After some party deaths (Boromir and Gandalf), they were left with a 7 man party. And that just can't be. Frodo decided to just go solo, figuring that a shadow dancer should have no problem beating the final boss by himself. Sam though, as a fighter/thief, went after him figuring that Frodo would be too weak to do anything if his HiPS failed. Turned out he was fight, as Frodo messed up his timing when trying to backstab Shelob. Good thing Sam was there with his fighter levels to tank a tower full of trashmobs, something a pure class thief couldn't do.
Frodo: Shadow Dancer
Sam: Fighter/Thief
Merry: Pure class thief (just like BG1, the fellowship was thief heavy. He also got in a good backstab against the witch king)
Pippin: Bard (remember his singing part? Yeah, he was a bard. No doubt about it)
Gandalf: Enchanter (notice how he tried to use charm person on the king of Rohan? He also lacks any spells from the school of evocation)
Legolas: Archer (grand mastery in longbows, has the ranger ** in dual wielding, and uses daggers...or arrows, as the case may be)
Gimli: Fighter (grand mastery in axes)
Boromir: Berserker (in his death seen he definitely went into a berserker rage. Those extra HPs really helped, but when the timer ended he just collapsed)
Aragorn: Ranger (yeah...you all saw that coming. Can use a bow. Can use a sword. Can sneak around. Can tank/wear armor, as seen when he becomes a king. Knows which herbs are medicinal and which ones are recreational. It fits.)
@Grum , In "The Hobbit", Gandalf used either "Burning Hands" or "Aganazzar's Scorcher" against the wargs, when Bilbo's party, including Gandalf, was treed by a pack of them. So, the "no evocation" theory doesn't fly for me. Since Gandalf uses a sword proficiently, my theory is that he's either a fighter>mage, or else a special case like Elminster, who can also use a sword proficiently.

EDIT: Unless maybe that was a Flame Arrow...
It looked more like a version of Fire Seeds that needs actual seeds as a material component. And Gandalf is a Celestial, so his proficiencies and abilities don't have to conform to human norms.

Gandalf totally has the signamancy of a wizard, but his actual spells are mostly (all?) clerical. Given he predates FIRST edition, I'd say he gets to do whatever he wants. Still, Gygax did kinda improve the system overall.
I tried to mod an invisibility ring once to make it The One Ring. Added non-detection and a few other things, including that it would summon a hostile shadow when a character would equip it. That last bit didn't work out as planned, as it actually turned the wearer into a (hostile) shadow. Oh the irony.
