What kind of kits (this is more regarding mod kits) would you like to see in the future?

elminsterelminster Member, Developer Posts: 16,315
I'm hoping to have some free time this weekend to add more kits to my kitpack for IWDEE

I have a list of kits I'll be working on regardless

Fighter kits

- Savage

Ranger kits

-Feralan

Cleric kits

-Treetender (gnome only) (added as of version 2.7)
-Dreadmaster of Bane
-Deathstalker of Bhaal
-Gray One of Myrkul
-Priest of Labelas Enoreth (elves and half-elves only)

Druid kits

-Lost Druid
-Savage

Sorcerer

Black Dragon Disciple
Blue Dragon Disciple
Green Dragon Disciple
White Dragon Disciple
Yellow Dragon Disciple

but I was wondering what sort of kits people would be interested in seeing.

I figured I'd get more traffic by posting this here (rather than in the IWDEE mod section).

Engine limitations (I can't make a mod if it involves any of these things).

1. I can't change what buttons you get access to at the bottom of your screen. In other words if you wanted that lock picking monk you are out of luck.
2. Mage kits. I can't do these without removing existing specialist schools/wild mage since mages are already at their limit. Which is kind of a shame too since physically there is lots of space on the screen for them. Well technically I can make them but it involves a work around approach that I have deliberately not been taking with my kit mods.
3. Anything that is looking to change how a class learns spells probably is not going to be possible. For instance a favoured soul would likely not be possible due to in part how you select new spells as well as the kits impact on other classes.

Like with the avenger would it be possible to make a kit or two with an elemental form that upgrades over level, and give them access to a few mage spells?

    100% resistance to cold
    100% vulnerability to fire

    Chill touch
    Cone of Cold
    Ice Storm
    Fireshield: Blue

Then throw in a frost salamander form for this one, and let it be upgraded at level 7,13,21,30.

I've seen some other kit mods that have this idea, but none of them really seem to go into the depth with it, only a few spells. Would be nice to have 1-3 of these for the druid and actually make changes to the kit with several mage spells and a nice shapeshifting form.

I second the Greenwood Ranger. This kit may actually make me play an Ranger for a change.

Other kits I'd love to see in Icewind Dale are:

    Fighter Kits
    - Barbarian, Arctic Dwarf
    - Forester (a non-Ranger implementation of that kit would be nice for a change)
    - Orcslayer

    Wizard (/Sorcerer?) Kits
    - Anagakok
    - Savage Wizard
    - Witch

    Cleric
    - Witch Doctor

    Paladin Kit
    - Expatriate

    Bard Kits
    - Dwarven Chanter
    - Halfling Whistler

    Thief Kit
    - Lorefinder

    Hello,

I don't know anything about modding nor what kits are already available, so I apologize if this has already been discussed.

I would like to play a monk/cleric. I think it should be a monk with certain buffing spells from the divine book. I guess it's easy to do this kit overpowered, and yeah, that's actually kind of the idea ;) I'm thinking about a "martyr" or "zealot" maybe, fighting with bare fists, but able to buff him/herself up with a number of spells. So no offensive spells, no harm etc, just DUHM, Righteous magic, maybe chant etc. Getting a fist in the face from this char should feel like being smited by (a) God! I played monk/cleric in 3E and it was really enjoyable. The clerical buffs on the monk was well synergized.

EDIT: I had a vague feeling I had already written this somewhere, and lo and behold, there it was:

The Disciple of the dark embrace:
I sometimes imagined a Blackguard/Assassin (single or dual-wielding daggers) would look cool and still work thematically. I even tried to eekeper one, but didn't get it to work (i'm noobish when it comes to that). I've been thinking about if the poison would stack and then using dagger of venom on top of that for a tripled poison attack (attacking with darts or throwing knives from afar) and with 7x backstab eventually. Thematically I would imagine him/her to have pledged herself to Bane or a similar deity, though my lore knowledge is too inferior to know for sure that would work. Maybe he/she could be somewhat like a monk of long death. I would probably imagine this char to be human and lawful evil, obeying the code and ethos of his/her "church" rather than being some random homicidal maniac killing people on sight. A racial enemy might also add to the flavour of this class, perhaps he/she has taken a vow to eradicate a single race from the face of Faerun, but all other races he7she has no quarrel with?

    The Martyr:
In 3E I liked to multiclass monk/cleric since the two fit thematically as well. He/she would use his/her wisdom for AC bonus, as per the monk class in 3E, and use buffs to strengthen offense rather than using clerical abilities vs undead or for summoning etc. I guess it would work in 2E as well and I think it would be a pretty awesome combo, though I would have liked a kit rather than a multiclass. If it was possible to restrain alot of the clerical powers and only retain certain buffs, or add this as a monk kit which gets many clerical buffs.

    The Hunter:
A ranger/bounty-hunter would also be cool, like a hunter living in the forest ("Hunter" could be a ranger kit). I imagine a stalker kit with traps as the only thief skill except stealth, or maybe more like an archer with traps. Bows fit more thematically with hunting rather than swords. Perhaps being restricted to bow, spear and traps, with a few ranger spells like entangle, web, etc could all fit together to create a kit.

A thief kit similar to the Swashbuckler, but enhancing ranged weapon skills etc. at the cost of backstabbing.

Some more cleric kits would be nice, there are a lot of different deities. Some kind of Arcane Ranger kit would be cool. Maybe some kind of combo Ranger+Sorcerer that can pick from the ranger and mage spell lists but functions like a Sorcerer. Something like that for Paladins would be fun too...

