@Iroumen: Yes, vanilla is very different. In fact, I don't remember seeing a single Dispel Magic spell outside of the final battle, and there are only so many Dispel Magic traps. Blocking Dispel Magic has never been particularly important in the original game.
A few mage levels would indeed give the cleric of Mask enough Mirror Image spells to handle half-dragons and such. If you went up to level 7 or higher, you'd even get MGOI to block those Dispel Magic spells. The only problem is that investing 4 to 7 or more mage levels takes 4 to 7 levels away from your other classes, and also can impose a 20% XP penalty for a monk/cleric of Mask. It's usually not worth it to invest in low-level mage spells at the cost of high-level cleric spells, but a solo character has to fill all roles. It just means the character's resources are spread thin.
Clerics are fantastic summoners. Aside from Animate Dead, which they can cast as a level 3 spell and creates some remarkably strong critters that scale with level, they also get monster summoning spells at every spell level, from 1 to 9. Solo characters can rely heavily on summons to deal damage, but there are limits on how much summons alone can achieve outside of HoF mode.
One relatively cheap way to deal lots of damage without investing in Strength or damage-boosting effects is to just use Mordenkainen's Sword. It's a level 7 mage spell and out of reach for most cleric-based builds, but it gives an attack bonus of 4 plus your class level (granting +18 AB at level 14, more than most fighters or clerics could achieve) and deals 4d6+3 base damage. And since luck applies to each of those 1d6 rolls, a single Luck spell can bump the average damage from 17 to 20.3. It mostly obviates the need for high STR and AB buffs.
Gate70: Teere, human female Priest of Tyr. Corey Russell: Corarcher, elf male Archer. Grond0: Mis, elf female Archer.
We're in what used to be Centeol's lair. Corarcher is happily gripping the Spiders Bane sword.
As we wander through Cloakwood Mis picks up a quartet of guards and leads them a merry chase. After a minute or so Teere relents and asks Mis to gather them round. Success.
On to Drasus and his gang outside Cloakwood Mine. Buffing is done but Teere shows herself while trying to move a pair of skeletons and battle starts before we intended. Not that the outcome is ever in doubt.
Corarcher is concerned about how to deal with Davaeorn and his two Battle Horrors. Teere shrugs and fronts the horrors while Corarcher and Mis add their melee weight by repeatedly attacking from the shadows to boost their attack rolls. Davaeorn predicts we will not be able to kill him, and pulls out all the stops to prevent his prediction failing. Thou shalt not fireball thy neighbour self.
On into Baldur's Gate, where we quickly work through a number of tasks to upgrade Mis' shortbow to a +2 item and so on. Vay-va is most put out as Desreta takes a Command.
At some point Mis accidentally (ahem) guns down Vail, then requests help in compounding the mistake (ahem) with the rest of his party.
Eventually we head up to the sixth floor of the Iron Throne headquarters for an elevated alfresco nap. Newly refreshed we santuary / shadow our way back down to the fifth floor and position ourselves in the back room. Teere buffs the party, silences the enemy and signals for some arrows of detonation. Bang bang boom boom.
With that done we head to the Flaming Fist headquarters, confirming we have previously dealt with the ogre in the sewers and the doppelgangers at the Seven Suns.
After being arrested at Candlekeep we make our escape thanks to Tethtoril. Protection from Lightning and Fire are used to loot the tombs, although Mis' lightning protection wears off. Teere has a spare but foolishly casts it on herself so we sneak past the lightning trap... and... Mis stumbles over it. With a mighty 4hp in the tank she's not too worried but Teere decides to return to the library room and rest.
Corarcher runs out of arrows while shooting at the Elminster doppelganger and races in to attack by mistake. Much running around ensues before the doppelganger is downed, then Teere heals both archers and the party rests. For all we know, Prat and his gang could be just around the corner but that's something to worry about (incinerate) next time
Stats Teere has 50 kills. Corarcher has 130 kills. Mis is extending her lead, 241 kills.
Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 136 - update 1 Main (Halfling Swashbuckler, Grond0); Ooisae (Half-orc Cleric of Talos, Gate70)
As usual we sneered in the face of death early in our session and immediately rolled up a new pair of random characters. After a run of mage types in recent runs, this time we got another decently balanced combination - but with a cleric providing the spell support.
Ooisae quickly told Shoal to die - and she did. Travelling to Beregost and then down to Nashkel there were no problems, but there was a nasty moment on the way back to Beregost after buying a scroll of PfP. A bandit ambush saw Main hit several times and he had to survive a couple of misses when a critical could have eliminated his remaining 11 HPs.
