Embarrassing (spoiler)

So I have been playing BG since it came out oh so many years ago. When I was young I passed over Durlags tower and Ulgoths beard, because I was a rash kid trying to get through the game quickly. I've sense been through the tower many times. My question though is this...how do I..you know..get to the werewolf island? There I said it, I've never been there. Go ahead, mock away.

Try going to one of those seaside towns :)
    This includes Ulgoth's Beard.

As spoiler free as I can give it. Only been there once myself. It's quite the magical place.

Do my weapons need to be silver or anything?
  • deltagodeltago Member Posts: 7,811
    No. You'll find

a dagger that can hurt it. That is right. A single dagger before talking to him

    Have fun.

    *SPOILER

You can find two weapons there, but you are better off bringing some + vs shapeshifter weapons

Hmm thanks everyone, going to attempt this tomorrow and I'm expecting a few reloads.

Honestly, in some 20+ playthroughs, I've only found that fight difficult with like one or two party combinations. There are a few other weapons and spells that work against him. Buff first. I guess I don't want to spoil too much; but its not THAT hard.

Well I do have Faldorn in the party, she has a thing for animals maybe they can work out a "compromise"

Try it with a solo cleric or Beastmaster...

Talk to Mendas in Ulgoth's Beard. I think there might be someone in the village who points you in his direction too, but I can't quite recall now (i.e., or maybe not).

I think I read in some other thread that this fight is harder in BGEE than BG....Or am I just getting old?

I was going to say something about using "sense" at the right spots helping you find the isle...but that would be snotty, and I'm certainly not that!

Seriously though I had quite a bit of trouble finding it myself. It's a light fun trip. Enjoy!

I seem to recall taking him out without too much trouble with a Wand of the Heavans, 2 Wands of Frost, a Magic Missiles, The Victor (ring of Red Wizards east of Larswood) and someone using the +3 against Shapeshifters sword.

Try not to spoil the encounter for someone who hasn't played it by giving out your uber-tactics. Way to leech the fun from the game.

The fact that (spoiler warnings) is plastered in the board name aside, I don't see how an extrapolated "Wands wreck stuff" is much of a spoiler.

    @Delvarian :

Save on another slot before going to the island.
So that you won't be blocked on it if you can't defeat the boss.

Better take with you the bastard sword +1+3 vs shapeshifters, a few offensive spells with you, and arrows with elemental damage (fire, acid, ...).

Oh I believe you! But soloing really isn't my thing. I like the party tactics and interaction too much. As I was saying on another thread, a bigger, slightly lower level party is often more capable than a higher level, smaller one. Solo being the ultimate extreme of that. In this case, once a few specifics are figured out, MOST combinations of PC and NPCs can win this fight fairly easily.

Complaining that Karoug is too hard for a solo Cleric is as lame as complaining that Drizzt is too easy for a couple of werebears.
  • DelvarianDelvarian Member Posts: 1,232
Ok so I'm fighting the werewolves, have the knife. I kill the lead one easily as well as all his followers except one, the greater wolfwere. He keeps healing far faster than I can dmg him, using both spells and the knife. Any advice?
  • MadhaxMadhax Member Posts: 1,416
@Delvarian Either own harder with the dagger (Storm Giant potion plus backstab?) or bring more weapons into the fray. The flaming sword from Durlag's Tower will work nicely, as does the bastard sword +3 vs shapeshifters.

It's all about coordinating a single burst of something like 66 fast damage. A backstab or nice crit with an effective weapon plus powerful single-target spells like Flame Strike or Flame Arrow should work.

There are other weapons you can distribute. Like Flametongue or Bastard Sword +1/+3 vs shapeshifting. Also think damage causing spells, anything with fire or acid, and don't forget your cleric(s).

@Erg - Yes, but the real question is, how would these werebears do against Karoug. Unfortunately @satyrion is the only one who could answer our question and sadly he is leaving the community
  • DelvarianDelvarian Member Posts: 1,232
    Werebears! That's the key!

Thanks everyone, grabbed Baldurans sword and gave him a beating.

Next question, how do I get rid of lycanthropy? Does killing Mendas end things? His quests are still in my log after he's dead.

In werewolf form he has 50% resistance to Fire, Acid, Electricity and Cold, but 0% resistance to Magic (so you may want take advantage of that).

His regeneration rate is 5 HP per second, so to kill him you just have to do more than 30 HP of damage per round. Not so difficult with the right weapons and spells for most party combinations.

Solo clerics and other unfortunate party combinations can eventually use plan B (i.e. it is still possible to successfully complete the island main quest without killing him).

Yes, killing Mendas should cure you as the lycanthropy script checks if Mendas is dead.

    So would Skulltrap be effective?

    What about Melf's Minute Meteors?

    So would Skulltrap be effective?

    What about Melf's Minute Meteors?

I've never tried myself, but Skulltrap should work.

Melf's Minute Meteors are more tricky as they should count as weapons instead of spells, so they should not work, unless they have a silver/cold iron component, but IIRC they also ignore/bypass most resistances, so I'm not sure. I will try to find out and will post the results.
