@macneil: We'll need more information than this. Where are you exactly in the starting dungeon? What have you completed or done? What is the message you're receiving when you try to save?

Can you zip up and attach a saved game? (YES I do realize I just asked you to produce a saved game for a bug involving not being able to save...I don't know if you have any saves prior to where you're at when the problem started or not...can you try quicksave?).

Just off the top of my head, if you're trying to save or rest with an "event" like the mephits still spawning in the first room after the entry room, that could keep you from saving. If there's anyone in the dungeon scripted to move to you and talk with you, once that's been engaged and until that conversation happens you're in the middle of an event and won't be able to save. If you've tried to "run" from any combat, that too can produce this issue.

If you're still in combat (or the game THINKS you're still in combat) you will be unable to save. Are you hearing combat music or normal dungeon sounds?

If you've been unable to save the entire time since starting your best bet is to retrace all of your steps all the way back to the cage you started in and see if anything there corrects itself.

I just defeated the Cambion Demon, It says I cannot save at this time or I cannot rest at this time. It started the issue once I defeated all the monsters in the library

Could a mob have gone yellow / run away and is still alive? Are you still getting combat music?

Something's triggered an "event" at this point which is what's stopped you from saving. If you can zone out to the Djinn's Area, or backtrack all of the rooms you've been through to the beginning, I suspect you'll either get to or break the event and be able to save. If not, your best method is to move forward till you can one to the Djinn's area or get to the second level of the dungeon. Both of those should break the "you can't save".

If you do find what it is, please re-post here so we can look at it.

There is a mephit in the Library area (if it's the same one I am looking at right now) that looks like it can disappear (go invis, hide, etc.). Perhaps that's what's happened...it's tried to flee or gone invis and is not attacking.

Did you happen to use something a mind affecting spell or something of this nature?

Can you use detect invis or some such?

no to both, there are no enemies in the area, I am going to try to proceed to another area and see if that fixes it. The mephit is dead.

In the vanilla game you couldn't save near the Cambion before he was killed, and I think later you also needed to move, because of the giant animation moving or IDK what shit, i am lazy to write more.

I bet I know what it is. I would not be surprised if one of those golems was trying to dialog with you thus preventing the save/rest. You know, the two that come when the alarm goes off in the mistresses's room. igolfle3.cre and igolfle4.cre to be precise. I seem to recall having this issue with those two before.

You see, they have to walk from one end of the dungeon to the other once the alarm goes off, all the while preventing save and rest, but they tend to get a bit lost on the way so it is easily possible that you missed them and they are still in there looking for you and jamming your save and rest functions. They could probably do with better programming or something...

So my advice is find them and kill them and that should solve the problem. If not then it is something else.

Also, there is a way you can force the game to save for you. Once you have the portal key go through one of the portals and the game will autosave. If you can get the issue to happen again then do that and upload your autosave file here and we will take a look at it.

To upload a save file simply find it on your computer and zip the whole folder and attach it to a post here.

is what I was thinking the whole time. Sounds exactly like something that happened to me. It makes things "fun"!

@Gate70 Spirit armor and the like shouldn't (and doesn't as far as I can tell) prevent rest or save. I'd seriously bet you anything that it is those golems. I will make a report of it in the tracker since even if that isn't it, the golem issue should be addressed.

@Tresset it doesn't in the standard game. In BGII:EE if you fail the saving throw you are unable to rest because of the deferred damage. On the tracker as issue 6966 a dupe of 7042.
    Cheers

Huh. So it is! Why did that get changed? I remember sleeping after failing that save before... I have been gone from this game for too long...

I am still placing my bets on the golems but that could easily have happened too.

@macneil, can you upload that save game?

(Use WinZip, WinRAR, or 7-Zip, then attach the archive)

Issue 7224 indicates the golems can get stuck on the way so that may also be interfering but an area transition to the other part of the dungeon would suggest they're not the issue?

@Gate70 Yeah, I suppose I may have jumped the gun on that one. I edited the report to be more accurate. Still trying to get back in the swing of things here.
