What would be the most difficult mage specialist/kit for you to play?

elminsterelminster Member, Developer Posts: 16,315
This isn't really a thread about the best mage kit per-se. Realizing that mages are ultimately very powerful either way, I'm just curious what mage specialist/kit you would find to be the most difficult to play in BGEE/BG2EE. This will entirely depend on what spells you like to regularly use.

Me personally it would be the Abjurer (particularly in SoD/BG2). My character would get no Stoneskin, Slow, Haste, Teleport Field, Time Stop, Burning Hands (nice for trolls), etc.

I was never fond of enchanters due to the lack of Magic Missile and Fireball, etc., and illusionists deter me with the absence of Horrid Wilting, but no Time Stop is an absolute deal breaker.

It's the opposite for me, I love the hard control of Enchantment spells, so I can never really play an Evoker.

@JumboWheat01 enchanters are definitely powerful, and especially so in BG1 (I sometimes take Xan along for that), but for my charname I like to have explosive, damaging spells to chuck around. Ironically enough, my favourite mage in pop culture is Tim The Enchanter. If Monty Python's Holy Grail took place in an AD&D universe, he might have more aptly been named Tim The Evoker.

Maybe you should rewrite the question to 'which spell school can you live without'.

I couldn't care less about abjuration either, alteration or evocation is where it's at.

I'm with @JuliusBorisov on this one, except that I'm playing unmodded, yet nevertheless still find that (for my playing-style, YMMV) Abjuration spells are usually the key spells for a Mage (and first picks for a Sorcerer). Thus a Transmuter would be tough going for me.

    Are we talking about a party-wizard or a solo-wizard?

For a solo one, undoubtedly the Enchanter. For a party one, I really don't see big differences.

who ever cant learn chain contingency would be the one for me, plus I could never be a necromancer, I just love mass invisibility way too much, and since I don't play scs ( which im going to assume that every caster and their dog and their dog's fleas probably has true sight to make it worthless) in the vanilla game, mass invisibility is one of the best defensive spells in the game in my opinion, so perhaps no necromancer for me ( even though my some of my favourite spells are finger of death and holme's horrid wilting )

@lunar I think you have a very point good sir!

Although, playing without Remove Magic against parties with Clerics in SoA is pretty harsh with SCS, no Stoneskin is actually way harder. It's not about getting interrupted... It's about crits dealing 70+ damage and you having no way to stop those and your instant death that follows it. Or not getting melted in a single round by one archer, that's another one, besides not blowing up while you're still casting True Sight and such things. Still, Transmuters require more micromanagement, because Abjurers can't get any type of replacement (Gargoyle Boots on ToB, but it's in ToB and it's just two layers of the spell, besides you can't cast it when dispelled).

    based on core rules

I never played kit mage aside of wild magic. I find mage to be very useful when it comes to dispel, so a kit that can't do that would increase the difficulty drastically as stated previously by julius.
