Is the New Patch's text size on the inventory screen jarring?

TenYaibaTenYaiba Member Posts: 212
I've just been free enough to try my hand at the newest patch and the first thing that happened was that the numbers on the quick bar and inventory screen jumped out and punched me in the eyes.

Maybe I'm just being a bah humbug curmudgeon, but I liked my tiny numbers. Then again, I'm playing on an enormous screen, and not a tablet. I can understand that those numbers would be better on smaller screens where it's hard to see the itty bitty numbers. Does this bother anyone else or am I just being an old harrumph?

Somewhere in-between the previous and current size would be nice... though I was fine with previous. Voted toggle though, being the closest poll option.

Yeah, even on a 21" screen at 1920x1080 that is just waaay overboard.

Toggle or even better options for various sizes would be great.

It takes a little time getting used to, but I like it.

I wouldn't mind a toggle option in case I play with different platform/resolution/display size.

I preferred...where it was and kind of upsets my game on my large TV which I prefer to play on...but if it was an option I could turn off I'd be fine with it. But it really messes with me to be honest. It's the one thing I'm not satisfied with.

I'm a huge stickler for GUI cleanliness, and it definitely bothers me. If they could clean up the text and push it off the backpack, I'd have absolutely no problem with it, but it's no different to me than the UI scaling being slightly "off" at 1920x1200. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a middle-ground between that and absolutely no scaling at all, which ruins a bunch of other screens.

The UI improvements were the main reason I wanted the game, as stupid as that sounds. I was really hoping for a completely re-tooled interface, but ultimately the "improvements" fell short for me.

Naw, I got used to it pretty quick. Looks fine now.

I'm ok with progress over perfection and the change is definately progress to me.

Can someone post a screenshot with inventory numbers? I play ipad version which does not have that patch yet, and I am just curious.

I play with my computer hooked up to my flatscreen, so the numbers are perfect for me. I realize it may not be for everyone though, so it would be nice if it was a toggle.

I'm absolutely fine with it on my large monitor-in fact, it's an improvement-but on my 1366x768 laptop, it looks utterly hideous. I think a toggle would be the best way of dealing with this issue.

This is what it looks like on 1280 * 1024 resolution:

I love the new font size. It's saving me a lot of eye strain. I want them to leave it right where it is.

I didn't like it. Someone has already made a mod that reverts it back. No big deal from my end.

I like the big letters but im 43 and have bad eyes....maybe a toggle option would be cool for those that dont like it though.

    I agree.

Frankly, I don't understand how anyone previously unfamiliar with BG would know would the previous text size said. It was way too small IMO.

It should be a toggle option.
I understand that some players like this new font, but there are many others that really prefer the previous one. "Enable/disable larger font" option would solve the problem.

    It's very annoying.

I like it. Even on my decent-sized monitor, it could be straining to read some of the numbers. I could see a toggle though.

I think it's kind of ugly, so I prefer the small font. But it's not a big deal.

Looks good to me. I didn't have problem seeing the old font personally, but I understand that some people did and when it's atheistics vs. headaches I think the choice obvious. Optimal solution would be to have UI setting so everyone could set it to what they want of course.

Shameless bump: Because I would like a resolution on the issue.

It's honestly really bothering me, I understand that for the smaller platforms it would get really hard to see, but the size affects my experience a lot more than I thought something so simple and peripheral would.

The feel of the game has changed. The small thin elegant font left a lot of room in the image blocks, with these huge Playskool(TM) numbers I honestly find it really annoying. I can read the old numbers, I don't need gigantic bold baby numbers to try and match the shape of arrow into the monster shaped hole. I like the other UI changes, but these humongous numbers are plain up bad in my opinion.

    Let's give us an option...

Currently the text is far too big.

Before, it was a bit too small, but I prefer the small text version.

It's a little too big but that's not an issue for me. I don't mind it much.

I like the proposed solution to scale it down from huge to an in between size, smaller than it is but a little bigger than the original tiny numbers. (The original tiny numbers were fine with me too.)

At the risk of repeating myself, there are two orthogonal issues here:
    1. the size of the font;
    2. the digits look pixellated.

The former is subjective whereas the latter is objective. The devs have just scaled up an antialiased bitmap font which result in the digit looking pixellated, obviously because the pixels of the font at its original size are just blown up.

Thus before discussing what size is right for the font, I reckon the devs should create a vector font so that they can then get high quality bitmap fonts at any size by rasterising the said vector font.

Exactly what TenYaiba says. It seems like not much but things like that can actually ruin the whole BG experience which is a lot about immersion feeling and aesthetics, at least for many posters.

Honestly I was shocked. There is a smooth and vintage elegance about BG and its GUI, and for me this breaks it all. Even on a small laptop screen. The previous numbers were a bit too small, so maybe a middle-ground could be achieved.

@ljbo Yeah, that's really the more important aspect aesthetically. It's not so much the size itself but the font style/pixilation that feels a little jarring. Good eye.

Maybe so and I agree with the subjective/objective distinction. Yet, subjectively, I suspectt that even with a refined quality bitmap font, the size of said font would be very much upsetting because it does not match with the rest of the GUI environment and other text sizes.

@Ignatius I am also of the opinion that the font size is too bit actually. But this is small potatoes compared to the pixellation imho.
