@Shandyr, sorry you had a bad experience on the Obsidian forum, love.
@everyone, I'm sorry I brought everybody's mood down on this thread with my moanin' and bitchin'.
Inspired by Bobby M. and Robin Williams, as of tonight, I am going to start trying to bring people up instead of down as my life philosophy! It's not easy to do, but I have forgotten somewhere along the way that that's how I really would like to be.
Long live Project Eternity! I hope they manage to give us all the best rpg we've seen in a decade, worthy of a new "golden" age of rpg's.
Isn't that what they call store where you get your asshat? ;-)
No, that's an asshaberdashery. An asshattery is more like an asshat boutique.
Haha well Urban Dictionary has some amusing definitions too, my favourite of which is:
Asshattery;
1. The act of displaying properties or characteristics of an asshat. This includes but is not limited to wearing your ass for a hat or saying/commiting an act that causes the audience in presence to become dumber.
2. The art of becoming or practicing flagrantly being an asshat.
I think your definition puts a nice new spin on it though
Let us not forget that April 2014 is but a target date. In no way is Obsidian forced to deliver by that date: This is Kickstarter, not some publisher who only cares about cash and doesn't give a damn about product quality.
I agree, but I don't think 18 months is a realistic target, even if they are not developing a new engine from scratch. Unless they dedicate a big team to do the development. Graphics and sound alone can take over an entire year to be ready, depending on the development path they choose. And we have to consider writing scripts, transcribing it to the game, coding and beta testing before release as well.
And they are creating their RPG rules from scratch and that also requires testing.
On the other hand, don't forget that they did receive 4 million... and they do not have crazy expenses for shareholders, for execs or for marketing. They do not have to waste time to go over someone's guidelines and go back and re-do when the execs decide that it won't make enough profit, and they do not have to limit themselves to make sure that it fits in certain marketing guidelines for maximum profit.
I believe they will also have an easier time working on this game, and they will ENJOY working on it with no one breathing down their neck to make sure that it fits the perfect formula.
Plus Obsidian is known for being creative. And like others said, April 2014 is only an estimate. if they need more time, no one can force them to release an unfinished game.
I see them the same way I see Runic and Torchlight 2. Not sure if a lot of people are familiar with them, but some of them originally created Diablo and made their own studio after not being happy with where Blizzard was going. They've took time creating Torchlight 2, had a lot of people get angry or annoyed at the game being delayed by a bit... they still took time to finish it and test it out... and the result? They've received some of the best reviews I've ever seen a game get, while Diablo 3 became the butt of all jokes. I'm sure Obsidian will be able to do the same and take the time that's necessary for them to do it.
Oh I don't think it's bad for them to delay the game, I just think their first estimated date is too optimistic. Two years is not a long development cycle at all
I would guess that April 2014 was their target before they realized that they were going to have the resources to spend more time on it. I wouldn't be surprised to see that target moved a bit.
When they already have engine, showing us some kind of screenshot already, I think April 2014 isn´t that much optimistic. As mentioned, they are going to have smooth development without publishers, they have resources. Didn´t BG2 or PS:T took the same time to develop after all?

I don't know seems like I saw an interview recently (since kickstarter finished I think) where one of the devs was specifically asked about the 4/14 date and he said he thought it was realistic that they had spent some time and effort planning the stretch goals and based on the people and resources they would be able to assign that at this point he didn't see it as unrealistic. (or words to that effect LOL).
Can't recall which dev or who was interviewing him tho - memory chips get a little unstable at 64 you know - I can recall what I was doing at 5 years old but not why I walked across the room ... ;-)

Probably to look after where you left your glasses...
You know, the ones resting neatly on your receeding hairline..
Oops, sorry, I was projecting there for a moment... ;-)
@Shandyr, sung to the tune of Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy"
"In every life, there comes some trouble, but when you worry you make it double! Don't worry. Be happy!
The landlord say your rent is late...he may have to litigate! Don't worry. Be Happy!
The game you want, has been delayed...you're so bored, all the games already played! Don't worry. Be Happy!
"I'm not worried I'm happy! Wooooooooo...woo, woo, woo, woo....woh, wuwoh, wuwoh, wuwoh.... Don't worry !... Woh, wuwoh, wuwoh, wuwohhhhh! Be happy! Woh, wuwoh, wuwohhhhh! Don't worry, be happy!"
Sorry, I guess that's the best I can do. Fortunately for me, I can replay my favorites over and over in a cycle, and if I get a new one to add to the cycle, then I'm really happy, but if not, I still have my cycle, and lots and lots of entertainment, and I can not worry, and be happy.
Might and Magic 6-8, Baldur's Gate, SoA, ToB, Neverwinter Nights, SoU, HotU, mods, Neverwinter Nights 2, MotB, SoZ, then the action hack'n'slash, Sacred, Sacred2, Titan Quest, Torchlight, Torchlight 2, and by then, I'm ready to go back to Might and Magic 6-8, and I will have forgotten enough for it to be fresh again.
If I get into the mood for a little turn-based strategy, I can rotate Heroes of Might and Magic 1-5 into the cycle.
I swear, I have so many great games to play over and over, I am already going to die a happy man. If some producer somewhere manages to add a new great game to my cycle, it will be a bonus, and I will say even more prayers of gratitude that I live in the Age of Wonders where I can live in my imagination like I want to.
@Shandyr, wow, thanks for posting that! I may go over and give them a twenty dollar bill, just because.
After all, I already gave the BG:EE team twenty bucks, and they're not even giving me video updates about what they're doing. (Which is not to disparage their efforts - they've chosen to tackle some legal monoliths that the Eternity team seems to be trying to avoid.)
And these guys are actually playing D&D sessions together based on the game they're trying to build? Wow.
What's the guy's name in the video? I definitely want to start doing some research of my own about Project:Eternity. They certainly seem to be doing everything right and to have their hearts in the right place.
EDIT: The best counterargument to convince me that I'm wrong would be to cite a case of a game that has been developed from Kickstarter that is a good game, and that I should buy to play NOW.
As soon as I learned about Obsidian's new project, it was pretty much already sold to me. I trust in their ability to create an awesome new RPG. Most of what they have shown of their work on it so far looks pretty good, too. The only thing I'm not sure what to think of is the idea of not including healing spells.

It was 4th or 5th most sold game on steam after release IIRC, and is an awesome little game.
YES! That is a great little game! I love it! I am having a bitch of a time unlocking all the ships though.
One of the things that excites me most about Project Eternity is that there will be a boxed version.
One of the things that worries me the most is that I'm not sure my computer will be able to handle it. You never know though, by the time it comes out I may need to upgrade anyway...
I'm looking forward to this game more than any other game that was announced in recent years.
The people working on in are some of the greatest names in gaming. Obsidian is more or less made up of the staff from Black Isle and while their games are often buggy as hell, they tend to be amazing products.
KOTOR had my favorite NPC in gaming history (Kriea), NWN2 was better than the first, and Fallout: New Vegas... Well, NV was one of the few modern RPGs where I felt I had choice. Hell, I felt I had more choice in it than I did ~classic~ games.
