Best Jaheira Portrait

rodneyandsteptoerodneyandsteptoe Member Posts: 99
Seeing the Imoen Poll went well, I thought I'd move onto the second NPC in both BG and TOB, Jaheira. Same question again...

Do you prefer Jaheira from BG1: image

or Jaheira from BG2: image

Apologies that I couldn't find equal sized .png, if anyone can find a similiar sized BG2 image, let me know. By the way, I chose BG1 purely for the fact that it is my favourite portrait of any of the NPCs in both series but I do recognise that BG2 is probably a more realistic representation...

That's precisely why I chose the BG2 portrait. The BG1 portrait does not look Elven in the slightest to me.

Totally agree @Anduine and ironically the BG2 portrait links best with my choice for Imoen (BG2) but I still love that BG1 picture (reminds me a bit of Melanie Blatt from the band All Saints, a fav of mine):

BG1 portrait looks just better to me. Jaheira looks fiercely determined, strong and healthy. I'm not a big fan of "alienish" elven looks. I guess the way I see Elves and Half-Elves is too influenced by Tolkien.

I prefer the BG1 portrait. But I don't use either of them because I replace all the portraits with ones from IWD 1 and 2. This is the one I use for Jaheira:

The BG1 portrait doesn't look elven, but in every other aspect I find it much more fitting of Jaheira. In BG1 she has a focused, even somewhat stern expression. She looks like a strong and determined woman who has an interesting personality. Also her gear suits her well.

In BG2 Jaheira has a strangely vacant expression and her mouth makes me think of a sneer at best and "a porn pout" at worst. I'm not fond of the proportions and placement of her facial features. I particularly miss her nose from BG1, and her tiny excuse of one in BG2 is strangely skewed on her face. I don't like the armor, even though I realize that the player would likely have her wearing metal. All this said, her hair is prettier in BG1 but I don't mind her BG2 hair, especially since it reasonably reflects the changes the character has gone through from BG1 to BG2.

I so wish they had taken the basic features of BG1 Jaheira (nose, lenght of face etc.) and worked from there to get to her BG2 look, changing it to more elven (if necessary) and aging her in spirit.

Jaheira could just favor her human parentage.
If that were true, I am very confused why the BG1 and 2 portraits look drastically different. On the note of my personal opinion, however, I prefer that races look their race.

The BG 1 Portrait, definitely. I find the second portrait of her off-putting. I get the feeling she's examining me like a bug, whereas the first portrait is merely a strong woman being strong.

    I'm in difficult situation.

In BG1, she is portraited as a more like a supporter of the party, while in BG2 she is portraited as an more of a warrior, hence two portraits are that different.

Personally, I love Jaheira either way, no matter it is BG1 portrait or BG2.

I'd have to say BG2 mainly because I really detested Jaheira in BG1 but found her to be my favourite NPC in BG2. I kinda have trouble separating the portrait from the writing if that makes any sense...

I prefer the BG1 portrait as a portrait; it's one of the better ones present in either game. The BG2 one looks a lot more elven and is closer to how I imagine Jaheira would look.

And Jaheira's race is half-elf, not elf. She can look as human or as elven as the creator decides.

Well Jaheira is not an Elf, she is a Half-elf, in other words almost human. So imho both overdid it a little. But since having too much elven never hurts i vote for bg2. Minsc doesnt care anyway.

What's all through her hair in the BG2 portrait? also the second one is almost like they went out of their way to remind you she has some elf in her too.

BG1 no contest. That portrait is hot.

Her BG2 portrait looks weird and cross-eyed.

I just noticed from this thread that Minsc wears the very same armor in both his portraits, with the very same scratch on it. Just how did he keep it away from Irenicus??? :o

Anyway, BG1 thanks... BG2 makes no sense. Blonde in portrait, dark haired in game... also don't like her look in the BG2 portrait at *all*. She's totally derping all over the place >.<

Maybe he hid it the same place he hides Boo?

I've always been a fan of the more exotic looking elves over the sexy humans with pointy ears elves. I guess she is a half-elf and all, but the BG1 picture looks like a full human.

I love both portraits for different reasons. I went with the second because I do like how elven traits are much different in BG2 and because I loved my one play through of BG2. The story with Jaheira surprised me (I didn't know secrets about the game) and I thought it was a well written relationship, so it affects my objectivity. She is one of my favorite characters, actually - I love how Khalid will exclaim, "Gorion would be proud of your actions" while she tells me "I don't like the way this group is turning out. Better
    leadership might help."

I prefer the BG2 portrait because she looks more like a half-elf in that one.

A: I never claimed that Jaheira was not a half-elf.

B: I once again find myself telling you that my posts here are not declarations that must be abided by. They are not laws. They are not the speeches of some draconic dictator. They are my opinion. As I am "the creator" when I play, I prefer that those of Elven lineage look Elven. Those of Orcish lineage look Orcish, etc

This thread is about what each individual poster prefers (Unless I misread something), not what is right or wrong in the eyes of one individual.

EDIT: I'm starting to get the impression that you are contesting my posts for your amusement, regardless of whether or not there is a disclaimer stating that it is of my personal opinion, and not you being forced to agree at gunpoint.

I like that she looks a little more elven in BG2, but really, she looks too much like a porn queen rather than the mature, grizzly warrior that she actually is. Also, they might have overdone it a little with the elf features on a half-elf.

BG1 portrait... Isn't she suppose to be a cleric of Sylvanus or Druid anyways. BG2 portrait shows her in armour. That aint what a lady of the forest should wear.

Whilst were at it... Is her nose broken on that BG2 picture... It looks a little bent. And HELLLOOOO! What is all that stuff in her hair? Is she secretly a Jedi Padowine? I thought she was Half-Elf sensible warrior with wisdom... She is fighting with ear rings on! If I was an Orc I would grab them right away and yank 'em off causing much pain!

BG1 portrait says... You can buy me a drink, but try anything and this piece of wood will go where the sun doth not shine... I like it. Plus she is in Leather... Bonus!
  • cloakanddaggercloakanddagger Member Posts: 111
Yeah the BG1 portrait looks much more like Jaheira should look like. Leather since she is a druid. I agree with @andulin, way too much crap in her hair, and why is she wearing plate. And I like her more human looking side than her elven side.

I like the bg2 one because of the style. I think both are Jaheirsh.

Though BG1 Jaheira is a great portrait and possibly the better piece of art, but I prefer the look of her character in BG2. In BG2 she actually looks like an elf and it has a better sense of style, BG1 Jaheira just looks like a really well done cosplay portrait.

Though perhaps there's an argument for an all new portrait for Jaheira that combines the best of both.

/me <3 Jaheira! "Die, foul creature, and feed the earth!" Classic.

Looking at the picture for BG2 again I can't get over the expression on her face. It's like she put dog crap in your boots and is just waiting for you to put them on so she can laugh at you.

In the BG1 portrait you would probably be willing to put the crap in your own boots just to have her stop beating on you with that quarterstaff.

And one more thing: people saying that a portrait 'looks more/less than an elf (or half-elf) should look...' how many elves have you ever met personally? What you're really saying is 'that portait doesn't match what I always IMAGINED an elf would look like.' Unless we can get an actual elf in this thread I don't know if that argument holds water. :)

But there are D&D illustrations of elves. Its not like we have only read the description of elves and imagined it.
