Please help me justify ditching Imoen

I've never been able to do it.

Telling her she doesn't fit into the group composition just makes me feel like a sack of shit.

I've thought about ditching her to "protect" her. But she just had her soul stolen and I think it's fair to say that getting it back would be a higher priority than safety.

How do you justify leaving her, if you ever do? Do you just tell her to piss off and not think anything of it?

I never have been able to justify leaving her. Doesn't help that she is literally my favorite NPC.

RP that you didn't make it there in time to save her.

I do it all the time when I don't bring Jaheira/Minsc along.

Think about it this way. Technically you don't have to bring NPCs along with you for them to be part of your group, you just have to leave somewhere you visit often like your stronghold/main camp (like how DA:O works). It's how I've played since BG1, and since I come back to "headquarters" often to sell stuff or stash/retrieve items then it's also like you're checking up on her/Minsc and Jaheira constantly and keeping them up to date with what you're doing. Meanwhile, Jaheira is probably keeping her Harper contacts updated about your movements (which is why Elminster always seems to be at the right place at the right time) and Minsc is keeping an eye on Imoen. You can even consider leaving her with any of the more protective NPCs like Aerie and Nalia.

The dialogue options in Irenicus' Dungeon allow you to have 'amnesia' about her (BG2 being a stand alone game it was foreseen that some new players might not have played BG1 before) so there can be many reasons why you don't take to her in BG2.

As far as 'the game' is concerned you can play it as if you've had no contact with her since leaving Candlekeep and thus no historical attachment to her other than a long ago childhood friendship.

Add in the fact that imprisonment in the dungeon has messed with your head anyway and you're good to go - how you roleplay it is only limited by your imagination, not the game.

P.S. It helps if you've given Charname a back story, which in turn will be determined by how you built him or her.

Edit: I've just re-read the OP - sorry, I thought you were talking about dumping her at the start, not in the Asylum.

I mean, there are so many ways just in terms of possible roleplaying - you want her to be safe; you want her to go have her own adventures without getting bogged down with your problems (since she probably would've been safe in Candlekeep if she hadn't followed you); if you're Evil then she's just some annoying kid who's been nagging you your whole life and (if Lawful/Neutral) you just want her out of your face or (if Chaotic) you finally get frustrated enough to kill her.

Headcanon that the weeks/months that she's spent in Spellhold has left her physically weak and emotionally scarred. And then she's had her soul forcibly removed. So she's in no way in a good position to pick up where she left off and go adventuring. IMO this makes more sense than actually just having her join us with no issues in the asylum basement.

I would say the most realistic option would be to escort her to Athkatla to stay in a safe space like others have mentioned (de'Arnise keep or other stronghold or the Copper Coronet with Hendak) except we're automatically rerouted to the Underdark.

So we could headcanon that we have her smuggled back to the main land with Ginia and Ason if we did their quest once we learn that we have to find Irenicus in the Underdark. It's not the smoothest headcanon but it works well enough for me.

She obviously doesn't have as much of the "spark" of divinity left in her that you did. Maybe it's better to put her out of her misery than to allow her to waste away? It's the humane thing to do.

    I like this option.

I'm running a four character party so I'll just take her along through the Underdark and have her settle down in De'Arnise Keep while I hunt down Irenicus.

I've never removed her from the party in BG2, how does she take it? Does she get as bitter and pissy as Jaheira?

I accept her into the party at Spellhold and immediately kick her out. She isn't upset at all; she just agrees to meet up with you later. Contrast with ditching her in Chateau Irenicus, where she is really not happy about it.

    Good to know. Thanks.

It's cause her soul is gone, you see. She don't care nuthin' anymore.

Because she has no practical use\value to you anymore. A perfectly good reason for an evil character.

If you are playing a good or neutral one...That is trickier. You could ditch her after you get her soul back, I suppose. And justify it by keeping her out of harms way.

I absolutely cannot justify leaving her. She is always in my group after rescuing her. Only time I don't take her is if I start a new game in ToB which is also the only way I can justify taking Sarevok because I can't just kick someone for him. But even then more often then not I take Imoen anyways because I love her to death xD

Well I got to the Bodhi's dungeon and she was there, in a bad shape. I wanted her on my team, but as far as role playing goes, I was concerned if she'll make it out of this supposedly very dangerous labyrinth. I agreed for her to join me, needed to clear items from Nalia, so clicked to remove Imoen. Imagine my surprise when she just up and goes away to Copper Coronet. It's like, hello, Bodhi, you left the front door open when you told me to go to the basement. So actually Imoen is way safer if you don't take her. Not sure it's really a justification, though.

I feel like she should be permanently out of the game if you leave her in the dungeon.

That's kind of punishing players who have a full team (and not including Yoshimo) in their party when they go to Spellhold. Sure, we could drop one party member before boarding the boat to Brynnlaw, but if we've spent Chapters 2 and 3 building our team, it's a little rough to have to suddenly switch the team we're used to or else Imoen dies.

And then we do this again at the start of ToB! :s

She doesn't, I got her after going back to Alkathla.

just think you two split up and she got out on her own and she found a way back to the city on her own while you were in the underdark.

Justify? She's a frickin Bhaalspawn just waiting to stab you in the back when you least expect it to gain your essence. Take her down first as soon as she is expendable.

I can't. Without Imoen I feel that the story gets blander. My SoA parties are usually made of 5 characters so I can have an extra spot for sarevok. Also, it's really hard for me not to have Jaheira in the party due to her link to all the events in the game.

Yes, as evidenced by...nothing in SoA or ToB. In fact, she can't wait to get rid of her Bhaalspawn essence at the end of ToB.

I would agree with this except for her lack of any banter in SoA, and bugged banter in ToB without Ascension (which to my knowledge is still not EE compatible?). But Imoen becomes this dialogue black hole for Chapters 5-7 barring a few environmental comments. It's especially bad if we didn't do all quests back in Chapters 2 and 3 and do them once we return to Athkatla.

It's good that there are banter mods out there, at least, to give her more dialogue.

could have sworn the EE fixed the banter bug. and there is always the friendship mod for her whitch gives her talks in soa and tob.
  • ThacoBellThacoBell Member Posts: 12,235
There is a friendship mod? I've been using the romance mod just for banters.

fair warning you can't have both the romance and this installed at the same time. they are diffrent interpretations of the character sso it's best to use one or the other.

I just use the friendship track of the romance mod so Imoen isn't mute  I wont try to run them at the same time. Thanks

This is hardly ever an issue for me as I hardly ever play a thief and am forced to take her, which is hardly a chore. Whether this would change if they port in Glint I don't know as I like the look of his utility. Regardless, I am now playing a half-Orc fighter/thief and not sure I will take her. Planning on Aerie, Mazzy and Minsc. Though I will probably fold and take Imoen.
