What I'd perso like to see from UK in Eurovision is shameless, bold EDM-number. London is traditional club-capital, and has given rise to so many techno genres - even if gentrification of London is decimating the clubs something fierce.

For something soft, for example "Latch" from Disclosure would be what I'm thinking about (caught them by coincidence in Flow festival few years back, was there for Kraftwerk). Other option would be to do something seemingly extreme (um... Lordi anyone) and go with a "hard" style like dub-step with aggressive drops. Maybe style Knife Party - Fire Hive (it's still melodic). It would be interesting debate if "sequencing" counts for a "live performance" don't u think?

Anyways, let's see what gives! Need to beatify my appt a bit now since as a true believer hosting duties natrually fall on me.

    It really is :)

This year's been a strange one. Leicester win the BPL and Australia win the ESC and they're not even a European country. Nothing wrong with the song, I quiet like it. Hehe
  • sparkleavsparkleav Member Posts: 871
That would be a strange outcome... They'd have to host it in the afternoon if they won.

What is the point? I don't know why we enter.

So, last year I agreed with the televote and the juries' favorite won. This year I agreed with the juries and the televoters' favorite won. Ah well...

Because unfortunately they did not pull "belgiums" - I really wanted them to, but like Frans of host nation, their vocals sounded really rather quiet, underwhelming. (IMO) And on tops they had double earphones, to purportedly help them get on with it - which I noted majority of performers had.

Globen might be tricky for an arena, but still Belgium and France pulled major stage presence, and as my non-Euro friend said: if only UK had Georgian vocals, where Georgia was the more convincing indie rock act and UK had the better song.

Australia btw would not be hosting even if they won- the logistics, the time difference, ESC being a competition hosted by "European Broadcasting Union." I'm guessing Sweden would have had to do it again if Australia really won - which would be silly. I am fine with them having been a jubilee act, or a mid-time act as of now, but I am reduced to thinking that Ukraine is at least an authentic winner.

I'd rather see some diplomacy done to convince North-Africa and Lebanon join proper. Belgium scored pretty well, though. And HU scored a nice hockey victory, too...
  • TStaelTStael Member Posts: 861
But let's be good sport: congrats to Ukraine! As a Finn the stark message of this song was not lost to me, and the singer really lived this song. Look fwd to ESC '17 in Kiev plausibly.

@sparkleav Alprighty - it'll be your proud duty to write to BBC to team up with Ministry of Sound or UKF or such like. I sincerely think this could unite electro-fans like Lordi united rock fans.

But...I'm digesting that FI was fourth to the last, I thought that was a bit cruel... sigh... Seems Finnish social media went especially crazy over Amir of France (I approve) and Ian McKellen (I approve as well).

All in all, the top ten was actually less painful to me than usual.

I only don't get what Frans is doing at spot number five - I hardly heard his vocals! Bulgaria at number four is a particularly lovely surprise - this was one performance that won me over in the final that I had overlooked. Even if I took exception to RU stage persona, I believe he was genuinely very popular and my objection to AU is that they would not be hosting anyway.

I also like that Poli Genova broke "look at my amazing hair and my sexy outfit" stereotype of women performers that I admit to having about East European contestants. My friend actually very pertinently noted that the poor gal from Azerbaijan looked uncomfy and self-conscious on stage because of her ridiculous sex-kitten jumpsuit, whereas her intro-video pointed out to a natural person. Well, Armenia with mounted to a blingy swimsuit took home those votes...

Thank goodness for hockey at least after this crushing vote count. But I think this was a good year overall! It only lacked a proper eccentric act...

After the show my favorite was Australia. Runner-ups are Serbia, F.Y.R. Macedonia (how could "Dona" miss the final?), Cyprus and Bulgaria, with Russia close behind.

My pre-show favorites that let me down a bit were Italy and the Czech Republic.

My nominees for the Barbara Dex Award are Switzerland and Armenia.

And @TStael, I'm sorry to say this but Denmark came second-last in our semifinal. Which means we have even more than Finland to make up for. And it looks a lot like Teams Denmark and Finland are going to face each other in the quarter-final...
  • TStaelTStael Member Posts: 861
@Montresor_SP That would certainly be most welcome - even if Sweden is not doing a lot to help this result at the moment... I'd love to see both DK and DE in the second phase, the latter also pulling a very inspired upset today!

