And the were seperate in the Unearthed Arcana expansion to the first edition, as well. So no dual classing. It might make for more convenient programming, but ...

There is also a Barbarian warrior kit introduced the Complete Fighter's Handbook (published the year before the Barbarian Handbook). So, in 2nd Edition PnP rules, there were both, a Barbarian kit and a Barbarian class.

PS: there is a third barbarian class variant in the Oriental Adventures sourcebook. I think they picked the Kensai from there.
