From the artistic standpoint I also like Brynnlaw and the external map of Windspear.
- varied enemies (golems, undead, werewolves, adventurers, ambush from orcs,...)
- non linear: you are not forced to kill firkraag right away, the king strohm part of the dungeon is completely optionnal
It has a unique beastie that you need to assemble an item to beat... It has betrayal... It has betrayal again... It has an insane cook... It has the return of a familiar foe... And it has a frickin' dragon at the end!
Because I like to hear Irenicus's voice.
Because this is where Yoshimo is first met.
Because I like the feeling I get when "Ohhh, first splint mail!" "Ohhh, my ring of princess!" "Ohhh, FINALLY 40 arrows!"
Seriously.
Whilst I prefer Windspear, I actually really like Chez'Cus... the idea of the Dungeon be Gone mod horrifies me!
I also love the change they made on the last update, where the genie now holds a more relevant item.
I normally make 3 trips to watchers,
first trip as soon as I have a decent party put together,
next trip when my gear is not total crap,
and a final one when I actually have levels.
Also its just really the fun combination of stuff you get to fight, gith, mind flayers, dragons and demons all in one place, its just tooo goood.
Maybe if I had gone to Windspear first I might have looked at it differently, but that was the dungeon that made me go 'Whoa, this isn't BG1.'
I don't care for the flail though nor its ability to become a player stronghold. There are better ones.
Plus I kind of like nalia now (I used to feel she was a clone of imoen with all the important stats bring identica between them. She gets into my party with decent regularity for at least a couple of levels.
The first dungeon I went to after getting into the main game.
And, actually, I am the kind of gamer who prefers more "medieval" and a bit less "high" fantasy. So for example Watcher's Keep for me is really overdone, too much magic, too much fantasy.
de'Arnise Hold is an incredible, realistic castle, with nice plotline. Every single castle I visit in any game, I compare it to this one. Even 3D games are lacking.
I only wish there was even more to do with it after you become the Lord of it. Unfortunately the Strongholds aspect of the game is not something that has been expanded by the EE.
I might have voted for Watcher's Keep, except it has level 3, the Maze level, which is like Mr. and Mrs. Suck had many, many Suck babies and their combined suck added up to that level. That level is just all kinds of annoying.
CARTSON THE MAGNIFICENT! LORD OF THE LEEEEVELLL!!!
I'm a sucker for cheese and ham.
