    no you won't because it is comparable to 90~ level mage and if mage could progress like he normaly do he would destroy 40/40/31 fmc

    I'm a little confused by what you mean. 40 is the level cap. What do you mean by level 90?

    And yes if you remove the exp cap, you can max out all three classes at 40, thus making you stronger than any single class level 40 char

    As I reach (I guess) the midgame of Shadow of Amn, the benefit of Dual-class over Multi-class is becoming quite apparent, as Anomen surges ahead of Aerie in terms of spell levels, even though Aerie's been with the party since she was rescued right after Irenicus' Dungeon, whereas I've done some things without Anomen. In time, I suspect Imoen, who is way behind everyone else right now, will actually become my party's primary Arcane caster.

    Which makes me think... FMC levelling must be unbearably slow, and I don't know why anyone would choose to do that, except I guess for roleplay purposes, or for a specific mod. It's all very nice having a super flexible character, but he/she can only do one thing at a time, so you might as well make him/her proficient at it. One character cannot be hacking at somebody with a sword, and casting both Arcane and Priest spells at the same time.

    The FMC won't be a bad character alongside your party, it's just you wouldn't make him to be a primary of any one role. You'll need another base of each type of class, the FMC is basically there to just supplement and be the 2nd best in your party of every role.

    One character cannot be hacking at somebody with a sword, and casting both Arcane and Priest spells at the same time.

    An excellent point and the main reason why Mage/Cleric is a bad combination. You can only cast one spell per round anyway.

    I'm not a fan of multiclass Fighters either as they can't go beyond Specialization, which to me is half the reasons to roll a Fighter in the first place. Might as well go with Paladin or Ranger at that point.

    Finally, I don't even want to imagine rolling a F/M/C... ideally you want 18STR, 18DEX, 18CON, 18INT and 18WIS. Good luck.

    The benefit of Mage/Cleric is variety. Its true you can only cast one spell at a time, but its almost guaranteed to be the perfect spell.

    Now, I love a group with a lot of spellcasting so having a mage, a cleric, and a cleric/mage sounds good to me!

    Any two classes can be a strong multi. Even the triple class can be useful, just not really for power gaming. Once the experience plateaus you end up needing absurd amounts of experience for each level (over a million per level for Mage!). So it's not the "best" sort of character design, but I still find it fun to run.

    Actually I don't care about min/maxing stats, so that's not a major problem. Also Aerie is pretty effective in my BG 2 party as she has enough options to be useful in almost any situation, from combat buffs, to throwing Minute Meteors, crowd control spells and dispelling/breaching etc.

    So M/C seems to be okay, but F/M/C is really pushing it too far though. Three xp-hungry classes takes too long to level up to be remotely efficient, especially as I think the Fighter element is kinda wasted cos you are wasting alot of spellcasting potential if you stick a F/M/C in a melee.

    i will put it simple
    level 31 mage is 8kk exp
    level 40/31/40 FMC is 8kk*3=24kk exp
    how about reverse situation?
    31 lvl mage 8kk exp
    FMC 2,6kk exp ? this is the same would you say FMC is better in this situation?

    do you understand? it is not comparable because it is not on the same level and
    comparable is 8kk exp f/m/c 18/17/19 who will be less powerfull

    about f/m/c vs f/m i think f/m/c is better in bg1 and probably in bg2 yes he levels slow but good multiclassing is only with fighter because you can cast spells and fight in melee and m/c lacks melee and being stuck with 1 spell/round is really not cool when you CAN NOT fight in melee

    that is why fighter/mage or f/c is soo good

    in bg2 you could do something tricky to make f/c possible like having duhm improved haste and 2 weapons pfmw and other things but f/m will still be better than c/m and later on chaining some cleric spells is fun i must admit that

    Actually hitting 40/40/40 with the exp cap removed was about 28million exp.

    And I'm not talking about it on comparable levels. With the exp cap removed the 40/40/40 FMC was pretty much the strongest character I've ever seen and probably among the strongest you can create.

    Yeah sure if a single class character didn't have a level 40 limit and could keep going to the equivalent of 28 million exp. Then yeah they'd probably be stronger, this isn't the case in game though.

    If you remove the xp cap, you can advance to a max level of 40 in any class, because there's only data present up to level 40.