The basilisks were soon shot down to get a few more levels and Mutamin put up no defense after being silenced. Kirian's party were also struck dumb and 3 of them subsequently failed to save against commands and were quickly killed. Lindin saved against several spells and finished off the attacking skeletons, but in the meantime Main had picked up Kirian's long sword and, with a proficient melee weapon in hand for the first time, his first swing with that produced a fatal critical. After picking up a couple of rings on the way through the FAI, the duo tried their luck on some ankhegs. Skeletons and commands dealt with half a dozen or so of those before Ooisae decided he'd taken enough acid for one day.
Tenya got a bowl back before a course was plotted back to the south. Tarnesh was silenced on the way to do some more tasks in Beregost. Silke there was spared being silenced in order to get a potion of defense from some innocent travellers (Ooisae had planned to try and command one of those to give Main the chance to attempt a pickpocket, but the swashbuckler was too dozy to pick up on the opportunity). Greywolf saved against several spells and landed some hits of his own before he eventually froze in place. Another extended trip then saw Samuel being saved before returning to pass through the Cloudpeaks - pushing reputation up to 20 in the process. There was also an interesting skeleton ambush around there when Ooisae successfully destroyed a skeleton with his turn undead ability, despite only being level 6. Bassilus failed to complete a spell to boost funds and allow a bit of shopping (Main immediately wasting most of the money though by buying the staff +3 that neither character is likely to use). The final action was a trip to Durlag's Tower. Two battle horrors there were overcome essentially in melee, though hitting them wasn't easy and Main finished the last few HPs of both off using a wand of magic missiles. Basilisks on the roof proved easier targets, with the initial lesser one failing to deal with a potion of mirrored eyes before skeletons were produced to tank the greater ones above. Main, swashbuckler 7, 48 HPs, 68 kills Ooisae, cleric of Talos 6, 48 HPs, 69 kills
While waiting for the new improved anvil to come out I finished a game of PlanEscape Torment (and I got a second kid to keep me busy haha). Wow I forgot how well the clues in that game make for a storyline. Too bad I cannot noreload that game. Modron cube was fun to do again.
If IA does not come out soon I will just start some test runs with the old (current) version. I do dislike the v1.3 patch though... Anyway, soon some posts.
I play with a bunch of mods installed via BWS, and if I want to get through BG1 quickly, it's basically a five-step process:
1. Find two Potions of Invisibility. 2. Go to the ruins of Ulcaster and enter the mod-introduced lower levels (the entrance is near the south of the normal dungeon). 4. Drink a Potion of Invisibility, grab the Amulet of Wyvren Summoning, and drink another Potion of Invisibility to escape the dungeon without doing any fighting. 5. Kill everything with the Amulet of Wyvren Summoning.
The Amulet of Wyvren Summoning is a wildly overpowered and mispelled item from some mod that lets you summon Greater Wyverns once per round without limit. Since the amulet never runs out of charges and the wyverns are really strong, the amulet can win every battle in BG1 and SoD except for the final boss of SoD.
@Ygramul: Personally, I only did it so that I could speed up a second try at a tetralogy run. I died in late BG2 but wasn't ready to abandon the run, so instead of doing all the work all over again, I just cruised through BG1 and SoD using all the mod-introduced items that I had previously ignored.
It takes me like 60 hours to finish BG1. (I also auto-pause any time one of my party members so much as sneezes.)
What is the current going rate on finishing BG1? I s'pse the clever peoples can speedrun the thing in a mere lunch break these days?
We've done BG1 in a single session on the odd occasion, but I don't remember ever trying to do that as a speedrun in MP. It probably takes more like 6 hours for our typical approach - that tends to be geared to roughly hitting the XP cap by the end.
What do you do then? Sirens & Basilisks?
It's pretty rare that Shoal doesn't kick the bucket early on. Things done after that are much more variable, but the basilisks are often the next main target and the sirines also look like an easy early source of XP for most combinations (assuming we have either a thief or someone with 18+ strength to get the potion of clarity).
How do you resist the temptation of furious anger against Firewine Kobolds?
Quite easily actually. The furious anger tends to come from taking them on, rather than not doing so . With only 2 characters to manage (and those controlled by separate people) I don't think in fact it would be too bad to get through the maze, but there's no real reward there to give us a reason to do it. The traps would also be a bit off-putting as we rarely buff against traps and these days we both have a drinking problem when it comes to healing potions .
Don't you do Durlag?
