There are three Tomes of Understanding (Aka, Wisdom Tomes) in Baldur's Gate.

    1: 3rd floor of Durlag's Tower.
2: Quest-related in Baldur's Gate, you get it from the Lady Luck House. You can use it for the quest, then kill the priest in the WaterQueen house to steal it right back, you don't even lose rep because no one likes their deity or them.
    3: Candlekeep Catacombs

@Vuki - Each tome is only usable once.

And clearly, giving a whole ONE of the three tomes to Xzar to dual-class him is anything but the end of the world. Thanks.

Can all of them used by the same character and get a +3 bonus?
Yes; there is no limit on the amount of books you can use on one character.

And still, with three tomes he'll be a better cleric than Viconia (with 3 tomes).

He is a good cleric, but a bad mage. :)

Edwin is the best mage in the game, Xzar is the best cleric. Pick both, throw Viconia out. ;)

Though Xzar doesn't have 50% magic resistance, 90% elf charm/sleep resistance, nor 19 Dex, like Viconia does :-)

Minor details. That just makes her one of the best tanks in the game. :P

Xzar has to dual class as a 6th level Necromancer with 40,000EXP and an 8th level Cleric with $110,000EXP if you dual him to Cleric. There really isn't a better option for him. A 7th level Mage takes 60,000EXP so he'll cap before gaining back his old levels as a Necromancer if you're not careful.

Same deal for Dual Classing to Thief, only he'll make it to level 9 as a thief. (X4 Back-stab)

So Xzar 6/8 Necromancer / Cleric OR
    6/9 Necromancer / Thief.

He's really not wired to dual any other way.

Necromancer 7/Thief 8 gives him 4th level Mage spells. It doesn't give him the x3 backstab multiplier, but it does make him the most powerful Mage/Thief he can be.
