Looks like I goofed on being a Red Wizard right off the bat. Already re-rolled and working on an appropriate wizard now. Thanks for the link, I didn't realize I was missing the other threads as I had not made a forum account. I'd be all buggered out about having to re-roll, but then I realized that if there was a game out there that was just to roll D&D characters and play through level one over and over I'd be content haha.
If you decide to discard an old character and start a new one, you can delete the old character and transfer 50% of its experiece points to the new one as long as the new character has less than 100 total xp.
Wizard is one of the most challenging classes to play solo.
NO way..... I wish I knew that... He's sitting at level five 100% to level 6... waiting for the DM to accept my application so I can continue on leveling as a RW.
And yeah, i've found that out the hard way... luckily all i've ever played in dnd/BG was a wizard or sorc, so i'm able to get around... I just can't grind on mobs as much as others can non stop, gotta take a rest often. But since I've gotten the Dire Wolf Summon, he literally walks through dungeons with his 25 str nearly one-shotting everything.
Btw, @yathrin@scriver ..... ((Who are you guys playing as most of the time? We ought to RP our way into knowing each other! I was Renulan at first, a level 7 sorc... and the guy I rerolled to is the level 6 Red wizard, his name is Meleketh.
I've seen that name around. My current characters is a soon-to-be lvl6 halfling rouge called Ebennos Galanderee and a lvl11 Cleric/Fighter/Warpriest called Boleslaus Branimir. I also have a halfling rajger and a Duergar rogue, but those two are practically put on hold now.
I also usually play during the European evening and/or quite often during the day, so you've probably seen me around.
That was over two years ago. After a quick search, I don't even think that DM is still active. Not that I see how punishing people who break the rules would be childish and power-abuse, even if Unstable was being an arsehole while doing it.
That's one of the potential negative things about multiplayer in NWN and NWN 2. The incident in the video was quite extreme but such stuff does happen occasionally in NWN. Many worlds have a set of rules and DMs need to reinforce them and punish people if necessary. Since playing NWN and NWN 2 in multiplayer is completely free, there is no commercial pressure on them.
However, quite many worlds have mature and responsible administrators and DMs. They maintain their worlds in a professional manner and some of them cherish players and provide "customer support" which is even better than in commercial MMORPGs. I have played NWN and NWN 2 in multiplayer for nine years so far in at least 10-15 different worlds and I have experienced somewhat unfair treatment from DMs only a few times and only on two or three worlds.
What I've really liked about NWN multiplayer is that core gameplay can be exactly same as in big MMORPG games but community is small and developers and DMs can listen to dedicated players and create individualized content for them. For example, I had a vampire guild once for 3-4 years and one developer/DM created a secret vampire lair for us in the spirit of Bodhi's Tomb in Baldur's Gate 2. There were also 3-4 DMs who role-played a vampire king who ruled over one big city in the world. The king would grant us audience sometimes and we served as his agents, doing his missions and quests or gathering information for him.
I saw Meleketh once and I partied with Ebennos Galanderee a few days ago at the Cloakwood Forest. Unfortunately, our lizard hunt didn't go too well. My most recent character is Regana, a level 4 wizard. It's really hard playing alone as a wizard, so partying would be nice.
Eh, that DM doesn't even play anymore... Since I've been on every single DM i've talked to and interacted with have been MORE than generous with our interactions... I don't know if that's because i'm polite or not.. but that guy seemed to have an attitude... maybe its the language barrier that makes it seem so, anyways...
@yathrin Yeah! keep an eye out for me when you're on and we can go slay a few kobolds ((finally got accepted into RW last night... the class and guild is AWESOME!
It looks pretty good, especially since there appears to have been a campaign to make the Dungeon Master team more professional. There's a page dedicated to this on the wiki. There is also a lot of new content that I don't remember being in the default NWN2.
In fact, this online world reminds me of the Temple of Elemental Evil with the Circle of 8 fix-pack. It has Counterspelling and all kinds of other neat feats. They even have real custom made languages characters can learn and speak, like Drow, Elven and Dwarven. :O
Definitly check out the wiki if you're interested. That Texture upgrade and Client upgrade sound like good ideas.
I'm going to pick this up as my multiplayer BG fix, BG Enhanced will be my singleplayer fix!
LOL, the monsters and NPCs you are fighting in this Persistent World can talk! They actually comment on your character when they see you, or when you hit them. One even said I was a coward when I ran away from him because he was too strong!
At first I thought they were DM controlled, but it turns out there's some kind of "enhancement'' script running that makes them come up with it. Freaky witty AI.
Definitly the best NWN2 server I've seen since I got the game in 2008. 'Talking' monsters is a huge accomplishment, for any game!! I can't even think of any commercial game that has that!
I hope BG Enhanced gets monsters that talk and express anger / pain when they get hit too. Other than the sound you get when you score a critical hit. I remember the original BG having this to a limited extent.
Haha, yeah it's a cool little feature, once you get out of the areas near the gate, monsters depending on what they are start to speak in different languages, too. So if you have the knowledge of that language from your race, or are a mage and its one of your 4 known languages you can understand them.. otherwise they just spout gibberish at you.
Monster speech is a funny feature indeed, though it might exist in some MMORPGs too, I guess. The most witty monsters in BGTSCC are the imps which live in one of the most dangerous epic level zones in the Underdark. When you fight them, they sometimes say stuff like "If I tricked you and you tricked me into believing that I tricked you, then who tricked whom?"
One feature which I really haven't seen in any MMORPGs are languages. In BGTSCC they have the language tool and you need to pick a certain number of languages you know which is based on the intelligence modifier. Nowadays there are also a few new spells like Comprehend Tongues.
The feature related to communication which impressed me most is the RP XP algorithm which can somehow analyze words and sentence structures and which is quite well protected against abuse by spamming or other means, giving role-playing xp only during conversations between player characters and mostly for versatile and elaborate fantasy-related sentences. I still haven't quite figured out exactly what conditions trigger the acquirement of RP XP during conversations with other players. During my first week in BGTSCC I thought DMs were listening in invisibility mode and giving XP but eventually I realized that it is an automated process.
By the way, if NWN 2 is the same as NWN 1, DMs can see all communication that happens in party chat channels but not personal tells sent from one player to another player (in green text) or communication taking place using "tells" unless DM is near the characters who are talking. I used to be a DM in NWN 1 for a while on one server and there was usually quite a lot of spam going on because of all the player talk on party chat channels.
When you choose a god for a cleric character, you must make sure that the two cleric domains you choose match the portfolio of your god or otherwise cleric spells will fizzle. For example, a cleric worshiping Lolth can choose only between Chaos, Darkness, Destruction, Evil or Trickery. Fortunately, there are over 100 deities to choose from and there are 4-5 domains to choose from for each of them.
Here is a tip concerning specialized wizards. All schools of magic contain at least one or two very nice spells for routine monster hunting. If you specialize in one school, you will loose access to another school. However, a specialist wizard gets one additional spell slot per spell level, which is a very nice bonus.
Here is a list of schools which can be prohibited and some essential spells from each school.
Not really, www.nwn2db.com is actually useful, a place where you can experiment rather than just reading others peoples usually substandard build plans.