It's quite a while since we've done that. Partly that relates to the trap issue again, but also to the fact we don't need the XP or treasure ...
*nod*
Occasionally, I do permit myself to start in BG2.
When my OCD does not permit it though, it is the slow endless slog through BG1, I'm afraid.
It's quite a while since we've done that. Partly that relates to the trap issue again, but also to the fact we don't need the XP or treasure ...
It's impressive to get through BG1 in 6 hours.
I usually do Durlag, and that alone takes 6 hours or more for me. And more than once I lost a charname to the demon at the end. (The dagger battle upon return is easier in comparison.)
Today's session was intended to see Shagrat boosting his reputation, but lasted less than 5 minutes. Mr Colquetle provided an initial rep boost before Shagrat went to High Hedge intending to buy the potion case before seeking out Melicamp - first though he needed to dispose of a few gnolls in the way. Doom + cloak made one of them change sides and doom + charm person converted another - which was shortly the only gnoll left. With a couple of summons attacking it as soon as it tried to switch sides again the end wouldn't have been long coming, but it came slightly quicker than I expected .
I couldn't resist leaving the game running while I quickly updated my notes, even though I'm well aware that's a dangerous habit. In this case the gnoll must have been scared by the hound spirit or confused by the fox spirit almost as soon as I left and started to run away. Once an enemy is not in immediate melee contact, it will then choose the PC as the target even if summons are closer and it would potentially only have taken 2 attacks from a gnoll (which requires just a couple of seconds in my game) to remove Shagrat's 37 HPs. I came back to the game a few seconds too late as the death animation was in progress ...
I'm pretty sure this time can be beaten with a bit more optimization. I think it's nice to see someone do that, but yeah, the BG speedrunning seems pretty quiet, if not non existent.
Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 136 - 2nd and final update Main (Halfling Swashbuckler, Grond0); Ooisae (Half-orc Cleric of Talos, Gate70)
So, having died first thing this morning, watched some cricket, caught up on the Forum posts, browsed the BBC website and watched a video of our Trio run from yesterday I thought I'd try and finish off a mage run I had as part of my long-life challenge. The Ravager was no problem and I was hoping that this time it would prove 4th time lucky for this character in the attempts that have reached Mel. I was happy with my strategy, but a mixture of a bug and imperfect implementation saw me stunned by an earthquake to fail once more .
By this time it was nearly breakfast time and that led into the normal family morning routine before I wondered whether Gate70 was around for some multi-player. I warned him that I wasn't on good form today, but he decided to chance it anyway .
A few skeletons made pretty short work of the sirines (despite one of them being feeble-minded) and Ooisae managed to tank the golems without taking much punishment. The Doomsayer then got a taste of the power of cleric buffs as Ooisae landed several meaty blows on it. Encounters with Brage, Neira and Arabelle all went well as I started to feel that things were turning for the better today.
And then we came across Meilum. He saved against a couple of spells before being commanded to take a quick nap. As he got up at near death, I reasoned that one more blow from Main would probably finish him so stayed in melee even though Meilum saved against Ooisae's follow-up command. Main was hit himself, but almost at the same time landed a blow of his own - and watched as Meilum failed to go down. I hesitated for a moment, wondering whether to risk staying in or play safe and (as usual) I took the safety-first course . Regrettably, that moment of delay meant that Meilum got another attack before Main could get out of range - and Main headed safety-first into a coffin ...
30 minutes is super. Not noreload though due to charm issues but really an effort. I play a lot more slowly . I have to plan it a bit but I'll give it a shot this week.
Almost thought I had a broken install when BG2 crashed on entering Chapter 2. Turns out that skipping the cutscene was the problem. Once I allowed the cutscene to progress normally, the game no longer crashed.
My recent attempt to make progress with Shagrat in a LoB / SCS installation ended so early I thought I should have another go. However, rather than trying Shagrat again I thought I would pick up another character I've tried this challenge with before, i.e. Wimp - her record should make the derivation of her name pretty obvious. In her first hour, she's: - learnt the identify scroll from Tethtoril (actually I had to restart 3 times to succeed with that, but as it's the only spell Wimp can safely make use of I thought it justified getting her off to a guaranteed good start). - summoned a pseudo-dragon familiar and watched as that killed Imoen, Xzar and Montaron. It did the same to Shoal to give Wimp a whole 2 extra HPs for the 2 levels gained. - travelled to Beregost to get a cloak from Algernon. Used that to charm some sirines at the temple. Dogs wore them down before the familiar finished them off to get Wimp 2 more HPs for level 4. - the pseudo-dragon (unlike some other familiars) is immune to petrification, so was able to chew its way through all the basilisks except the 2 nearest Mutamin without real trouble. That got Wimp to level 5 with 2 more HPs. Korax joined in the fun against Mutamin to provide level 6, but there were no HPs gained that time (I've noted before that die rolls appear to be bugged when constitution penalties get to 2 HPs per die).