2nd edition allowed for a Druid/Mage multi class. Maybe a kit that can come close to that MC build?

Or maybe kits like the Elven Knight, Bladesinger, Spellfilcher, etc... from the Elves of Evermeet or kits from The Dwarves, the Gnomes or other Racial handbooks from the good old days.

As I've refined my methods, this stuff has gotten easier. Making a priest kit that can cast a few mage spells is super-easy; I coded up my priest of Leira, who can cast Illusion spells, in about half an hour. I thought about doing another one with fire spells (burning hands, scorcher, fireball, fire shield, sunfire...) - I've only hesitated because the only such priest I know of is a priest of Kossuth, and I don't want to step on the toes of Divine Remix.

All that said, going toward cold spells... FJ already has the Iceguardian of Ulutiu and a priest of Auril. Isn't another magical cold-based kit overkill?

    - Forester (a non-Ranger implementation of that kit would be nice for a change)

    - Dwarven Chanter
    - Halfling Whistler

It's not exactly a Forester, but have you tried my Harrier kit? It's modeled as a guerrilla fighter, in the Robin Hood vein, with stealth, traps, and expanded weapon proficiency with swords and bows. It happens to appear in the Ranger class do that it can use stealth, but it has no druid spells and no animal empathy.

I've also thought about the Chanter and Whistler, but you have to disable wizard spells, and in these games that's a hard thing for bards...
Doesn't have to be cold, could also be Poison, Earth or Fire. Poison could transform into a slime, fire into a fire salamander or elemental and earth into an earth elemental. Then find 4-5 spells that would fit with the elemental of choice and throw in a vulnerability to cold for the fire one, perhaps a -2 AC to the earth and -2 CON to the poison one.

Through the forms you could make them evolve differently. The earth elemental form could turn out to be a damage dealer, the poion one a tank and the fire one could get even more mage spell and focus on spell slinging.

Up for a challenge? I'd love to see the implementation of spontaneous casters other than the Sorceror, such as the Cleric equivalent, Favored Soul.

I've no idea how difficult that'd be to implement, though. Maybe as a Sorceror kit, but preventing all the current arcane spells from appearing in the selection for the Favored Soul kit, and having copies of all the Priest spells added to the Sorceror's selection. These "new" spells would themselves only be selectable by the Favored Soul kit, and disabled from being chosen by the base Sorceror class or other kits.

No idea what could be done to simulate the D8 hitpoints per level and Cleric-permitted weapons and armour, though, so this may just be dumb ignorance and a hopeful desire talking.

Maybe druid kits for races other than human/half-elf?

iwdee should be fixed to include letting druids be elves. I haven't checked to see if that was done in 1.4.

    Arcane archer
All about enchanting your arrows for different magical effects.
It'd be a fun fighter kit.

I'd like to nominate a couple of kits from The Complete Book of Necromancers here as well, as I imagine they could greatly enrichen the availiable roleplaying styles in Icewind Dale and its hordes of undead.

    Wizard (/Sorcerer) Kits
    - Anatomist (something akin to a doctor)
    - Deathslayer (the mage equivalent of an Undead Hunter)
    - Undead Master (the name is self-explaining, really)

Also, A Plethora of Paladins could give the mod some additional Paladin kit ideas. It may be interesting to have at least a neutral holy warrior to choose from.

Ooooh... how about as a fighter/mage multiclass kit?
When a spell is cast it turns into a special arrow.

Ie: cast magic missile and it becomes an arrow that has the same effects.

The same would be true for things like disintegrate, summon monsters, imprisonment...

On the plus side, the 'casting time' for many spells would be how long it takes to fire an arrow. On the other hand, you could miss.

Personally I just like the idea of either charming someone with an arrow to the chest, or hitting with an arrow, causing a demon to be summoned next to him.

Some of those mage kits from the necromancer book could be turned into sorcerer kits to get round the interface restriction. I don't think sorcerers existed when that book was published.

It has just occured to me that if you made barbarian a fighter kit, you could free up space on the class menu to list mage twice: Specialist Mage and Other Mage. That would make space for lots of mage kits.

You might be able to do it but it would be a pretty complicated implementation if you want to be able to actually choose specific cleric spells. Also I'm not sure how you would block yourself from learning mage spells without also blocking a regular sorcerer from getting them. Frankly though for the amount of work that would be involved I could probably make 2-3 other kits.

That's the point, there are effectively two "fighter" options on the class select menu. It aught to be possible to have two "mage" options instead/as well.

A fighter who specializes with polearms would be very nice. The mechanics of the game make it completely disadvantageous to use them compared to dual-wield (more attacks), sword and shield (more defense) or two handed swords (better weapon choices). Having a kit that balances this out would be pretty cool. I was kinda hoping for that in the myrmidon kit you made for IWD (though I am still currently using it and I enjoy it!)

Last night I was pondering and as usually happens, I started pondering about druids. What first got me interested in druids was their amazing ability to change into animals, trees and whatnot. I always found BG lacking in this department and was glad when the options for shapeshifting got a wee bit more advanced with the new kits. IWD did a little bit better with its wider range of forms and really made the druids more interesting for me.

This got me thinking about a class that mainly uses shapeshifting. Its forms would get more powerful as the character rises in level and/or it would have acces to a lot of different forms. It may be fun to get some specialist forms: a dryadform for charming, minotaur form for bashing, ratform for making a quick escape, memphit form for annoying spell like abilities and the like. May be a bit hard to balance but it seemed like a fun class idea to me =).

Would love to see a Feralan in action. Greenwood Ranger would be amazing as well but would be a bit more tricky to create and balance...
