The stream is off, the game runs way too unstable to properly stream :/

Well, and @Erg's was worried about lack of modding support. The beta won't run form me at all and they're just telling me that it's Unity stuff won't get along with my laptop and the same thing MAY happen with Wasteland 2 e.g.

    It's beyond annoying.
  • ButtercheeseButtercheese Member Posts: 3,766
Yeah, the game crashed for me over twenty times by now, I gave up.
Impressive enough, that I actually made it out of character creation. But as soon as I want to save it freezes again :I

Been trying to find out where the game saves the crash reports so that I can report the bugs, but wonder oh wonder, I can't find it :I

    Frustration :D

Don't know 'bout you but this post is REALLY disturbing.

I backed both PoE and ToN with a lot of money and if there is a suggestion that it's Unity thing and I need to buy a new drive, install only Windows and the drivers on it and only THEN I'll be able to play these games, then WTH?
  • scriverscriver Member Posts: 2,072
Well. Buying the game before there's specs for it pretty much mean you're buying it without knowing if you can run it. I understand that's a shitty situation to end up in, but yeah. I thought of making a comparison to having a too old/low spec computer,or a laptop with those integrated graphic cards, but I'm not 100% grasping what problem is the cause of these crashes so I'm not really sure how good a comparison that would be.

Sucks that you can't run it, though. I hope they or unity is able to solve it somehow.

Well, I do have few year's old laptop, but been able to comfortably play such games as Witcher 2, Mass Effect 2, Diablo 3 and few more. I don't think PoE's requirements will be that high.

I'll try to find end install newest graphic card drivers and see if it helps.

Well ... it's a beta. Being able to play one game on your laptop does not mean you can play another on the same system just as comfortably. I tried to review the crash log but I have to be a member of their forum to do so, or I'd give you some suggestions. Maybe you could attach it here?

An example is BG:EE, running on Windows XP. During the release, I and some other users could not download via the BeamDog application or through their store. It always returned with an error. What it came down to reviewing the logs, and BeamDog creating a tiny app to report more detail, we came to learn it was Windows XP SSL Certificate not being updated on our system.

This is because Windows stopped including it with the Windows XP updates, and it was a manual download the user had to take care of. My end had very old SSL Certificates, but once updated, the issue was resolved. I'm unaware if BeamDog bundled that into their download app or not.

Some other good examples are old .NET files on one's system, old versions of DirectX or classic OpenGL.dll issues for games like BG:EE or NWN when it comes to old drivers or required third party applications to run.

Additionally, many laptops don't come with a real graphic card. They're integrated. Low memory, poor output, and high intensity games which may require proper shader support or rendering, may not be able to handle the demand. Without proper on-board graphic memory support to display high in-game features, it gets dumped into memory, which can cause crashes.

Communicating with Obsidian with your crash logs is also the best way to assure they can pinpoint these crashes, and also prepare the minimum specs for running the game.

I do hope you're able to play it when it's out of the beta, because it looks like a game worth investing in.

@Sylvus_Moonbow thanks for your offer to help. Attaching crash dump files. If anyone willing to take a look and see if can figure out what's up I'll be obliged.

I installed newest drivers, trying to find offending font as suggested here, but didn't see UNLC.ttf. Unfortunately I can't crack the error logs:(

Sorry, forgot to attach crash dump.

Well, I looked it over and without much else to go on, my guess, and that's all it is, is that PoE could be using an XML file structure like NWN2 did and something is borked, or some sort of SQL driven database like Dragon Age used.

That's what I guess from seeing "stringtable" errors.

It's also worth pointing out that the directory structure in the log is incorrect. Whether it's the log reporting that is wrong, or the way the directory is parsed, I don't know.

"Failed to load D:/Gry/SteamLibrary/Pillars of Eternity Beta/steamapps/common/Pillars of Eternity - Public Beta/PillarsOfEternity_Data\data_backerbeta/localized/en/text/game/gui.stringtable."

Check out the backslash / forward slash difference.

"Pillars of Eternity - Public Beta/PillarsOfEternity_Data\"

Again, I could be totally off too and it's just a Steam related issue?

I'm sorry I couldn't be much more help, as it doesn't move you any closer to playing the game.

