Creating a Swashbuckler/Mage using EEKeeper

Hi,

I know there have been a few threads on this topic in the past, but I have not been able to get this to work. I am trying to create a multiclassed Swashbuckler Mage to use throughout the saga. However, whenever I fiddle with EEKeeper the character just defaults to a normal Mage/Thief multiclass on level up. Is there a way to set up the character in EEKeeper so that he levels up as a Swashbuckler for its Thief levels normally without having to manually change stats at each level up? Thanks for the help!

There is no way to set up a dual-classed character—using a kit—as a multi-class character. That would require more editing than just the character or saved game. You would probably need to edit the associated 2DA and IDS files if you want to make it so the game detects it.

Then let me ask a related question. I want to play a half-elf and romance Jaheira. If I created a illusionist/thief gnome character and switched his race to half-elf using EEKeeper, would he level up as a half-elf illusionist/thief? And would he retain the gnome's saving throw bonuses? Thanks!

@MasterChef, I would say 'probably not.'

Saving throws are adjusted at level-up as per the game files, the only way to ensure that this stays the way you want it to is to manually edit all associated files. Illusionist/Thief is technically an illegal kit/class combination for multi-class purposes when not being used by a Gnome, so just about everything you do with it will need to be manual.

To give your character the save bonuses without editing other files, then you can:-
    • Add the appropriate Effects (effects 33, 34, 35, 36, and 37 are save bonuses)
    • Set the Modifier Type to 0 (to add your specified value to the current value)
    • Set the Value to 2
    • Set the Target to Self
    • Set the Flags to 'Permanent' or 'Instant, Permanent'.
This will give you a permanent increase of 2 so that when you level up you will still have that bonus.

A half-elf will level up as a generic Mage/Thief, I believe, so any additional bonuses or drawbacks will occur (including a change in thief skills) as per a half-elf mage/thief.

You can manually change the required files, but it will affect more than just a single saved game. @CrevsDaak‌ can probably give you more details regarding which files to edit and how to edit them.

You can edit the .2da tables with NearInfinity, yes, but HOW the gnomish/dwarven/halflinglyndly bonuses are hardcoded (the tables can be changes, yes, they are SAVECNDH.2A for dwarves and halflings and SAVECNG.2DA for gnomes).

The classic tables go per class type warrior (SAVEWAR.2DA), mage (SAVEWIZ.2DA), rogue (SAVEROG.2DA), priest (SAVEPRS.2DA) and monk (SAVEMONK.2DA), which is a warrior/priest class.

Anyway, I recommend @Troodon80‌'s idea of adding the effects with EEKeeper, since it's easier (sort of) and it will only affect _that_ creature.

To create a Swashbuckler/Mage, create a Mage/Thief in the game, save, exit the game, open that save with EEKeeper, change the level to 0, lower your thieving skills by 40 (I recommend putting all the points in Detect Illusions at the start, so later you know easily where you spent the points to remove them now, anyway you'll be going to level up again to level 1 so you'll have 40 points to spend seriously now), remove all the innate abilities (note: NOT the mage spells!) and all the effects (there should be none anyway), save that edit, open the game, open that edited save, level up your character and done! Your backstab multiplier will not be set to 1, but you can fix this by adding a permanent effect (like @Troodon80‌ said in his post) but with the Opcode = 263, Parameter1 (also Statistic Modifier) to 1 and Parameter2 (also named Type) to 1.

To create the Swashbuckler/Mage I normally roll a plain Swashbuckler. In EEKeeper I change their class to Mage/Thief under the Characteristics tab, and under the Abilities tab I divide their (Thief) hitpoints by two and I set their levels to 0/1/0.

    -Create a Thief/Mage
    -Save your game
-Put the Swachbuckler kit with EE:Keeper
    -Adjust your levels to 0/0
    -Load your game
    -Level up to level 1/1
-You are now a level 1/1 Swashbuckler/Mage, but you have too much HP, Thief points and Proficiency
    -Save your game
-With EE:Keeper, remove two pips (a level 1/1 Swashbuckler/Mage has 2 pips instead of 4), remove 25 skill points (a level 1 Thief has 40 points instead of 65) and remove 5 base HP.

    -Load your game and play.

This will work for any combinaison. You can create now create some Fighter/Assassin Half-Orc, Kensai/Mage Half-Elf, Ranger/Cleric of Lathander, etc.

PS : Ah yes I forgot about the backstab, you should follow @CrevsDaak‌ instructions to set it to 1.

    1. You don't see race and dex bonuses for thief skills in eekeeper. All points you see are those gained at character creation an level up.
    2. You should only remove 25 (for swashbucklers and thieves, other kits might have a different number) points. Even though you level up from 0 to 1 you still only get the standard amount of points and not 40.

Thanks, I tried to create the Swashbuckler/Mage using the instructions above, but I want to clarify - he will still level up as a normal mage/thief, and I will have to manually adjust at each level up to give him the proper swashbuckler benefits, correct?

@MasterChef, no, you should level up as a proper Swashbuckler/Mage multiclass, without having to readjust stats, abilities etc each time you level up.

No, if you assigned the Swashbuckler kit to your character using @CrevsDaak‌ , @Blackraven‌ , or mine method, your character will progress as a Swashbuckler/Mage and will get the Swashbuckler benefits.

Be careful though that a multiclass character with a kit is always considered specialised, which means that your Swashbuckler/Mage will actually get +1 spell per level, as a specialized Mage. You could always restrict yourself from using one school of magic for example, or to not use the last slot.

Is it possible for anyone to post a saved character file swashbuckler mage? I really want to play one, but I kept ending up with messed up hit points on any import

@schreier I created one. Testing it quickly it seems the kit feature of being able to assign 2 pips to weapons or 3 pip to TWS doesn't work, since the multi follows the M/T tables. I created this char with 3 pips in TWS to gain the unique class advantage.

The file attached is a save game, so put it in your Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition\save folder. You can continue from the save or select Create char, import from save game.

If you need any other edits, let me know. I'm ill and cannot join new year's celebrations :/

Sorry to hear that ... but thank you for the saved game! If you can't take 3 pips in twf, is it safe to assume you can't get 2 in weapons? If so, could you please give the character 2 pips in long sword and scimitar?

Also, can you make it a male? Thank you so much! Hope you have a great new year, even if it's starting slowly

    @schreier Male and pips done.

Hope it's not too powerful for level 1!

Doh ... one last thing (I promise! ) can you make him neutral good?

    Thanks!

Tried to create fighter/shadowdancer, following the recommendations given above. But anyways he has 25 points of thief abilities per level and normal thief's backstab modifier. Is there any way to fix this one time, without having to edit the character every level?
Thanks in advance for any advices! =)

@IceArms‌ There seems to be things EEkeeper cannot do. Thief mechanics don't translate well unlike things like item restrictions that are item bound.

I tried a fighter/shadow dancer multi too but I didn't manage to get Hide in plain sight working. The shadowdancer especially is not handled well since hips, backstap multiplier and point allocation aren't effects you can see easily. You still get the bonus saves and abilities (like shadow step) though.

    Either use @CrevsDaak‌ 's method or @Blackraven‌ 's.

You definitely don't want to use Shadowkeeper with the EEs. Use EEKeeper instead.

I love this build. It is basically a M/T, who gets the Swashbuckler bonus to AC, Hit and Damage + ekstra spells for your mage as if he was a specialist

BTW any thief kit you add to a multi-class becomes better than the straight kit, because they get full thieving skills upon leveling up, and lategame they get more HLA.
