A turnip curry equals a blowout similar to a red dragon drinking a lake of firewater and lighting a cigar with a wand of fire... Why it reminds me of the time back in 678, when we had that plague of giant spiders, boy bad year for flies and halflings, that my Uncle Gunduin, not to be mixed up with my Aunt Ganduin, although they are hard to tell apart from a similar beard trim they both favour, decided to make a turnip curry with a little more zest and fire. He climbed the cloudpeaks looking for the rare cloudpeak chilli pepper, that grows on the back of hairy blue yetis, not the red ones mind, you only get cloudpeak carrots from those. He found a bright blue yeti, he was clever, but not as clever as uncle Gunduin as he made a cracking deal of two broken crossbow bolts and a shoe and he managed to get all the cloudpeak chilli peppers he could eat. Back home the curry was made and Uncle Gunduin made the hottest curry everknown to Gnomekind. Unfortunately it was not just hot, it was evil. Uncle Gunduin breathed molten fire from his mouth for a week, he actually made a bit of money at the local blacksmith, replacing the forge and the bellows, it was the bellows we think did it, looking for some relief he asked the smithy to blow some air over his tortured mouth. The resultant blowback destroyed half the town and ruined Uncle Gunduin's brand new pantaloons. We always have a good laugh at that. Oh the day everyone saw Gunduin's bum. In fact it is celebrated to this day at the old town and people walk around with holes on their pants. Note not in. Because that would mean a whole other type of town, and I'm ashamed you would think that way!
Heh. "This bar is too darn SHORT" hehe. hehehe. Sorry...
And most people are boring and choose humans. Most of the people who don't do that are too intrigued by the "elven beauty and charm". More like tricksters and manipulators, I always say.
Hey I like elves with theirs magical skills and charm, and they will not fall just because they are taller then the dwarfs or halflings :P As I remember a whole clan of dwarf was falling in theirs own mine and their shortness didn't help them much :P Don't get me wrong I like halflings and dwarfs too they just not my favorite.
I'm always too tempted by the longsword & bow bonuses to pass on elves. There are a lot of great pictures to use for elf Charnames also.
Having said that, after reading some of these posts, I might have to delve into a halfling for my next play-through. Too bad there aren't any mixed breeds of halfling...

This was so hard :'D I prefer playing humans for reasons even I am not aware of, but I really love halflings and dwarfs. I do find half-elves to be unbelievably lame though.
In regards to racial bonuses, I'd probably say Half-Elf, Elf, or Dwarf. I always pick human, though, as my first character, or when I'm trying to create a character which best represents me, because I'm obviously a human and typically it's the most basic and balanced of all the races.
In order to try out various dual-class combinations, I've rolled more Humans than anything else ... but that's simply because it's only Humans who can dual-class, not because of any a priori preference.
I always choose first what Class (or Class combination) I'm going to play, and then select whichever (allowable) Race is most suitable for that Class.
I rarely find myself attracted to playing any pure-class except (of course) those which aren't allowed to multi-class or dual-class. Whenever a Class can be multi-ed or dualled, it makes sense to do so.
Within that (quite significant) restriction of not using pure-class except when I must, I've noticed that a couple of Races almost never turn out to be the best choice. In particular, I struggle to find anything at which a Halfling would be best ... I think Halfling might arguably be optimal for a pure-class Assassin, but that's about all. I also find, perhaps even more surprisingly, that there's not very much for which Dwarves are the best choice ... they're good for Dwarven Defender (obviously, since no-one else can do that), but otherwise they're a just-about-feasible alternative to Half-Orc for a Barbarian (where shorty saves and good CON help offset the AC weakness), and not the optimal choice for anything else (mostly because their DEX penalty is crippling).
Note that I'm not saying that Halflings and Dwarves aren't characterful and interesting, it's just that they're not the optimal choice for most careers.
I'm a little bit late to the party but let me put @Anduin 's mode on:
Brothers and Sisters, Humans, Elves, Half-Elves, Gnomes, Halflings, Dwarves and Half-Orcs, Xvarts, Taslois, Kobolds, Giants, Oozes, Mind flayers and Beholders, let's spread one message, the message of love:

Hail, thunder and fire will fall from the sky!
...
Well, maybe after a curry. Better out than in.

Halfling + Elf = Elfling
Halfling + Orc = Orcling
Halfling + Gnome = Gnomeling
Halfling + Dwarf = Beardling
Halfling + Human = Threequarterling
The possiblities are endless!
Halfling + Halfling = Fullling
Halfling + Xvart = Drunkling
Halfling + Tasloi = Weakling
Halfling + Kobold = Yippling
Halfling + Giant = Hodorling
(only half as annoying as a full troll!)
Halfling+Ooze = Puddling

I find myself rolling gnome often because of aerie romance though
