I dont know if this new challenge rule setting will get the attention i hope for but maybe @JuliusBorisov can help us here.
With all the work going on, I've been slowing catching up (since I had left this thread in November) and have stopped at the 96th page today. Currently I have 660 new comments in this thread. Not even finding time for reading, what to say about playing
Okay, than its up to the rest of the Beamdog Team to keep this wonderful challenge alive. Who´s up for that @JuliusBorisov? Just nudge them into the thread!
I know that @Gate70 plays all day long with @Grond0 - too bad he never showed up here!
What about @Ardanis? He has given deep insights here. Maybe he could show more of them by playing?
I am also sure that @Alesia_BH would fit perfectly into this challenge - too bad she lacks time heavily...
Maybe @Myrag should finally abandon his party-run number 1000+ and give our new challenge a try!!!
Four skelis, Spirit Armor, Stoneskin, Blur, Mirror Image, Fireshield Red/Blue, Haste, Improved Invisibility and got saves to 1. Lured Neothelid out of the room to the killing zone and he went down like a sack of potatoes.
The same go jumped on Akanna, and lured her Aerial Servant out of the room, another Improved Invisibility and smacked her down. Surrendered the fort and activated the bridge being invisible, and smacked the Fire Elemental down, took 5 times the goblet. Soon Crusader Attacks.
@Harpagornis Well Bane is basically Knight level with no gloves and bad selections.
Btw does anybody know if Protection from Evil has been changed, wiki says it gives +2 save bonus, but ingame description doesn't say anything about it?
Btw does anybody know if Protection from Evil has been changed, wiki says it gives +2 save bonus, but ingame description doesn't say anything about it?
I suspect it's just a mistake in the text. I agree that the reference to saving throws in the mage spell has gone, but it's still there in the priest versions.
P.S. If there is anyone who has "overplayed" this game its you @Grond0. So give us your best shot at the end. Okay? I know you can do that! Maybe you will come back again. I am sure you will. No?
I would certainly expect so .
In the meantime I decided if it's good enough for Harpagornis it must be good enough for me - so rolled up a totemic druid to try out the Chosen One challenge (taking potions as his special pet item, though he's not actually used any of those yet). I did have a saved starting character for a totemic druid previously, but that wasn't designed to do without items. I was looking for a roll of at least 92 this time, but was starting to think of compromising when a 96 appeared - my best for a long time, even if not quite a match for Harpagornis' kensai .
A lion had a quick snack on Shoal to give Elegido a couple of levels - though he only got a miserly 8 HPs for those. A couple of reputation quests provided a further level with a more welcome 9 HPs. The odd charm was mixed in with sling shots and spirit summons as Elegido travelled up via the FAI to recover a bowl for Tenya. As resting is safe in that area he used a succession of spirits to attack the nearby ankheg and eventually finished it off as it only recovered 100 HP from each rest. That put him close to level 5 and handing Joia's ring back netted him a maximum 10 more HPs.
With the summons upgrade at level 5 Elegido moved on to the basilisk area where a spirit snake had a fine time attacking the monsters just out of his view. The first greater basilisk was enough for another level and 8 more HPs. Normally I use Korax to deal with Mutamin, but now with 2 spirits available I set a pair of snakes on him and they duly poisoned him to death. His pet basilisks then pushed Elegido up to level 7 - back to misery there though with just the 3 HPs. Korax then was recruited to help a snake, a bear and a couple of nymphs to overwhelm Kirian & co.
Summons are now pretty powerful and Elegido has just got some quick XP from the battle horrors at Durlag's Tower. The next level shouldn't be long in coming tomorrow .
Summons and call lightning soon finished off the battle horror and doom guard on the walls at Durlag's Tower - taking Elegido to level 8 and 10 more HPs.
Inside the tower the ghasts were soon chomped and summons also surrounded Riggilo and ate him for breakfast - spirit bear fear preventing him from defending himself. Downstairs, some greater dopplegangers were pulled out one by one into summons. Along with a few phase spiders and ghasts that took Riggilo close to level 9 and using +1 bullets to shoot a flesh golem netted him a further 9 HPs.
He tried for quite a while to kill a mustard jelly, but even with strength of one, bless and nymphs healing spirit snakes he couldn't do enough damage with his non-proficient scimitar. That prompted a quick trip to Ulgoth's Beard to get the +3 staff, but rather than go back to Durlag's Tower after that she shot up the golems at High Hedge before talking to Thalantyr to get a potion case.
Then it was off to the Lighthouse area where summons and lightning quickly chewed through sirines without giving them a chance to shoot any of their arrows. Slinging a couple of golems was enough for level 10. The upgrade that gave to spirits meant the lions could now chomp the final golem - avoiding any danger of it hiding in walls this time!
With his final BG1 level in the bag, Elegido went to the Nashkel Mine and peacefully passed through there invisibly before nymphs successfully dominated Mulahey at the first attempt.
