Fun but not so practical party ideas?

I've had a few I'd like to try just for the fun of it. Some of these are;

Dual wielding fighter with daggers/short swords.

Archer with slings.

Assassin with quarterstaff.

Has anyone had not so practical but fun ideas for a party?

Maybe I'm just weird but none of those ideas seem silly to me. I'm running an assassin/mage at the moment with pips in dual wielding, daggers and short swords and he's turned into a homicidal maniac!

    Assassin with quarterstaff.

...is actually not that bad, if you consider they have a very high base-damage for back"stabbing" in both games: Staff of Striking in BG: EE and Staff of the Ram in BG II: EE.

I'm currently rolling for a Beast Master/Cleric Dual, which I feel fits the category; lots of summons but lackluster weaponry (Quarterstaff, Club, Sling). Other than that I did an insanity run with a Jester once, where I chose my party members by varying degrees of insanity and acted accordingly with my PC. Loads of fun, that one, if you feel like roleplaying.

Priest of Helm that has a crisis of faith and duals into thief...to backstab with the Sword of Seeking for the ultimate blasphemy.

A (specialist) mage that loses his trust to magic at the hands of Irenicus and duals into fighter...will trust brawn over brains after that. Still a fighter with less hp but access to scrolls and wands.

I also recommend the Card kit mod. Card kit has the ability to cast random spells from his deck. Totally unpractical and awesomely unpredictable. Has thief lvl progression so gets to high level spells quickly, but can not control them. At thief lvl 11 he will be able to cast 6th lvl mage spells! Nearly half the xp of a proper lvl 12 mage. He is also a thief out of necessity but with only a few token skills. But tons of fun. I started one, Irenicus Dungeon was much rougher than I was used to (I also have scs but have mastered the first dungeon until now) but I will get used to the chaos, and am having fun. It forces you to abandon all strategy and just roll with the flow and think on your feet. Hoping for a melf's acid arrow, getting a web, well that may work, too! etc.

A PC with Shank or Carbos as an NPC (Baldurs Gate equivalent to Yamcha).

What about monk or fighter with quarterstaves?

Monks can't use staves for some ridiculous reason.

Staves on a fighter are actually a solid choice.

You can go one further with the Assassin + Quarterstaffs by going Assassin 25/ Fighter 26 DualClass.

Get those 5 pips in quarterstaff and UAI + Assassinate HLAs.

Currently I have been enjoying my Wizard Slayer Dart Thrower. You hit 5 ApR very early on in BG:EE and can literally laugh at every caster encounter in the entire game. Especially when you get Darts of stunning/Wounding where you can throw a few darts and you can completely disable the entire enemy team of casters (in a single round).

(Both as a pure fighter and as a Wizard Slayer 13 / Thief X)

Skald tank was another unconventional idea I had in mind

Do you know if this is still viable wizard slayer/dart thrower in item/spell revisions

Wizard-Slayer/Dart Thrower was technically only made possible in >V1.3 (Wizard Slayers apply 25% miscast with ranged weapons), I am unfamiliar whether or not if item/spell revisions are compatible with BG2:EE.

Both IR and SR are very much compatible, and should have no bearing on how WS works.

To add to this list halfing fighter specialising in slings

At the moment I'm trying a mage-only run. Nalia, Aerie, Jan, and eventually Imoen to go with my mage-thief. It's interesting. Before I got the $5k to allow me to cast spells in town, it was Chinese-curse interesting.

I'm doing this right now in IWDEE. Works great.
    What's your setup, items etc?

I did a Bhaalspawn-only run back in the day. Solo through chapter 3, PC + Imoen through the rest of SoA, then PC + Imoen + Sarevok through ToB. You get a lot of the fun of a solo run, but the big challenges aren't quite so unforgiving.

Now that is a good idea for a playthrough. I presume you solo'd BG because nobody knew Imoen was a Bhaalspawn?
    Makes very good roleplaying sense.

    What class was your Charname?

I ran a Cleric/Ranger. I'd just learned about them gaining Druid spells in addition to the Cleric ones and wanted to give it a try. Since that sounded pretty cheesy, the "Bhaalspawn-only" caveat was my compromise to help maintain the challenge. And I liked the symmetry of having essentially an avatar of Divine magic, one of Arcane magic, and one of physical might.

I didn't run BG1, too, but if I had I certainly would have brought Imoen with me. It'd be hard to justify her exclusion on account of not being Bhaalspawn at a time when I didn't even know that *I* was a Bhaalspawn.

In BG2, I was playing it as if I were embracing my divine heritage and didn't want to get entangled in the affairs of mortals. For a start-to-finish playthrough, I'd probably play it that I viewed my quest as my burden and didn't want to place anyone else at risk. Imoen tags along because we're not allowed back into Candlekeep, and she's my sister, so I can't very well just abandon her alone in an unfamiliar world. She's at risk with me, but she's at risk without me, and we're family.

(Plus, if you ascribe motivations to party members, too, I hardly think the type of person who breaks into Gorion's desk, reads a letter about the kind of danger her brother is in, and responds by sneaking along after him would then blithely walk away just because he asked. She'd probably say she was leaving and then follow behind again. And I'd imagine the PC would get tired of asking her to leave and eventually just accept her presence.)

Wow, is it fun, besides impractical?

I once goofed around with 6 different specialist wizards (mp party so no npc). I was trying out the mod that gives each specialty wizard different high level abilities (the name of that mod escapes me now). It was entertaining for a while but I gave up before completing TOB. It was challenging trying to use each wizard's abilities as efficiently as possible though...

It's a pity that archers can't get all the pips in slings. I've EEkeepered one to max out slings and it's both fun and practical. It makes more sense really that the party member that uses a sling is very very skilled with it. I'd hate to be in melee while my mage buddy with limited training tries to hit the guy next to me with a sling. Those projectiles can go just about anywhere if you're not careful.

@JoenSo The Might and Guile mod has a "Halfling Slinger" kit which can put 5 pips in slings.

I once did a Sir Robin + Ministrels (1 Pal, 5 Bards) run through IWD which was actually quite fun, but I don't rmb their stats etc. *^_^* - Come to think of it.. perhaps a party of two Inquisitors.. Cardinal Biggles, Cardinal Fang & Cardinal Ximénez.. three.. three Inquisitors would be worth a try, too - at least nobody would expect it/them!!! *^_~*
