Dual Class Assassin no Backstab

I've read a couple of other threads regarding the dual class thief getting no backstab multiplier on their paper doll screen (forgive my lack of terminology, I'm a n00b), and I've got the same issue with my character. I have also verified that not only does the Character screen show a x0 multiplier, but I actually cannot successfully backstab. I go invisible, position myself correctly, swing and hit (tried with multiple weapon types, all base thief usable) and when I hit it just says CHARNAME did x Damage; no backstab notice and no extra damage.

Any help on this? I'm using BGEE with no mods, through Steam, and have no experience playing around with .ini files or the like. I just want my assassin to backstab like he's supposed to.