Kirian & co are also due some charming treatment, but that will have to wait for next time.
@Grond0 I sort of understood your logic in a neutral character killing both good and evil. From that logic, how is it that a good character kills Imoen?
I have done a new installation and started again with a Gallant. However Houstan has a problem with navigation. Can anyone explain what I have done wrong.

@Wise_Grimwald While I'm certainly no expert on mods, I noticed the Drizzt Saga claims it installed the BP-BGT World map version of itself, claims it requires the BP-BGT world map - except I don't see BP-BGT world map having been installed yet? In addition, I notice BG:EE only mods, which isn't BGT. You can't be both BGT and EE can you?
I used BWS which seemed happy with my choices. If this is the only problem with my set-up, I can live with it, but it would be good to know what I did wrong so that I don't repeat the error.
There are some choices that I wouldn't have made such as heavy armour reducing dex, but that is something else that I can live with.
Having installed those choices, I think that it will be back to core setting for me. I had been playing on hard, but I think that Might be a little too tough with SCS improved battles installed.
My Gallant Fighter Osweald Twinaxe has just travelled north of the FAI.
@Grond0 I sort of understood your logic in a neutral character killing both good and evil. From that logic, how is it that a good character kills Imoen?
There's a different logic there, i.e. a perfectly reasonable response to being pestered (otherwise known as the Noober effect).
Looking at your map I'm not surprised that the FAI is considered unreachable - do they make boats in Candlekeep? .
Well that game was short and not so sweet. Tenya cast Rigid Thinking which didn't turn out too badly as Osweald ran out of sight whilst Tenya cast a spell to improve her extremely low strength. Osweald took a nap before returning. This time he was "Held." Nuff said. RIP. Glad that I decided on the core setting.

Success.
notfireball thyneighbourself.
For all we know, Prat and his gang could be just around the corner but that's something to worry about (incinerate) next time
Stats
Teere has 50 kills.
Corarcher has 130 kills.
Mis is extending her lead, 241 kills.
Main (Halfling Swashbuckler, Grond0); Ooisae (Half-orc Cleric of Talos, Gate70)
Main, swashbuckler 7, 48 HPs, 68 kills
Ooisae, cleric of Talos 6, 48 HPs, 69 kills
If IA does not come out soon I will just start some test runs with the old (current) version. I do dislike the v1.3 patch though... Anyway, soon some posts.
It takes me like 60 hours to finish BG1. (I also auto-pause any time one of my party members so much as sneezes.)
What is the current going rate on finishing BG1? I s'pse the clever peoples can speedrun the thing in a mere lunch break these days?
What do you do then? Sirens & Basilisks?
How do you resist the temptation of furious anger against Firewine Kobolds?
Don't you do Durlag?
Where is the fun in not dying to a straight bandit arrow?
It's pretty rare that Shoal doesn't kick the bucket early on. Things done after that are much more variable, but the basilisks are often the next main target and the sirines also look like an easy early source of XP for most combinations (assuming we have either a thief or someone with 18+ strength to get the potion of clarity).
It's quite a while since we've done that. Partly that relates to the trap issue again, but also to the fact we don't need the XP or treasure ...
Occasionally, I do permit myself to start in BG2.
When my OCD does not permit it though, it is the slow endless slog through BG1, I'm afraid.

A normal run, 10 hours not clearing everything or indeed 60 hours clearing all fights and things.
I can try a speedrun bg1 again. Should be fun noreload.
@Grond0 you live life on the edge

I'm pretty sure this time can be beaten with a bit more optimization. I think it's nice to see someone do that, but yeah, the BG speedrunning seems pretty quiet, if not non existent.
Main (Halfling Swashbuckler, Grond0); Ooisae (Half-orc Cleric of Talos, Gate70)
In her first hour, she's:
- learnt the identify scroll from Tethtoril (actually I had to restart 3 times to succeed with that, but as it's the only spell Wimp can safely make use of I thought it justified getting her off to a guaranteed good start).

Looking at your map I'm not surprised that the FAI is considered unreachable - do they make boats in Candlekeep? .
