How would *you* play a Commoner CHARNAME?

I like Vakarian‌ 's idea, but it could give you exceptionally high stats as well as exeptionally low ones. you could instead roll 4d4 it can't give you above 16 and not lower than 4, with an average of 10. oppossed to a max of 18 and a min of 3 with 3d6 with an average of 10.5.

Or just 3d4 :D which sounds more challenging!

Simple. Play a mage that never uses spells! Don't copy anything into the spellbook & just clear out your memorized spells.

I agree with @Gotural that Ability scores of 7-9 are below average, even for a commoner. That would be someone who came up snake eyes in the genetic game of craps. 10.5 is average. So there is the premise of playing a poor specimen for adventuring even for a commoner (7-9), and playing someone who is average in every respect (10-11).

I'd probably play a halfling cleric to get the bonus with the sling, and give him or her the Gauntlets of Dexterity. The Ring of Sune would help too of course. I'd use the character to cast spells, hurl sling bullets, and stay out of melee.
