I am completely stumped.
The AI components of my SCS install inexplicably uninstalled themselves a few days ago and I have been unable to reinstall them. I tried to uninstall the mods, but the WeiDu installer got stuck. It went on for two hours without stopping.
Then I uninstalled the game via Steam (the "Delete Local Content" option), reinstalled it, and then uninstalled all of my mods. That time, uninstalling the mods worked. But when I tried to reinstall the mods, SCS' General AI component, the single most important one, fails to install.

Out of curiosity, I let the application try to finish installing the existing mods. Four hours later, it was still running. I finally x'ed it out.
In my experience, the only way to fix this is to start up a completely new installation of the game, a clean install. So I uninstalled the game, renamed my BG2 directory to get it out of the way, and then reinstalled the game via Steam. I then copied the original .zip files for all the mods I wanted to install into my new BG2 directory. I didn't copy any other files, just to be sure that this was a clean install.
I started installing the BG2 fixpack. It got stuck on the first component, saying there was no GORPEL.DLG in my CHITIN key. The exact same message when I failed to install that component on my previous game, which I already installed and had all its files isolated in a separate folder.

That's all there is. And the override folder is empty. Zero mods. Zero mod-introduced files. Zero custom files. Absolutely nothing is there. Everything is in a separate folder. As far as I can tell, my install is perfectly clean. And it still fails.
I even reinstalled the game again and this time used the Strategems .bat file to uninstall it. It still fails.
Does anybody--anybody--have any idea what could have gone wrong, or how I might be able to get a real, real, actually clean, clean install, just to start completely from scratch? Because if I can't play with the only mod that adds any real challenge to the game anymore, I see no point in playing BG2.
I uninstalled BG2, deleted the directory, and reinstalled it. Now there is literally nothing in my directory but the files from Steam. I ran the BG2 fixpack again.

@BelgarathMTH: No recent updates. I don't think anything is stopping SCS from altering the right files; it says the GORPEL dialogue isn't even in the CHITIN key.
My only remaining theory is that Steam has a broken CHITIN key, stored online somewhere, that it installs in every directory. If that's true, I need to find that file. If that's the problem and I can't do that, my game is broken beyond repair.
Something has got to have changed if everything was fine, and then suddenly it wasn't. A driver change, an update, something new you installed, an outdated version of SCS vis a vis Windows updates, a virus got onto your computer, *something* must be different.
I know how frustrating it is to play Sherlock Holmes with these kinds of computer mysteries. I hope you find your solution soon. It just *can't* be permanently broken. There's *got* to be a solution.
You say you've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling? What about the vestiges of uninstalls that Windows often leaves in either the document folder or in the registry entries?
Perhaps cleaning out your registry would help?
Also, perhaps start a topic for this in off-topic, to avoid too much off-topic in this no-reload thread? I bet we have some tech wizards around here who can come up with a solution.