Nimbul did well to survive nymph call lightning, but was then immediately held. Tranzig found spirit snakes too much to handle allowing Elegido to ask for a lift to the Bandit Camp from Teven. At the Camp invisibility was used to bypass Tazok (there's no advantage to fighting him). Inside the tent Elegido produced some summons out of sight of Raemon and then buffed up. The summons then distracted the opposition allowing Elegido to ransack the chest and use pixie dust to escape (saving an invisibility potion as a result). He went invisibly through the Cloakwood, waving to both the amazons and Molkar on the way. Normally I kill all Drasus' group, but with no benefit to the boots and no particular need for money Elegido just bypassed them and sneaked down through the mine. On the bottom level I didn't muck about with the guard this time, but just used lions to kill him and the battle horrors. After a rest, snakes and nymphs went to kill Davaeorn using farsight. The mustard jelly once again proved an obstacle, so Elegido just grabbed the nearby treasure and left. He rested prior to flooding the mine to get a second Bhaal horror and will be working through a few reputation quests to push that up before stocking up on scrolls and potions and moving on to the City.
A quick tour of the realms finishing off reputation quests soon pushed that up to 20 and Elegido also picked up the charisma and wisdom tomes (using chaotic commands to defend against the trap on the latter). He also hit the XP cap while doing that. A bit of shopping followed before heading for Baldur's Gate.
In the City Elegido stayed out of the way while summons dealt with Ramazith and Marek in the process of acquiring the tomes. He just sneaked into the Iron Throne to talk to Thaldorn before reporting for duty in Candlekeep.
I think the safest way of dealing with the ogre mage ambush on arrival would have been a potion of magic blocking (potion of invisibility could be dispelled if you fail to pause prior to the ogre magi starting their spells). However, up to that point Elegido had not used any potions and I was trying to continue avoiding doing that if possible. Instead I tried to run away on arrival, which is a tactic I hadn't tried previously, but has been used by others - as you can see I didn't get far ... Edit: reloaded a few times to double-check that it wasn't just my bad timing. In my installation anyway you'd have to be very lucky to survive attempting that. Testing with the addition of boots of speed shows you can then outrun hold spells, charm person is a toss-up, but both acid arrow and chromatic orb will get you (either of which could easily kill this type of character). Even by my standards of acceptable risk therefore attempting to run away from that ambush is not a good tactic unless you've got a character with both high HPs and very good saves (or charm immunity) - or of course if your restrictions don't give you a choice .
-4/-3/-3 Daeros Full Plate -4 Dexterity 19 -1 Single Weapon Style * -1 Helm of Balduran -3 Blur 24 rounds -2 Protection from Evil 20 rounds -4 Improved Invisibility 13 rounds
-19 vs melee is enough to get only criticals from all other than Bel, there's no crushing damage in this fight -18 vs missiles is enough to get only criticals from Erinyes, even without missile boots
Bel still hits 70% of the time, which you can lower with Strength spell to 50%. And with average damage per hit of 24,5 and 3 apr he should do average damage of 51 and 37 per round respectively. With 127 hp I should be able to survive Bel on direct tanking.
Elemental damage in end fight
Fire fots of fire Ice Arrows Erinyes Lightning Bolt Cornugon
Daeros Full Plate 2x Protection from Fire 12 hours 3x Protection from Cold 12 hours Protection from Magic 2 hours
That should make me immune (or heal) to all elemental damage
Other damage in end fight
Poison (-2 vs Death) Belhifet, Heprenaan Disease (-2 vs Death) Belhifet (-2 to str and con) Bleeding (no save) Cornugon
3x Protection from Poison 12 hours
Bleeding can't be stopped but it's no biggie. Disease hurts your str and con, but Thac0 doesn't matter to me because I'm hitting only criticals with Martyr's anyway, and con hit of 18 hp which isn't that much. But I've to see if I can get my saves vs. death to -1 to stop that.
The real killers in the end fight are however:
Aura of Fear from Belhifet (save vs wand) Stun from Cornugon hit (save vs death) Various Hold and Charm spells
Fear can be dealt with either Kiel's helmet, or in my case Resist Fear 1 hour Stun can be only stopped by save vs. death of 1 Protection from Magic should stop all the normal spells
So number one priority is to get saves vs. death to 1.
8 Base -1 Helmet of Balduran -1 Blur 24 rounds -2 Protection from Evil 20 rounds -4 Improved Invisibility 13 rounds
Should give 0 saves which should stop stun, I've to still confirm the PfE saves though.
Just realized a small obstacle before going the Underground, well huge actually. As I don't have 18 wisdom, and because I can't use potions, I can't get the lich in Kanaglym to stay and fight. Which then means no Robe of Aptitude which would be huge help in both Crusader Attacks and End Fight. Hmm...
