Lothander and his boots

Why does Lothander have Boots of Speed in BG:EE? There must be a good reason for introducing another pair of a very over-powered item which tempts you to acquire them?

I find the question is more succinctly phrased as:

As they are clearly not unique, why doesn't every thief or warrior who could possibly afford them have a pair?

BTW both pairs of Boots of Speed are currently bugged, as they actually Haste the character, increasing the number of attacks, whereas I think they're just meant to increase movement speed (which even on it's own can be *very* useful in some situations, espc. for thieves)

Well, first of all, just because they aren't unique doesn't mean they are common: there are only two around the entire gaming area of Baldur's Gate, for instance. And secondly, the operative words here are "who could possibly afford": I'd imagine they were pretty pricey, though I've never tried selling one.

It is one of those very rare items that completely change my gameplay and general strategy the minute I equip them (when soloing, even more so).

    1. Yes, they have the haste effect. I don't think it's a bug. If you can move faster probably you can attack faster. It seems logical enough. Similar thing is the "Energy Balde". It will cause improved haste, because they wanted faster attacks, and the side effect is faster movement.

    2. In vanilla SoA+ToB you can get 6 or 7 boots of speed. (I am not sure about the seventh one) My party always have these.

Why would boots, that you wear on your feet, help you attack faster using your hands?

    BG1: Improved footspeed only.
    BGII: Full-on Haste spell.

So since we're running the BGII engine now, the Boots of Speed are currently functioning under its BGII form.

I believe in real world your attacks will be faster/better if you can change your position qicker.

It doesn't seem that difficult to change it to how it was in BG1, though. I mean, I'm playing a modded BG2 where the boots are precisely like that.

You are referring to fixpack nor? only doubles the movement rate.

    But the DnD boots:
"As a free action, the wearer can click her boot heels together, enabling her to act as though affected by a haste spell for up to 10 rounds each day. The duration of the haste effect need not be consecutive rounds."

I think that'd be fine with me too, but perma-haste as per spell is IMO a bit too OP, as you can get exactly 6 pairs. You still have the perma-movement boost, which is for some characters helpful.

The description mentions nothing about giving extra attacks, nor does the word haste show up. At the bottom of the description, it states it's effect as "doubles movement rate". So yeah, I consider the extra attacks to be a bug.

It's confirmed to be a bug and will be fixed.

Because R A Salvatore hadn't written his book yet. :P

Alright, then please fix Energy Blades in BG2EE since it shouldn't make the movement faster only the attacks. And I guess we can stack the boot's effects with the haste spell, right?

He has them so it is harder to ping him to death before he walks up to you and gives you the dreaded run around quest of impeding doom that everyone loves so much.

@James_M: probably because this way, you can actually fully "gear up" two melee chars - two boots, two full plates, two +2 prot items, two +1 AC helmets, 2 golden girdles, all that jazz.

and yeah, as it has been already been mentioned, the old BG2 "boots of speed rounds up attacks per round" bug is back, despite being fixed in BG2 fixpack. tsk-tsk-tsk.
also, if you have a half attack and it gets rounded up, that'll also blocks haste from properly affecting your char. (aka, you don't get the extra attack)

I too question how Lothander can have such a magnificent item, and yet still his "life is in shambles ... *sob*"

If you had boots like that... Would you sell them my dear lady?

Who said you would attack with your hands? If my feet moved faster than my hands I would deal out a good kicking!

Do boots of speed come with toecaps?

Can we just have some steel toecapped boots put into the game? Never go to a kicking or dwarf tossing event without 'em

wat. I don't get it. I just mean, if you had such awesome boots, regardless of whether you kept them or sold them, your quality of life would vastly increase. :3

In real life you can make a LOT of swings per six seconds (which is one round) with a sword. If you do make a lot of swings per six seconds then you wont have a chance of actually hitting anything. Attacks per round is just a way of meassuring amount of swings that actually have a chance of hitting (the attack roll is a variant that meassures whether or not the attack hits)
When you do swing a sword you don't just use your hand but your entire body. Your footing is in every way just as important as what you do with your hands (maybe even more so) so it isn't that unbelievable that fast feet leads to more attacks per round.
All that said it is MAGIC!!! Try explaining the physics behind a fireball or time stop or WISH?

On another note the boots aren't actually supposed to give you more attacks per round because it didn't in bg1. Having extra attacks per round is extremely powerful especially at such low levels as bg1. That is why the boots shouldn't give more attacks per round. Not because it doesn't make sence.

Let's hope they fix this in the next patch. I don't feel like using them if this is not how they should work.

I agree, I've not been wearing them in combat, because it feels cheesey as is

How exactly do we know they give an extra APR? I equipped them on my current Cleric and record still says 1APR both in melee and range. Sure he wields a lot more in the avatar animation during combat, but I still think he deals only one blow per round. He was fighting Cloakwood guards in melee, and they would have 1/2 APR more than him. I doubt these guards actually have 5/2 APR... more like 3/2.

Are we 100% sure the Paws of the Cheetah actually give +1APR as it stands??

it doesn't give an extra ARP - if your ARP isn't a round number, it simply rounds it up (and fucks up haste from spell)... in other words, 5/2 (aka 2,5) becomes 3, 3/2 (aka 1,5) becomes 2 - but your cleric with 1 APR won't gain an extra attack, neither would a lvl 7 dual wielding fighter with his 3 APR (and haste would work normally on them too).
