First CRPG? Hillsfar. Couldn't get it to run on a PC-compatible but it ran quite happily on an IBM PC. Followed it with Dragonlance. Ah, the golden days of 'PC compatibles'..... NOT!!!!!!

Pre 97/98? I don't think they had RPGs for the Atari 2600, NES and Sega. Those were my old school systems before a PC.

There were a couple of "proto" RPGs I remember on the Atari 2600. One was Adventure, another was Dragon Stomper. Both had a single "character" who could improve in abilities and equipment before facing a final big bad. If memory serves, I believe either could be completed in about half an hour. Really, really simple stuff by today's standards, but still could be a lot of fun.

I'm surprised so few mentioned the Eye of the Beholder trilogy...

Elite! So happy it is coming out again after a kick starter.

    Sim city

    Civ

    Populous

    Lemmings

    Creatures

    Green beret

Dizzy... All of them, gotta love code masters

    1945

Chucky egg, I got to a level with two birds flapping across the screen!

    Jet set willy

    Manic miner

    X-wing

    Tie fighter

    Hard driving

Chase HQ. How could I forget this classic!

    Outrun

    F-15

Hmmm... I think my games sort of rubber stamp my age...

I'm too old. Eye of the Beholder was just the let down after the Gold Box started looking REALLY dated! Although I did love Dungeon Hack (same game engine)!

    F-15

Thank you for reminding me of F-15 Strike Eagle 2. I played that game for hours in the early 90's.

I patiently await the day for Alpha Centauri II ...even though I know it will never happen.

Some of these games aren't RPGs, perhaps, but I remember, as a kid, playing:
    Final Fantasy VII
    Legend of Zelda
    Secret of Mana
    Another World
    Flashback
    Ween
    Monkey Island
    Hook

...And that's just a handful of the stuff I remember!:D
I'd played RPGs before, but Baldur's Gate reaffirmed my love for them, and taught me the ways of the Western RPG.

    I don't know about RPGs...

I guess the Phantasy Star games - the original good ones not the shitty mmo ones that are out now and make no damn sense.
    Does Shining Force count?

I also played lots of the various Civ games, Panzer General, Monkey Island, and so on.

I didn't play any RPGs before Baldur's Gate.

But I played Civ (original and 2). X-Com, Europa Universalis (1 & 2), Mechwarrior 2 (and Mercenaries), and the old Championship Manager series. I actually didn't play Baldur's Gate until ToB was getting ready to come out too, so I was late to that party. Discovered Fallout first, actually (may have been FO2, actually).