Cracked the mystery of Robe of Arcane Aptitude, here's the low down:
You need 24 lore to get Zhadroth to stay and fight you, I of course have only 22, of course. But there's one item that buffs lore and that I can use, Brevin's Staff which gives +10 to lore. Lucky that I still had it, and finally a reason for lore buffs.
@Harpagornis Well I can only hope that this happens in the fight
@Harpagornis The average time should still be with 1/10 hits and 3 apr only 20 rounds to kill Bel, if he didn't teleport, so I think that should give quite high probability to kill him on average. But we'll see if I took everything into account, probably not.
Chapter 10, did enough guests to reach 500k xp and level 9/10, got the Martyr's Morningstar. Two hasted skelis, confusion helmet and wasted the Myconids to get Myconid Summons. Underground River, lured the Myconids to the Crusaders, and smacked the Shrieker down.
With invisibility to Kanaglym. Zhadroth, 2 hasted skelis, Brevin's Staff to get lore to 24, Secret Revealed and wasted the lich for the Robe of Arcane Aptitude, and its Spell Sequencer.
With invisibility sneaked to the basement, and freed Daeros, picked up his armor and quickly escaped the place, didn't fight anybody. Next up the Crusader Attacks.
The Chosen One is beating me badly... holy cow. Leveling up a naked Kensai to 7 while still leaving open enough easy XP for the Druid is absolutely NO fun. The Ankheg farming alone had killed me two times now cause i got tired at some point. A Sirene killed me another time after an arrow catched me a nanosecond before reaching the exit. @Grond0 seems to be much better at this...
Okay, lets recalibtrate the whole thing:
Character: Krell the Human Berserker
Destiny: Chosen One
Stars: * Cloak
In this case i imported a character @Vynn had rolled for me - thanks mate! Potions are for the weak so this one will be a reminiscence of an old idea from @Grond0. Lets hope this will bring me some luck! Or one of the most memorizing deaths...
@Harpagornis I was just going to ask you about changing the Bane challenge to Knight challenge, as I haven't been using shields either, but saw that you already did that in op. Taking potions should make Bel much easier, and as the Bane himself has been banished from the op, I don't think there's a reason not to do so. So these are my choices to the Knight challenge:
I am also sure that @Alesia_BH would fit perfectly into this challenge - too bad she lacks time heavily...
Yeah. Sadly, I don't see it happening anytime soon. I'm flying back to the States and my computer tomorrow, but I'll only have two months until I start the Pacific Crest Trail (April - September). Soon after, I'll be heading to New Zealand to hike the Te Araroa (October - January). February 2019 is the earliest I can see a LoB run happening.
I promise you this, though, friends: now that I'm aware of this thread, I'll definitely be a reader, and I look forward to learning from all that you've achieved and will achieve. You've done some excellent work here, everyone. Congratulations, and thanks for sharing!
Too bad @Alesia_BH - but getting out into nature sound great. Have fun - may mother Earth be with you!
With Krells reanimation as a Berserker and a Star in Cloaks the real fun has started. After getting some gold, scrolls and Algernons Cloak he did the infamous Basilisk XP Loop and dualed to Druid at level 7. As the Chosen One will put Krell to his limits i am not ashamed about using this exploit cause even with the easy XP there will still be enough obstacles in his way. However: With Throwing Daggers hitting hard for 13-16 damage now (Berserk, 7/2 APR) he can shoot from the backline like there is no tommorrow while the Nymphs will paralyze or dominate (nearly) everything that will cross their path. Time collect Displacement Cloak and grab the first Tomes before going for Mulahey!
Scavenging the castle grounds and Belegram netted 13 Invisibility, 8 Heroism, 5 Power, 6 Speed, 3 Storm and multiple Mind Focusing, Invulnerability etc. potions which should be well enough. Got the Spell Immunity scroll from Hephernaan's left chest, Spell Immunity: Conjuration and got the Crown of Lies from the Maze chest, which allows me to add three 4th level spells to Spell Sequencer. My plan sequencer wise is to make:
use Spell Sequencer before lift ends, and make another with Robe of Aptitude. Then when Bel's used his Dispel, hit him with Minor Sequencer, which lowers his Thac0 by three rest of the fight, and warns him with acid damage, that he still could run away from Natural Redux.

After rolling for more than half an hour i came up with an epic 97 roll. Finally. But what happened then? The game crashed...
Okay, the game wants to cheat me? I can do this too! With other words: I reconfigured the roll using EE-Keeper...
I think in this case thats a decision i can live with. However: Say hello to my very first Crusader!

P.S. Krell will have to wait until tomorrow as its time to get some sleeping!

Buid-In-Permanent-Haste -> Bear
Minor Sequencer: Strength, Melf's Acid Arrow
Spell Sequencer: Enchancted Weapon, Fireshield Blue, Improved Invisibility