    With mods you can extend that to level 50 in every class, which is the game's maximum. At which point you'll have to ask yourself: single class level 50 mage with ~30 HLAs or triple class fmc/fmt with 100+ HLAs.

    Moreover, you can attack and cast a spell (obviously won't work with spells with long cast times) in the same round, you just have to tick all boxes in the autopause menu.

    I'm atm playing a customised BWP-install, still in Chapter 5 of BG1 and sitting at ~2.3 million xp per party member. Therefore it's quite possible to get into the high double digit million xp range.

    you are comparing cheated character vs normal character
    f/m/c @ 8kk is a little worse than 8kk mage or sorc

    @ big mods (TDD, CtB, DSotSC, NTotSC)
    I my opinion they're ok, you'll get varied quests,
    which run the gamut from small fedex quests, killing a young dragon, to hacking your way through vampires and drow in BG1. In BG2 you'll get some new cities/villages with their own quests (demon incursion etc.) and class dependant quests (CtB).

    What you have to bear in my mind while playing through them, is that they're ancient.
    Which means that you'll get recycled maps from all over the place (BG1, BG2, IWD, Planescape). Moreover, compared to BG2 NPCs or the BG1NPC Project, NPCs from those big mods (TDD, CtB, DSotSC, NTotSC) are quite silent.

    Additionally, some of those custom enemy combat scripts are just a bit over vanilla BG2 level, which is quite jarring with SCS/II installed, due to their simplicity in comparison to SCS/II.

    But playing on insane seems to be the great equalizer for difficulty concerns, or I'm still not accustomed to the damage potential of some enemies. Like eating a x6 backstab with 98 damage from a drow stalker (common enemy in one of The Vault's quests) in the Nashkell mines in chapter 7 of BG1 just when you're out of stoneskins.

    Does anybody knows if the FMC can eventually reach a mage level high enough to cast 9th level spells?

    No - unless if you remove the XP cap. A mage has to be 18th level to cast 9th level spells, which is 3 million XP. With the 8 million XP cap in place, a F/M/C will only get 2.66 million XP per class.

    Mage/Cleric = Yes.
    Illusionist/Cleric = Yes, just yes.
    Fighter/Mage/Cleric = No. Possibly not a bad character to solo the game with, but we all know FMT is better at that, and then FMC is a waste for everything else, so.

    One thing worth mentioning: as a triple class, you will not get to have lvl9 spells i believe in BG2, so no HLA spells for you. You do get to use the bonus lvl6-7-8 mage spells though, and you'll have 2(?) lvl7 cleric spells avaialble.

    However, the sheer amount of spells you'll be able to cast will be rather impressive. I'm not too sure that additional fighter bonus is worth it over the loss of dragon breaths and additional cleric levels though.
  • nanonano Member Posts: 1,632
    I haven't played this class but it sounds fun. I'm going to try one for my next playthrough. My initial guess is that this is going to play very differently from a cleric/mage even though they look similar on the surface. While a cleric/mage is some kind of super caster this is going to be more of a buffed fighter. You have the offensive buffs of the cleric and the defensive buffs of a mage and the APR and HLAs of a fighter so you should be a beast in melee, even if the lack of high level spells makes you a poor spellcaster. At any rate, being able to protect your cleric buffs with SI:Abjuration should be pretty useful, as dispel is one big problem I encounter with fighter/cleric and ranger/cleric multis.

Good luck.
    Lulz.
    Mage/Cleric is "TEH SHNITZ" actually.
    Beeing able to cast both cleric AND wizard spells in contingencies and spell triggers makes you a killer caster at the cost of having to wait longer to get access to your best spells.

    Minor Sequencer - Bless + Chant
    Spell Sequencer - Holy Smite x3
    Spell Sequencer - Haste / Bless / Chant
    Chain Contingency - Sunray x3
    Chain Contingency - Storm of Vengeance x3

    Or...

    Time Stop + Harm + Poke with a stick to kill pretty much anything in the game.

    This is one of the most interesting classes. Its only drawbacks?

    1) Need to restrict yourself to mage robes...
    2) No flashy swords (cleric weaponry range)...
    3) No final level divine/arcane spells (7/10)...

    But on the other hand...

