Why did the Bhaal-symbol change in ToB?

SamuelVargSamuelVarg Member Posts: 598
In BG and BG2 we hade the original symbol: A skull with glowing eyes surrounded by the tears of Bhaal.

But after you have visited hell it all changes...

In Throne of Bhaal the tears have been changed to a claw that grips the skull.

Why this change without an explanation?

Anybody who knows?

Parhaps. But the first symbio is visible at many points, in the Bhaal temple under Baldurs Gate for one example, during the game run.
...and suddenly during a great war: Hey lets re-decorate and give this dead god a new logo!

I think it's also related to the massive gauntlet Amellyssan the Blackhearted is seen wearing at the end. Since she 'grips' Bhaal's essence pretty tightly.

It should have been her hand gripping his balls.

According to the Forgotten Realms Campaign Set (Cyclopedia of the Realms) by Jeff Grubb, Ed Greenwood and Karen S. Martin (1987) his symbol was a skull encircled by a counterclockwise orbit of drops of blood.

So, the original symbol seems right.

But the Charname has taken some Bhaal tears so that the poor god has lost them... On the second symbol you see the Charname's talons grabbing the power of his father. It's a strong hint the new power is coming.

A bhaal in the hand is worth two in the bush

    Or better yet:

A Bhaal in the hand gathers no moss... or some such.

I guess it’s about marketing. A new game new needs a new touch to sell.

BG2 shipped with the logo of opposing elves; the updated Bhaal logo appears only after you've installed ToB:

I don't see a problem with this exact explanation. Why not give a face lift to a suddenly very relevant concern in the realms?

Bhaal wanted to get rid of that 90s style.

Thank you for that... I once thought that the drops of blood actually were... errr... because of the bhaalspawn and that there was so many of them... And to get so many Bhaalspawn you had to... Uhmm... Well, I thought that... errr... They looked like... *Ahem* I thought that... *blushes*

    ...

    Never mind...
Well the Bhaalspawn are his blood, so that seems pretty accurate.

    *blurted out*

Sperm! Only one gets the prize!

They are in both pictures... Longer in ToB...

    *hangs head in shame*

Because it's not Bhaal's holy symbol....it's the Temp's holy symbol (representing how they snatched away Bhaal's power). Pity (for them) it didn't last long.

Bhaal has been working hard so is getting a lovely scalp massage.
Note he looks angry in the first logo, but happy in the second.

Fix't. Also, these pretzels are making me thirsty.

This message was brought to you by pedantry; "What? I'm just saying..."

To maintain relevance, I didn't know what it was that irked me about the ToB cover design until this thread. Thanks @SamuelVarg. I prefer the old one and I don't know why it was changed.

And here I thought it was just a reference to Melissan's funky gauntlet clutching the power of Bhaal since she feels like she should be the God of Murder...
