  Badges are glory. Badges are honour. Badges define who you are. Badges are everything.
  In the Old Days, great wars were fought over badges and many brave warriors died to claim them.
  
  Also, they're pretty cool!

  Actually they have a use. It's easy to identify a moderator by the boo with a flamethrower badge, for instance.

  Well, I don't know about the rest of you but I print up 3D copies of the things and pin them to my clothing when I go out on the town. It's a really great way to make a lasting impression on new people I meet!

  Yes, it is easier than the lighter grey backgrounds
  
  And easier than the "Roles: Moderator" tag on your profile.
  
  Just scroll through all the other clutter on a person's side bar to know if they are a moderator or not.