Hmm... Dex award is a tough one. I love our southern neighbours, but I fear it would be Estonia even if the song was not musically the worst. The guy came across as devious and malicious manipulator, with his beckoning, even if it surely was a calculated provocation. But agree on Armenia - that was lung power demonstration with very little melody. And a total case of "look at my beautiful hair and sexy outfit." (IMO)

@Montresor_SP DK second time in end phase of hockey in history- congrats! Very pleased.

Oh, how very nerve-wrecking finding out if it'll be FI against you - one of my occasionally pacing away from telly matches, which is a bit silly of course...

Edit: 3-0 at end of second period... Wow... Unless we totally melt in the last one, I shall have been able to return to the couch, and DK it is!!

Really nasty trick from Perry on Laine, though, so Canada deserves to lose IMO. Hopefully bad. Jokinen is my favourite player, so I am not even into this Laine hysteria, but damaging others to put them "into their place" should have zero place in sports!

NB: situation took place when Perry was skating back to the bench, it was not even "in game" situation. I am pleased FI did not stoop as low in retaliation - rather, played and scored.

Yeah, @Montresor_SP - FI & DK it is!

We'll take as given that both of us want ours to win, but to me difference is that in case FI loses, I'll get over it sooner, because I really would rejoice DK breaking through in hockey. With Germany, I think it will, next.

    @FinneousPJ - this one you'll watch, right?

@lolien - I'm crushed. I really expected a different outcome. But bouncing back soon, this experience will stack up, I really think!

Edit: maybe it balances out for HU having done the best out of us on voting in ESC semi finals... But I'd dearly loved HU to have all of it!

@TStael First 10 minutes seemed horrible. After that though it was better and better and of course team FI was not unlucky as well ;) Of course I will watch the deciding games.

For 2017 shall we start out joined hockey & ESC thread all at once?

Just not enough volume of fans for numerous threads, I feel - but rare and true love is worth having, is it not?

Therefore I take the liberty of posting the following video focusing on hockey - which myself I only discovered yesterday, and laughed out loud with tears in my eyes. And then thinking... should I enjoy a national stereotype that much, as a Finn?

    I did.

This is for you @Montresor_SP @lolien @FinneousPJ - and @sparkleav as our mate.

It's not that assistant coach Nurminen is drunk, and falls. Not at all! That's okei after hockey WC.

Only - how on earth does he manage to fall straight upon the World Championships' trophy??

I like his style, sorry! (the sound is ref to "Lacrosse scoop", or "ilmaveivi" by Granlund decisive goal to win Finns Bratislava WC - happy to translate further if anyone I is interested. "Herregud, vad gjorde han?"

Lol, Finneous, that is not good enough, buhhahaa! ;-) I already freely admitted I am a terrible case of triple footie-hockey-ESC fan. (Orsino late game spoiler for a playful hyperbole and all that...)

I frankly expected you to admit to watching harder, and with greater pleasure, because this is Denmark, and this is rare. And DK should come to top eight soon, if this was our wish. Right? :-)

But I hope you approve...

There's no 'lol' option under your post otherwise I would most definitely have selected that. Looked like he dived into the cup hehe. Thank you @TStael I really needed something to make me laugh :D

Also I am quite surprised by the Canadians' unsportsmanlike, horrible attitude. Intentionally trying to harm other players outside a game situation should be punished after the game. @elminster how do you plead?

Truly hope it's casual, the need that is. :-) It feels a little cheap lol'ing with tears on your own national cliché, but many probably have won the trophy - only very few have publicly fallen upon it... So let us enjoy our imperfections, eh?

Indeed. But unlike Pihlström whom I very severely disapproved against Germany - proper or dirty tackle, lateral stick as follow up is not ok - the Finnish team won on not stooping as low. I always expect this of Finland - proper sporting attitude.

Nice it won tonite, no? :-)

I could not avoid it, I laughed quite hard - but I admit, this is high-low humour like Russell Howard. I frankly hate exploitative "drunkenness" coverage by media - but when one can boast to falling upon a WC trophy, it becomes quite bad-ass.

Happy you enjoyed it, as I did!

Nothing. But it is being realistic and economical.

Eurovision and Hockey World Championships are niche loves, but that love is strong. 2017, I've suggested we go all in upon title creation - ESC & Hockey WC thread. :-p

Edit: which does not detract from Perry having been cheap and despicable. Or?

I understand what you say sparkleav - but I also hope you feel when I say: Denmark moving forth to final stage is not a matter of generic thread, to me - that joy should be deep.

I actually noted Southampton last season and hoped, and when Leicester was at the top at Xmas break I hoped some more. Such things get praise easy - Denmark hockey not.