    1) The robes of archmagi/vecna, or the aslyferund (and other ones) elven chain (designed for casters), are more than enough for you.

    2) Warhammer and Flail are more than enough for all your melee needs.

    3) The only real loss. You can counter it through an xp remover, but it is a cheat and not worth using one.

    Also, being a Half-Elf... Gives you nice racial bonuses! Just remember to be a neutral alignment char, so you can get ALL cleric spells.

    One of the drawback is also the non thief abilities for a solo run, but there's no door or chest you can't open with your strength that is essential to the storyline. And still there are some scrolls and the spell to open doors/chests if you really need to, i bought all i could find to spare me the pain to memorize them.
    I don't care about traps i just walk on them hehe :) there are a few deadly traps tho ! in the planar sphere for instance ! i remember dying from this one on my first enhanced edition run !

    They are very good at tanking, probably the best i tried so far, but even tho they can reach 80% dmg reduction they can still get interrupted while casting so its often better to start with PFMW and kill as many as you can and then switch to the damage reduction when u get less interrupted because of fewer enemies. I really had some fun in ToB tanking huge pack of foes and slaying them while my PC says "scream for mercy !" and they flee in panic :)

    And its also pretty annoying to buff up !
  • Demonoid_LimewireDemonoid_Limewire Member Posts: 424
    Hey. If something cannot open, just use the level 2, arcane spell, "knock". No need for a thief. This mage skill opens chests or doors (locked items), the cleric spell find trap does just this (finds...well...traps!), and after that, you either evade them, or prepare and march through. For invisibility, use "staff of the mage" or "improved invisibility". And don't mind loosing a thief class and/or backstab ability. All the other ones (abilities) of this triple class, are more than enough, for a full experience of a game.

    Something else i didnt mention and is another tactic with this toon is to stack damage shields to make a use of your low AC, you can stack 5 differents actually, Blue and red shield, blade barrier, globe of blades and Aura of flaming death, i killed korgan in 5 sec with it while standing next to him doing nothing !

    Dunno, what rules BG/BGEE follows anymore, as our dungeon master would have denied such stupid shit. You can't just apply the full con bonus for any other class than fighter/pala/ranger if you are comfortable with it.

    edit/edit: 18 or 19 con does not play a role at all..it's only the rounding system in BG favoured towards the player, which is not favored towards per dnd towards the player as it is always rounded down.
    ((d10+4)/3)+((d8+2)/3)+((d4+2)/3) is still 10 HP for me...or maybe you show us your magic pnp-math, where you mystically get hidden dices out of nowhere?
    This is only based on my pnp experience though...don't bother myself playing a triple-mclass in bg1^^

    BG/BGEE is based on AD&D (2 edition if i recall correctly) ruleset, and the way Multiclassed Fighter/addanotherclass(es) gains full fighter con bonus on every level-up in every class before dividing with number of classes is 100% identical with P&P version of the RPG. BG engine also rounds down when measuring HP gained on level-up, but remembers the fractions.

    For example, Dwarven fighter/thief with CON 19 has 10/2+6/2+5 or 13 HP on level 1/1. The said dwarf then levels as a thief, gaining (6+5)/2 or 5,5 HP (if playing with full HP), though the engine only gives her 5 HP because of rounding. When the dwarf hits level 2 on fighter, she gains (10+5)/2 or 7,5 HP, but the engine remembers the 0,5 fraction from her last level-up, so she actually gains 8 HP form leveling up as a fighter.

    With Half-elven fighter/cleric/mage it goes like this:

    LVL 1/1/1: (10+8+4)/3+4=11,33 -> 11 HP
    LVL 1/2/1: (8+4)/3=4 -> 11,33+4=15,33 -> 15HP
    LVL 2/2/1: (10+4)/3=4,67 -> 15,33+4,67=20HP
    LVL 2/2/2: (4+4)/3=2,67 -> 20+2,67=22,67 -> 22HP
    LVL 2/3/2: (8+4)/3=4 -> 22,67+4=26,67 -> 26HP
    LVL 3/3/2: (10+4)/3=4,67 -> 26,67+4,67=31,33 -> 31HP
    LVL 3/3/3: (4+4)/3=2,67 -> 31,33+2,67=34HP
