All this talk about Dragons.

But what is your favourite enemy, and what enemies would you like to see more off ?

I have always liked fighting dragons, no doubt about it. But the most satisfying and hardest enemy i have fought, has be the Liches, in BG2 Demi lich, that was a pure pain to defeat, i must have spent the better part of a night to slay it, as my party constantly was Imprisoned.

I would love to see a few more twists involving Liches and other undead creatures. Perhaps a Necromancer gone wild and summoning up Zombies attacking villages, that the player has to stop.

My favourite enemies are the dragons and goblinoids.

Beholders can be fun if you don't use the shield of Balduran. Otherwise they are a joke, but preparing for a battle against Beholders can always be a bit tricky.

I agree about the fights with Liches, but as far as it goes for Demi-liches, I found them not very interesting. Mainly because their main attack is imprisonment. Meaning that you need one spell to protect yourself against a demi-lich : Spell Immunity : Abjuration (I believe?). Sure, they use their Wailing attack too, but I've really rarely seen anyone get killed by it.
Liches are kind of unique since they use a much vaster number of spells, so you need much more solid protection against them :)

I definitely enjoyed the Kangax the Demi-Lich story and having to battle the liches to finally release him was quite memorable.
Actually battling him, however, just basically ends in main character's death and reloads until you finally just cheese some imprisonment protection and then he can't really do shit. Just go into Slayer form, or have Minsc go berserk, use protection from magic scroll, etc.
So, in the case of battles like this, I wish that they were more tactically challenging rather than just requiring some sort of trick to defeat. I loved the battle with Sarevok, with Irenicus, and with Demogorgon too. The dragon battles were all pretty sweet as well.

Liches, dragons, mindflayers are no doubt the most difficult ones to beat, except demogorgon (in my current bg2-run, I had re-load once).
However, liches cannot be in bg1, since the levels is too low, same goes with dragons - and scaling these kinds of enemies down isn't an option. Why? *caps* THE LORE!11 *end caps*

Underdark critters and races are my fav enemy. Especially that bastard Nym. ;)

I have only ever enjoyed battling a Dragon in Baldur's Gate 2. They are such majestic creatures. I feel like Skyrim, even as much as I do enjoy that game, has bastardized them into something way too common place. All that to say this... After reading some of the Legend Of Drizzt books, I have to say that either Dragons or Mind Flayers are my favorite enemy.

Personally, I prefer "horde" battles to fighting one big baddie
I very often will spend hours RPing, having my party and spawned in controllable NPCs (some generic, some specific, and most joinable NPCS) fighting a massive battle against hordes and hordes or smaller enemies, defending the town or keep or what have you

Demon/Devil battles, not the normal ones, but the battles that happen in the wacher tower with the variety of demons (chaotic) and devils(lawful) there.

There is already an abundance of high level casters in the game. What I would like to see is more challenging high level enemies which are not dedicated spell casters.

Mindflayers + Beholders are good but there are already enough of those.

I'd like to see actual aboleth enemies at some point. That one from the fish tank in Ust Natha was rather anticlimatic.
  • SpaceInvaderSpaceInvader Member Posts: 2,125
Drows... I love to pile drow bodies.
I always install Ust Natha Improved Defences: a swarm of drows that try their best with mages, fighters, clerics, golems and demons led by matrons.
Waves and waves of them burning all around my chaotic evil Sorcerer.
I usually keep the strongest matron for last. So she can see how her servants die, how her house dies, how her city dies...
Are they the most evil race of the Material Plane? Not when I roleplay my char xD

Watch out for the Shield of Balduran though. Because if the Beholder dies from its own flesh to stone ray (instead of your hack&slashing) for instance, you won't get the XP for its kill.

The Shield of Balduran does not protect from the spellcasting of Elder Orbs, though. I learned that the hard way, when my fighter wielding the SoB started getting blasted with Horrid Wilting and Imprison spells.

Beholders are some of the cheesiest, cheating-bastardy enemies of the series. I *hate* every single one of them. Apart from the Spectator. He's a bro.
Also, Kangaxx. Damn his piggy little eye-sockets and his "imprisonment, LOL" dickery!

I think that's the problem, there's few enemies in AD&D that are genuinely difficult or challenging. Most are either a faceroll or super-cheaty, requiring not skill but lots of luck and meta-knowledge. The battles against Beholders, for example, are super swingy. Either they pawn you or you pawn them, mostly in a matter of a few seconds. There's no real "battle" going on. You get that with the Liches and to a lesser degree with Mindflayers. However, those are still far from the satisfaction a party-on-party battle gives you.

So, my vote goes to "other parties".

Other humanoids. Well, except for those ambushes in BG: II. After a while, they go from "A worthy effort, but futile." to "more of you idiots? really? :/".

I know a lot of people didn't actually like it, but I would have to say my favorite battle is Tor'gal at the end of De'Arnise keep.

The only satisfaction I get out of that fight is ending his life, because he made Nalia sad.

I've got this mental image of a mummy at the beach with a sort of hat to block out Sunlight, a pail and bucket, and a beach towel... Oh, and sunglasses! An apple a day, keeps the necromancer away; a pair of sunglasses keeps the necromancer who looks at your eyes away, but doesn't keep the other necromancer away unless you eat apples, too.

I like to fight City Guards and Cowled Enforcers on Akhlata, if you provoke for long the mage by using magic constantly in the city and killing the Cowled Wizards that come in your pursuit, will be an time where the strongest Cowled Wizards will come personally to you, and that's a real nice battle.
