Party of all the same class

@mathuzzz is having a good discussion here: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/21222/mage-party#latest
About an all Mage party.

Continuing that idea, if you made a party of six characters all of the same class, which would be the most fun and the least fun?

Fighters
Druids
Clerics
Rangers
Paladins
Mages
Monks
Thieves
Bards

You can mix and match kits for variety. Some of these would have serious limitations, and some would be overpowered at points. 6 Cavaliers would make dragon fights a joke, but they'd be in trouble against a strong wizard.

True, but you'd be rich! You could buy... potions I guess.

Six Sorcerers, possibly with some Dragon Disciples mixed in, would be pretty awesome. Zero competition over spell scrolls, just over good robes and wands. It would allow each sorcerer to have a different focus, and potentially enable the player to have any given arcane spell at their repeated command throughout the saga.

I do that with wands. Who needs 50 fireballs? I just can't bring myself to use them on gnolls.

In BG1, you could have some serious fun with an all-Warrior party. You may not be able to bash open all containers, but traps would only be a minor nuisance, since most of them would have the hit points to shrug the effects off.

Gold is not a problem after a certain point of the game, so it's fairly easy to keep things under control via stocking a lot of healing potions and running to temples to raise fallen comrades whenever necessary.

I'd mix not only kits, but classes as well because in AD&D, the Paladin and Ranger are considered optional variants of the Fighter anyway.

So my custom party would have:

    - A Dwarven Defender using hammers and/or axes with a shield
    - A Half-Orc Berserker using one-handed swords and maces/flails with a shield
    - An Elf Archer using short bows and daggers (Legolas-style)
    - An Inquisitor (his/her Dispel Magic would come in handy when facing spellcasters) using two-handed swords (and/or halberds) and longbows (or crossbows)
    - A Ranger dual-wielding long and bastard swords
    - A Kensai (your finesse fighter with points in single weapon style, using exotic stuff such as scimitars and/or katanas)

Doing that with NPCs can make things harder because there it's hard to recruit 5 single-classed warrior NPCs without some serious alignment clashes, and you'd also have to use exploits so separate some of them from their pairs. But you could make a protagonist that complements one of these combinations:

    - Khalid, Minsc, Kivan, Ajantis and Kagain (mostly good)
    - Dorn, Kagain, Shar-Teel, Kivan, Khalid or Minsc (mostly evil)

Cool thread. I think I'd love to try all rangers, though I think mages and fighters are the best options.

All thieves or clerics would be interesting methinks. Or perhaps druids.

Thieves would work, a couple of swashies up front, an assassin or two for scouting / backstabbing, and one kit or another at range. With UAI all round, dispelling illusions and monster traps you'd be pretty well set.

All fighters in BG1 would be pretty easy and boring I think, as fighter is most powerful in these lower levels. Things changes at the high levels of BG1 and in BG2. Mages are probably most fun. Thieves would be also great, but only with kits, something like pixie359 suggested. Could bard be accepted also? He is rogue after all. It´s like taking fighter/ranger/paladin as a warrior party.

Interesting topic. One, that I was also toying with several times.

    Here's what I actually tried:
    All Mage Run
    -Evil version: Sorceror(PC) + Xzar + Edwin
-Neutral/Good version: Conjurer(PC)+Dynaheir+Imoen dualled at lvl5 to mage
...actually the Evil group got quite far (Candlekeep Mines as far as I remember) and was much more fun than the other version.

    Casters-only party - Conjurer(PC) + Jaheira + Viconia (interesting one-although difficult at start)

Thieves galore - Swashbuckler(PC)+Imoen+Safana+(planned Tiax)...haven't got far but it was an interesting change of pace.

    What I would try:
Swords, not words! - Berserker(PC)(bastard swords)+Minsc(2handers)+Dorn(2handers) (general rule - only plate mail/full plate and swords allowed) (+perhaps Kagain with axes...it has a blade too!)

GO GO Power Rangers! - Stalker(PC)+Minsc+Kivan

    AC/DC on a tour - Blade(guitar), Blade(bass), Skald(drummer) + Jester(singer)

    P.S.: @Kilivitz - interesting all-warrior party.

If you had 6 thieves you could have each one put all thier skills in one slot and they'd all have like 200 skill at the end of the game. That could be interesting. Maybe throw a bard in for spells and pickpocket.

All base classes, or a mixture of kits allowed?

Bards would be decent. A couple of skalds to sing, three blades (two to fight, one to cast with defensive spin), and a Jester for giggles (and picking pockets).

Also, with the ability to use wands and scrolls you'd be able to actually win the game. Unlike the non caster groups that wouldn't get anywhere after a certain point (or would have to grind experience for UAI).

    Thieves looks fun:
-Swash for fighting (pick pocket) katana dual-wield
-Assas for backstabbing (stealth) short sword/dart
-Bounty hunter for traps an ranged (set trap) bow/scimitar
-Shadowdancer for scouting (stealth, find trap) long sword
    -thief/illusionist (detect illusions) dagger/staff/xbow
-thief/cleric (open locks, find trap) staff/mace

    And clerics
    - 1 fighting (buffed up)
    - 1 healing
    - 1 offensive
    - 1 summoning

Dunno how an illusionist and cleric are part of the thief class tbh...
  • Multiclass. And if you don't want that. Use 1 thief for wand using and 1 thief as potion pack-mule.
  • KaltzorKaltzor Member Posts: 1,050
If Multiclasses are accepted for this... 6 Thief/Mages or Thief/Clerics might be the best possible ones...

Otherwise maybe Swashbuckler and Assassin kitted Thieves.

But most fun, 6 mages is always fun.

and in a weird way possibly 6 fighters (Though that might also be the most boring one as well)...

6 Paladins (non-blackguard ones) might be quite boring because you have 6 less impressive fighters forced to be good...

6 Barbarians (max Con, max Str...) who are 'pretty mad all the time.'

    * Maul: Half-Orc (Warhammer x2 DualWielding)
    * Dash: Human (Halberd/Two Handed Style)
    * Slap: Elf (Bastard Sword + Flail DualWielding)
    * Banner: Dwarf (the aggro magnet) (Bastard Sword + Shield)
    * Blunt: Gnome (Quarter Staff Two Handed Style)
    * Hugh: Halfling (Sling + Xbow)

//Similarly 6 Shapeshifter Druids would be fun early on.. very early
  • FinneousPJFinneousPJ Member Posts: 6,455
If we include multi-/dualclasses it's too easy - fighter's best by a huge margin.
  • BaldursCatBaldursCat Member Posts: 432
I think an all cleric class party would be interesting: All the buffs, lots of offensive spells and some useful stuff you'd usually keep a thief around for, the downside of course is that some of the best weapons in the games are blades or bows.

6 pure fighters would be the most fun.

Not enough healing to go around.
Disarming traps becomes a game of shortest straw.
    Rotating party leader/tank.

The only problem really with 6 fighters would be traps... And possibly mages in ToB and Later parts of SoA...

Also, Grandmastery with ranged weapons is really nice, even with 18 dex (and elves and halflings could go up to 19), A good Longbow and a Heavy Crossbow could possibly make the party's life easier in some fights.

I don't think there are any traps that can end your game, if just use a non-charname high hp char to pop them.

EDIT: Just carry some Stone-to-Flesh scrolls and other stuff like that. I think @Lord_Tansheron already tried a no-thief run in BG2 with great success.
  • KaltzorKaltzor Member Posts: 1,050
I think theres a few that petrify and/or instantly kill in BG2... Plus some can go off everytime stepped on until they get disarmed in both 1 and 2.
