Best Player(s) around?

NumoTNumoT Member Posts: 5
In all my time browsing through various sites and forums regarding BG2 I've encountered many great ideas and dedicated players, so I was wondering what your opinions are on the greatest players of the game? Specifically players who make the game so hard for themselves that most normal players wouldnt even make the attempt.

Players who play on Insane+Tactics+SCS+Ironman playthroughs + Any other mod that increases the difficulty of the game.

Who comes to mind? I've enjoyed reading and watching the player Stworca

EDIT: Also do these insane players you know post videos/recordings of their exploits or provide an account of their playthroughs? Links would be appreciated.

There was a guy named Saros who used to solo, no-reload Improved Anvil despite the author saying it couldn't be done, he would get my vote for most skillful. There was another named Frabjous who had unparalleled knowledge and experience which he shared with everyone.

IMHO, a legitimately "best" player will not play with any mods that alter the gameplay (IE : SCS, Ascension, ...), because the game was not designed like this (it's only a fan mod, not something the BG dev made).

On the other side, successfully completing a solo challenge without using true cheeses (ie : exploits, ...). is what make these players amongst the best.

Stworca's only really good vid was the one vs Breu's party, the others are entertaining but nothing special.

And talking about sorcerers, you are but gnats compared to my power...

@bbear comes to mind. He actually completed BG2+TOB without leveling anyone in his party. I didn't think that was possible before he did it...

Finishing TOB with a lvl 1 party? I would pay a ticket to watch that....

You would need a real special cheese platter to pull that off.

@Wilbur I don't think that kind of cheese exists in this planet at all. And using alien cheese will bring the MIB down on you, you know all that silly policy of no food, no doom machines allowed in the planet. ;)

I thought he meant not leveling anyone from start of SoA which is about level 8-9 depending on class, etc.

@mlnevese search on youtube "Baldur's Gate speedrun"

Definitely not Werebear guy. By the way, where exactly did that come from? I've seen it in a lot of threads...

You're probably talking about this thread (link) were OP is complaining that killing Drizzt was too easy when he used level 6 druid spell conjure animals to summon two werebears. He had removed the xp cap obviously.

@Messi that's what bbear did... @Bhaaldog said, I think, not leveling anyone from BG1 on :)

    Best player?
It's not an action game or a MMO.
You are playing with yourself... Everybody with a brain can beat the game solo with no reloads or something like that.

Personally I like the LP of MyNameIsNotLilly. I know he has no criteria for beeing the best player. But for me it's the best way to play BG - roleplay.

I try not to do this while I'm playing BG.

@lordkim LMAO! I'm glad you have a high opinion of me but no, I play with bare minimum modding on Core rules so ... xD However I have been doing things lately that increase difficulty (role-playing properly, no-reload, etc.) but I'm nowhere near on the level of a "best player."

    Thanks though :)

Thank you for the compliment, but I admit I'm not the best player around. I just know enough about the game to cheese most of the encounters. Heck, I never succeed an ironman challenge (either my pc died prematurely or I didnt have the time/will to finish the long adventure).

When I saw this topic title I immediately thought of the Joe Esposito song "you're the best" of karate kid fame lol!

On topic, I haven't been around very long but I would vote werebears since they can kill Drizzt so quick

I would also argue that better players are those who when new to the game, can think for themselves and resolve encounters by creating their own strategies rather than looking at a guide or coming on a forum and asking how to kill a lich/beholder/mindflayer/etc.

IMHO, a legitimately "best" player will not play with any mods that alter the gameplay (IE : SCS, Ascension, ...), because the game was not designed like this (it's only a fan mod, not something the BG dev made).

@Aasimar069 I would argue the 'best' players who do such challenges do so because the vanilla game has become far too easy. As DarkDogg said I think most players with decent experience can do a solo no-reloads which is about the limit of the challenge vanilla BG can offer (unless you want to min all your stats, not level up or whatever) but it's not the limit of the challenge the BG engine can offer. Upon installing SCS, Ascension, Tactics or Improved Anvil you will be confronted with novel situations to which the conventional advice found in guides and on forums does not apply, forcing you to create new strategies and think outside the box.

    I'm pretty sure I have a brain, and I can't beat the game solo, no-reload :(
(OK, I've never actually tried, but I really doubt I could)

It's not for me either. Well maybe a solo run, but solo/no-reload, no thanks. I would go insane before I would finish the game.

I am sure you could do it but you hit the head on the nail -- do you want to?

Solo, no-reload means a much more risk adverse approach. You don't win like that by charging into battle swinging your sword. A lot of people aren't going to like having to prep for encounters, traps, etc. so that you can survive a failed saving throw. It is a different game experience.

On the old BW forums I recall people posting their progress in No Reload threads etc, don't recall any names but some played with the Improved Anvil mod, I would consider them to be among the best BG players.
  • AnduinAnduin Member Posts: 5,745
Is this the thread to shout about the quick reload button?

I've nearly worn my letter L key out...

Don't worry. I'm sure everybody can, but has no desire...
The real competition is - a player vs player competition (Dota, Lineage2, CS, NFS and etc.)
Do you imagine a baldurs gate solo speed run contest?
I like Dota or La2, and I'm pretty good. But I don't want to take part in a BG speed run contest or something like that. Competitions versus mobs - no thanks. Not for me.

    IMHO!!!
