Has the Cat Familiar always moved at half the speed of the others?

The new "2014" patch has introduced re-balanced familiars, on the whole I think this is great and makes the familiars much less OP and now non-cheesy to use, but I think there might be a problem with the cat familiar - it moves at about half the speed of the player characters, so gets left behind when moving as a group, and has no way of escaping if it gets spotted when scouting (its main role). All the other familiars (including the ferret and rabbit) move at normal speed.

Is this a new bug or has the cat always been incredibly slow? I've only recently played a Chaotic Neutral PC.

    I don't know.
Is the rabbit familiar still doing fire damage?

Doesn't look like it's doing any fire damage, though did 5 damage to one of the performers at the carnival

Which is odd considering each attack is only meant to do 1D2 damage

The rabbit also moves at least twice as fast as the cat at the moment

But seriously, are there problems with the cat's speed in the current patch, or has it always been so incredibly slow? Even bears could probably catch it at the moment.

Could have been a special rabbit

Unable to give you an answer for EE. In the original the cat should be faster than a bear or at least was was my perception.
At the moment the cat gets left behind quickly when moving your party in a group, which can be very dangerous for it. Am I to understand it didn't do this in BG2, for example?

The cat was fine for my bard a couple of weeks ago. I think this is all part of an agenda by people who enjoy pavement defecation.

I assume that when they revamped the familiars the cat was set to use the standard cat critter movement animations rather than the SoA cat-familiar movement animations.

This shouldn't be difficult to fix.

@Fardragon - @Candawg has told me elsewhere that "BG2 cats really are that slow. They don't get a reasonable movement speed until ToB", but I don't remember the cat being *this* slow in SoA - can anyone confirm, as I don't currently have BG2 installed. I'm just trying to assess whether the cat does actually require a fix for it's movement rate or not.

It just seems rather odd for a familair who's prime role is scouting to move even slower than the party!

@Toffee - did it used to move at the same speed as your party before the current patch i.e. when SoA familars were bring used?

If the cat is moving slower than the party, it's a glitch. I was playing with a cat familiar last month and it was as faster/faster than my party. If it's slower now there's a problem.

    Definitely slower

    Is that cat picture real???

Okay, I installed BG2 to test things out and they do indeed appear to be as slow as they are in BGEE, so I guess this looks like a non-issue. Their slow speed makes the cat pretty unusable IMHO, as it can't outrun enemies that spot it if it loses stealth whilst scouting (it's main role), so I guess it's going to live in my backpack :-(

That's very weird, my cat was definitely very fast before the latest patch. Perhaps the greater speed was a bug or I've just got a terrible memory (tbh, probably the latter)

    @Oxford_Guy

Can't you use EE Keeper to adjust it's movement speed to something fair and maybe lodge a request to have it changed while you wait it out?

It's also a matter of common sense...
Why should a cat be slower than a dwarf?

    Or a rabbit...

That would be much closer. Your domestic cat can do about 30mph - about the same as the fastest human sprinters. Whilst most species of rabbit are slower than that, jackrabbits have been recorded as doing 45mph.[/cliffclavin]

I also noticed that the cat familiar weighs 1lb in my pack. That's one tiny cat. My cat weighs over 17lbs, and that cat in the picture probably weighs like 30lbs.

Although it is a magic cat

Probably just to prevent low-STR characters from being unable to carry their familiars.

This is an interesting thread. I remember trying to use the Cat familiar in BG2 and being irked at how slow it was. I would propose that a later patch made them faster, even if it means nerfing down their abilities once more.

Even at "normal" speed they would hardly be OP, just useful, instead of effectively useless as currently. I don't think they would need nerfing anymore. Look at the Quasit, that's still got Horror!

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the speed of Cat familiar e.g. in Near Infinity? It would be *so* much more useful if it could obtain normal walking speed, but hardly overpowered

@bhaaldog I want to change quite a bit with familiars. Problem is they are op in BG:EE and needed nerfing...