NWN2DB could be better for some new players but at least for really old NWN 1/NWN 2 veterans who already know a lot of things by heart I'd recommend building on blank paper or a new text file and using NWN1Wiki and NWN2Wiki.
For example, NWN2DB mentions only that "a successful death attack forces the victim to make a Fortitude save or become paralyzed".
NWN2Wiki, on the other hand, also doesn't forget to mention that the DC of assassin's death attack equals 10 + 1/Assassin's Level + 1/Int Mod and that in standard NWN 2 settings it "does not count as a sneak attack to qualify for the Arcane Trickster class".
Hey Yathrin so I got the nwn2 game and what not so I was wondering how exactly you join the bgtscc servers? I found one and downloaded the goods but it's full. Are there any more empty servers to play on or is that just it? Lol I'm dying to try my drow necromancer in this world man...
@xlegionx You just have to keep trying, hit refresh until its 69/70.. seems weekends fill up but normally only takes me a few minutes at most if I catch the server full capacity.
I assume this thread is pulling in a lot of new people.
@Yathrin I've been building NWN2 builds for years, the wiki is often wrong and is usually so because people are misinformed about how things work. The Death Attack DC you mention is all pulled directly from the .2da files, so it what is supplied in game. I use the builder to plan out builds level by level and the wiki to supplement any gaps in my knowledge.
Veteran NWN1 builders tend to struggle as there any quite a few subtle yet telling differences between the two systems. Especially if they've planned it out on paper and then tried to implement it in game without validating it first.
I've never had any issues with Death Attack not factoring in for other SA dependent pre-reqs (though in truth I haven't played vanilla NWN2 for some time now). It is known that Death Attack on it's own doesn't fire the 'sneak attack' tags, but is still actually factored into damage.
I wish they could afford to maintain a second server and run BGTSCC on two servers, raising the maximum number of players online from 70 to 140 and expanding the game world. Maybe that could even happen if there was a great increase in the popularity of BGTSCC and a rise in donations.
I have been playing on the server over the past weekend. Up till then - I hadnt even played online with NWN2 (but I did burn hundreds of hours online with NWN1). The world has been well constructed and there are plenty of things for new characters to do to get them at least to level 2 without leaving the city. I just wish I had better internet service as sometimes I have to log out due to lag.
My sneaky character is fun to play, the world is fairly challenging so its never boring. Consumables help a lot and I supect thats by design, which is good. Parties are always to be found since there's fairly many players.
Am I the only person who absolutely can't stand the NWN engine? It isnt Baldurs Gate if it isnt using the superior Infinity engine, period.
The NWN engine is hands down the most frustrating, user unfriendly and awkward 3D engine I have ever had to play, everything about it felt terrible to me.

That this particular server also has a wiki and getting started page for those of us interested:

Enchantment: Heroism, Greater Heroism, charm/hold/dominate spells
Illusion: Invisibility spells, Shadow Shield

Abjuration, Evocation and Necromancy cannot be prohibited schools.
