Although Baldur's Gate 2's loot system is pretty good, Baldur's Gate 1's loot system really isn't. You are far less likely to obtain an awesome magic item by exploring and looting whole dungeons (e.g. Firewine, Ulcaster, Ice Island, Thief's Maze, the ankheg lair, the wyvern lair, the whole Werewolf Island questline) than you are by looking for rings under rocks, investigating holes in trees, stealing cloaks off of random people's backs, and checking if there's anything hidden on the second floor of the inn.

Well most of the items that you mentioned were suppose be pixel-hunting Easter eggs before the Highlight tab feature was put in, and the cloak is actually part of a quest.
I also like to think you are not the only adventurer who has heard about loot in those dungeon crawls and those that came before cleaned the place out. What little you do find is just items the party had to drop to make room in their inventory to carry out everything else.

Edit: The lack of Corpse's Corner is woeful however
