*SPOILERS* Tips and tricks! How to ace BG!

AnduinAnduin Member Posts: 5,745
I have seen a cheese thread before. But I would like to hear some stories of how to defeat the game or win battles just using the tools available (No quick clicking or CLUA Console here please!)

If you use a neat trick to waste your enemies without cheating we wanna know!

My favourite trick was to cast Mislead with a multiclass Thief / Mage and Backstab for Bhaal! After your backstab you would disappear again straight away! A powerful move that could defeat most powerful enemies in the game. I believe this was a lawful move... Perhaps not possible till near the end of the game... but oh boy, you could kill anything!

A thief/mage? This could just be infinitely acheived by using staff of the magi

I like the idea of this thread, as I tend to not play with a lot of cheese and/or exploits. I really hate silly so-called tactics, but get frustrated by battles that really push you in that direction.

buff up with whatever you have and chaaaargeee! :) (a paladin would be doing exactly that, so that's not even a smart tactics, but pure role-playing!)

works pretty well unless you need to take out mob's protection off.

Grease. A very underated spell. I like to chuck one in on a narrow space and place a fighter to block incoming enemies trying to leave the greased area. I then blitz the idiots falling over behind with ranged weaponry! Sweet!

Never forget pick pockets does not need to be high... Charm then pick pocket away until you get what you want!

    Web+Stinking Cloud+Grease+Incindiary Cloud+Death Fog+Slow (Why not)

Fireball/Skull Trap/Cone of Cold/Delayed Blast Fireball/Lightning Bolt(even better if you can get it at an angle so it hits them multiple times)/Flame Strike (Oh wait its not AoE like it is in IWD and PnP), Glyph of Warding, Holy Smite.

Oh and for the kicker. Send in a buffed up cleric with Free Action and Blade Barrier up. Does it take forever? Sure but its still fun.

(Extra credit points for using things like Chant, Prayer, Recitation, Greater Malison, etc while they're in there)

@Dragonspear ... Yes, everything would be dead after that!

    @Anduin

Sometimes though the most satisfying thing you can do in an AD&D game is let your Wizard blow their entire load and sit back giggling like a schoolgirl. It's like, the Wizard looks at the Fighter and goes, "Ok I'm level 9 now. Rest your shoulders and watch this!"

But you need to win the Twisted Rune fight to get that. Inexperienced players probably won't be able to do so until Ch 6. Experienced players will probably have modded it to make it more difficult, and will also have to put it off for a while. Mislead's a bit more easily available.

Staff of the Magi is not a backstab weapon, even as a staff, because it's mage-only. Switching weapons removes the invisibility, so you'd literally have to run behind a corner, hide in shadow, get back, attempt a stab. :/

I always thought it was a backstab weapon because thieves can specialise in it? It's less backstab more backsmack.

Staves can stab, but the Staff of Magi can't. I believe it's because it's a non-thief weapon.

But weapons like staff of Rynn or Staff Mace or Staff of the Ram all can backstab (and that for much, much MUCH more damage)

Honestly this game is just so easy, lol. Spell yourself up for a major battle (Haste, Recitation, Prayer, etc.). I've never really had any problems crushing my enemies. Gathering extra levels early on always helps too.

If you're fighting a mage summon level 1 monsters and send them as cannon fodder. Wait until the mage depletes his cone of cold, time stop etc spells figthing a low level creature (this works well against Irenicus).

Have 100% fire resistance and any character. Run up, and attract Sarevok, Angelo, Tazok, and Semaj into attacking you. When Angelo begins casting a fireball, gulp an invisiblity potion. Watch as Angelo, Tazok, and Semaj kill eachother for you! :D XP isn't important at this stage anyways lol. This works in Tutu at least because I stumbled on it with my no-reload solo assassin.

Make use of wands in BG1 especially. Summoning wands are useful to no end as having the extra HP to soak up damage while your characters are low level is is invaluable.

You can use the tactic of: Lots of summons lead the charge, with buffed up party members behind them for ALOT of the encounters in BG1. Extremely useful.

I really like the Web + Summon Spiders combination. Even in BG2, it was surprisingly effective for a large part of the game. Also it's a really simple combo to cast.

Web + archers or Web + free action, to add to the web-love.

Magic. It's overrated. I always just charge in with three good fighter/hackers and a rear wing of archer/fraggers and it's always over fast enough. Wizards are always sitting around with a spell prepped and saying... "uh... duh... what do I do with this?"

A very neat trick lets the PC defeat liches without using more than two spells at most. It works best for solo mages. Conjur a Hakeashar, or a Nishruu (in that case, have another Nishruu up your sleeve for later) and attack the lich with it. Watch it unload it's whole load (surprisingly much, considering it is technically dead) until it has to finally go mellee on you. After the initial moment of awe (a lich trying to hit you with it's bare hands, because it is all out of spells), destroy it with a good sling, a lich doesn't even move fast enough to catch up with non-hasted characters.

a nice low-level trick for bg, particularly single, fairly powerful opponents (like Greywolf): one guy hasted engages the target, gets his attention and then runs around out of reach while the rest of the party use range and magic. for longer battles have two NPCs tag in and out while being healed by your cleric. for ranged opponents have party members close by to melee swarm when they switch to bows.
