Who in your opinion is the most boring NPC in the entire trilogy?

My vote would go between Valygar and Cernd. Valygar gets a little more love because while his personality is just as atrocious and his story is boring, the stalker is a more playable kit than the shapeshifter without mods.

Quayle gets an honorable mention from me as well.

I'd vote Cernd as well in BG2. BG1 has so much less character interaction(and so many NPCs that I still haven't had all of them in my party) that it's much harder to say.

Quayle isn't boring, he's an asshole.

But I think I'd vote for Ajantis too.

Just by backstory and interactions, or does the class and how boring (or not) it is count? If the former, yeah, Cernd. If the latter, pure class fighters are not the most exciting to play. There's no thinking about ability use; once you settled for weapon proficiencies and gear, it's done and they do basically the same in every fight. At most, you boost this same thing they do with potions or spells, but not for a new strategy, just to make them more efficient at same thing. That said, if it's just about the way they are played, I have to nominate Kagain. His stats settle him for tanking, and there is little variation in either direction if contrasted with someone like Minsc or Dorn, who have a less static role. Kagain's backstory suffered a bit due to his abandoned quest, so I'm not judging that.

I like Cernd because his personality fits his alignment. That doesn't mean I take him though.

I am on board with the Ajantis vote, not as much depth as most of the other NPCs in the game.

    Go pester someone else!

I vote for lawful stupid generic paladin (Ajantis). At least Cernd had a quest...

As it is, Kagain fits the bill for generic greedy dwarf who only cares about gold. But his "quest" implies there was something more planned, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Dreppin. He just stands there, has literally no backstory and there isn't much character development to speak of either.

If you are going to go that route, I'd say sleeping man, right after sleeping dwarf.

I find Faldorn, Branwen, Cernd, Valygar, and Korgan (no typo) all very very boring.

Quayle isn't boring, he's an asshole.

IMO sleeping man is more boring than sleeping dwarf. Everyone has seen sleeping man, sleeping dwarf is rarer.

Dynaheir is incredibly boring. She would be cool but her interactions with Minsc are just cold / condescending with no reinforcement to his comedic potential. The fact that they're a team package is awful...and she's seriously dry in every other respect. The worst part is she could be a strong willed good woman but she isn't really. She's just...stern and kind of a bitch.

Ajantis is pretty 2 Dimensional too.

I kind of like Kagain for being a greedy quitter who hates being asked to do anything but he doesn't have much going on storywise.

And Shar-Teel should be way more fleshed out, she has an awesome personality and next to no story.

In BG2 I'm not a fan of Valygar or Cernd for all the reasons people mention, both seem unfinished and 2 Dimensional compared to most of the other NPC's...both don't have many fun interactions either.

I'm kind of tired of Minsc lately, but he's a good character, I think I've just had him on too many runs.
  • I agree with @Messi that the BG1 characters have so little interaction for the most part that it's easier to talk about who is interesting in the game than who is boring.

For BG2 I agree that Valygar is boring. There's not much there for him, and what you do get doesn't push him to develop as a character. I do think Cernd is more interesting than people give him credit for being; his personal quest goes off in some interesting directions, and I like his banters with other NPCs.

I find Nalia comes off as a bit flat in a vanilla install, but I've been playing with the Nalia Romance Mod, so maybe vanilla!Nalia is just suffering by comparison.

@Debaser Agreed regarding Dynaheir. Minsc is so full of personality that it's a real letdown when you pick up his companion only to discover that she brings nothing to the table story or personality-wise.

I think Imoen is the most boring NPC... She has no (!!!) interactions with other NPCs in BG1!

You know, as great as Kagain is as a tank (now bested by Dorn), there's not a lot to him character-wise. He's arguably a bit stereotypical and bland. Although he does get into it with Yeslick, so I think that saves him from being "most boring."

Faldorn is another one-dimensional stereotype, I think. She's a strong character combat-wise, although in all these years I've only used her once.

In BG2 I guess Cernd and Valygar have about an equal 'boring quotient' for me, as least interesting or intriguing personalities.

Cernd's background never particularly impressed me.
Im BG1.. Skie or Faldorn, dont really have any reason to adventure with the party either.

    Wynne takes the cake.

@KidCarnival install BG1 questpack (or maybe it was the NPC Project, can't remember), it's great. You end up going to Entar Silvershield with some "leftovers"...
  • KidCarnivalKidCarnival Member Posts: 3,747
Hm, do NPCs really need a reason to stick with the party? Only very few have that, and it's either for the love of money or having nothing better to do. If anyone, Imoen has a real reason; sharing charname's fate of losing Gorion and being childhood friends. With others, I don't see a really strong reason to stick around after their quests, if they have one, is complete.

    In Baldur's Gate 1
It was Skie and Dynaheir and Xan
    In Baldur's Gate 2
Skie was sort of a prelude to Nalia
Spoiled rich girl who likes to slum
    Baldur's Gate 2
    Baldur's Gate 2
    Jaheira , Imoen and Cernd

All the joinable NPC's I find have their charms. I suppose some of the ones who just there for comic relief, like Minsc, I occasionally get tired of. I don't think Valygar would be exactly a fun guy to hang out with, but I still like his character.

Otherwise, I would say Melissan. I mean, Irenicus was always going to be a tough act to follow, but really... the whole evil wearing the guise of innocence thing I find a bit too predictable, and other than that she has no personality at all.
