I like Vakarian 's idea, but it could give you exceptionally high stats as well as exeptionally low ones. you could instead roll 4d4 it can't give you above 16 and not lower than 4, with an average of 10. oppossed to a max of 18 and a min of 3 with 3d6 with an average of 10.5.
I agree with @Gotural that Ability scores of 7-9 are below average, even for a commoner. That would be someone who came up snake eyes in the genetic game of craps. 10.5 is average. So there is the premise of playing a poor specimen for adventuring even for a commoner (7-9), and playing someone who is average in every respect (10-11).
I'd probably play a halfling cleric to get the bonus with the sling, and give him or her the Gauntlets of Dexterity. The Ring of Sune would help too of course. I'd use the character to cast spells, hurl sling bullets, and stay out of melee.

Can't push enough times agree for this post, especially the later part.
Just because you're playing a 'commoner' doesn't mean you have to play like you're taking the short bus to school. The halfling that is proficiency with slings and find a pair of magical gloves to enhance his/her aim and dexterity would be quite the character to roleplay.
Play her as a cleric and you might be granted the ring of Sune by your god/godess to help you on your journey. This won't make you any less of a commoner, it just makes it so that you work with what you get.
Yes, you aren't very pretty, strong nor clever. But you'll still drag your way through the sword coast, because you have to.
I love this idea. I have used shadowkeeper to make me a mummie, and unfortunately I shambled around overly slow, but had great fun. Elminster didn't even blink. You would be surprised how accepting most people in the Gate are...
I actually like the idea you propose, but as a commoner, you would want to go farming, or mining, not actually adventuring... Because you would be a commoner... And it is uncommon for a commoner to go adventuring thus making you uncommon from the outset... AND NOT A COMMONER!
*Anduin's eye's spin...*
Anyway, perhaps play as a boy or a girl... And go on AN ADVENTURE! (If you could use the little boy soundset as well, that would be really cool... *In a cute-i-fied voice* I WANT MY MOMMY ! and YOU WANNA FIGHT? COME ON YOU WANNA FIGHT?
Here's a silly addition to the challenge. You can only move around a map randomly. Not sure how you'd go about doing that (though I'm sure you could write up a script for your character to do this) but it would make the game a huge pain hehe.