@Sylvus_Moonbow‌ thanks for taking the trouble with deciphering the log. I was wondering myself, if it's not Steam related (I hate Steam seriously) but the game actualy runs, I am able to go to Main Menu and Options, only when I choose New Game it crashes to my face.
Well I guess I need to wait for devs to fix it.

It's not really as fun as I thought it would be. Too many game-breaking bugs to enjoy it yet.

Sounds like I didn't miss anything not going for the beta.

Yeah. Ive stopped all kinds of pre realease buys or beta build tryouts. Better to wait for the finished product - I dont want to ruin the experience.

    Single player only.
Is it actually running smoothly for any of you guys? I'm excited anyways, and they still have up to maybe 4 months to work on it I suppose..

To me, a beta can serve as an eternal character generator, for e.g:

The whole thing is running relatively smoothly for me. There's a number of known issues (all of which I've experienced) such as a bug which can cause things to disappear from inventory, quests in journal being erased and causing the completion of these quests to subsequently give no XP, pathfinding issues, and auto-attack issues. It's a beta, I didn't back at the level I did specifically for beta access, but I decided to check it out since it doesn't spoil the main storyline. It's buggy, as I think would be expected, and I'm sure most of these known issues will be dealt with in an update soon.

The world is beautiful and vibrant in my opinion, the look and feel is reminiscent of the IE games, the writing and lore is great, overall I'm very pleased with it.

The combat seemed a bit hectic to me at first, but I think that once they add in further ways to distinguish between characters, as well as making the characters more distinguishable from the terrain (I think they went a little too far in blending the 3d models in with the backgrounds), the chaotic feel will be gone. Also just jumping straight into a game with a 5-member level 5-6 party means that there's a lot to learn and a lot of abilities and spells to understand. Even with the occasional frustration of it being hectic, the combat is a lot of fun and is pretty challenging which is nice. All the classes have the potential to have plenty of activated abilities (some are per-rest, some per-encounter) which allows for more involved warrior classes for those interested in such things. Supposedly plenty of passive options will be available as well for those that don't want to micromanage their warriors, I haven't really tested out making any warrior classes yet so I can't say for sure, but the pre-made Fighter NPC is pretty low maintenance, though not as low maintenance as a level 5 fighter in BG.

At the moment resting is available either at inns or in the wilderness, but camping in the wilderness requires camping supplies, which are limited. Resting at inns gives option for wildly different rooms ranging from dirt cheap to quite expensive for the nicest room, which will give your party buffs to a couple of stats until the next time they rest. I like the system so far.

To the dismay of some, there is no per-kill XP awarded. The XP system is based around completing quests and XP is awarded at the completion of a quest and at specified points in the progression of a quest. I'm hoping that they make sure to expand this to compensate for players that explore things in unintended ways, such as finding and convincing an ogre to leave the area before receiving the quest to do so. I'm not really sure how it's intended and how comprehensive it will end up being as this is early days we're in and it's particularly difficult to tell with the journal bug. Either way, I don't miss the combat XP at all, and although I would prefer a comprehensive objective-based XP system (which would reward a player for completing an objective -- such as exploring a wilderness area or a ruin, clearing a well travelled road of dangerous beasts, dealing with a dragon that's plaguing a population, or resolving a conflict between two communities -- regardless of how the objective is completed) to a strictly quest XP system, I don't mind it and I figure it'll be more than satisfactory once the bugs are worked out.

Those are my first impressions, I'm looking forward to Obsidian working out the kinks throughout the beta process and I have high hopes for the final release.

If anyone is interested in watching some videos, there is a gameplay series on Youtube I've followed. I picked this particular one because Subtowner's voice is pleasing to my ears, and he talks a lot about the game mechanics and takes the time to show the viewer the game, and what is and how the game works.

My only gripe is that he swears now and again with an F*bomb, Sh!t or Sons of B!tches. Thankfully it's only in combat when things get hairy xD

I'm not a beta participant so went to Youtube to share someone else's experiences, this is the series I'm following too. I second the recommendation! ;)

Also, I'm curious what everyone's impressions of the game are? Things are a little...passionate...over on their forum, so I thought I'd ask here. :)
