imoen as the Slayer. Luckily I managed to get both Bodhi and Sarevok on my side...
All of the mentioned fights are tough, though I have to agree that the Irenicus/Bodhi rematch in BG:toB Ascension was rediculous. I eventually gave in and toned down the difficulty . Still, even on easy it was harder than vanilla on core ,lol.
Though one fight thats not mentioned here is Draconis in ToB. Seriously if you dont have ascension installed Abazigal was a cakewalk compared to him..
@Pantalion I figuratively LMAO'd, but I literally LOL'd.
@Aasimar069 That is essentially how I handled the Aec'Letec fight, but I didn't use Protection from fear (though Dorn is immune and Monty has a helm that makes him immune).
@Buttercheese There is a Solaufein mod? I am assuming that if he becomes a Vampire in the way I am thinking he does (Bodhi when you return in Chapter 6?), that he is a romance option. I'm glad, since that character was always the only individual in the Underdark I didn't want to punch in the face.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's the oldest and most popular BG2 mod out there oO You really should google around for other mods as well, looks like you missed much
Oh yeah, Aec'Letec also grinded my nerves. The peoblem is his zombie spell and I really HATE having anybody in my party die (also when you can't revieve them because of that). I kinda developed a tactic by which you go down the stairs and kill a priest and hurry up the stairs again. Check if anyone got the zombie curse, if not save, if so reload. Repeat until everybody is dead. Also have summons distract the sucker while slaying his priests. SOOO frustrating.

roflmao! i always had thought, cant i just go get a priest to raise him? but nope the ward is a cheapo that goes off to spend thousands of gold on great gear! why save your foster father when you can do that?
The Demon Knight in Durlag's Tower roughed me up good last night. Either he spammed fireballs and wrecked my party, or I broke the mirror and got wrecked by the mirror fiends. The ogrillion mirror fiend was easily hitting a -8 AC Kagain with every attack somehow. I eventually beat it on like the sixth try by focusing on the ogrillion mirror fiend while the demon knight clone kept everything else busy.
Doesn't Aec'Letec die instantly to Cloudkill? Or have they changed that in this version? Aim it right and you can take out him and all the cultists in seconds that way.
Draconis was always the hardest for me. Did a Tutu playthrough as a Mage right through from BG1 to him and simply couldn't get past him...last time I ever played as a generic mage, Sorceror only from then on!
@alexdelarge nope I'm referring to the final fight with him in the abyss, he takes away cloak of cheese, acid katana, Crom fayer, and a bunch of other stuff, that you get back by killing and looting his 5 split aspects. I felt like I'd climbed mt Everest when the Bastard finally went down.
@talky yep I'm talking about tactics, the improved irenicus component.
If I'm thinking of the same fight, isn't there also a dragon, elder beholder, lich and vampire (or something like that) to go with Irenicus?
Comments
9/10 one of those spellcasters 1shots my mage or cleric.
Also, I hate Mariliths. Those things kill me every time.
