I agreed. When will the free rock be delivered? I'm already behind with my preparations for the Fine Rock Art exhibition in Baldur's Gate. One of my artists was delayed and last time I called, he was chilling in a warehouse and refused to come out...

Here's a silly answer that came to mind:

Maybe bassilisks actually *eat* stone. (They are a silicon based life-from, like the Horta from ST:OS, perhaps?) And their presence on the roof of Durlag's Tower is like a termite infestation. They are slowly destroying the tower from the outside in by *eating* it.

Maybe Durlag put them up there as a defensive trap, with some wards and magical controls in place, and had them "fed" by locking condemned prisoners up there to be "executed". Now, with Durlag gone, they have resumed their natural behavior of eating the tower. Until you, the hapless adventurer, decide to explore the roof of the building...

I would personally think that basilisks are sometimes used as guards. I'd think that Durlag brought them in to secure the upper levels of the tower.

As for what they eat, I'd surmise that they are magically kept alive. After all, what would the point be of making a tower that is protected and trapped for all time, if you have to employ someone to constantly feed the pets?

Either that or they feed off the occasional adventurer that wanders by. In that, they probably do eat stone. Or maybe they are herbivores and graze off of the weeds that grow between the stones?

There is no such thing as basilisks.

@Anduin didn't promise too much! The delivered free rock is of excellent quality! I will order all my rocks from Anduin now! If anyone is interested, I sell my basilisk; I don't need it anymore. Free shipping from Baldur's Gate!

@Anduin Do you have any comment on the recent bankruptcy of your foremost competitor, Mutamin Industries, after the CEO's alleged murder at the hands of a child of Bhaal?
  • AnduinAnduin Member Posts: 5,745
@kidcarnival I am glad the rocks were up to your obvious high standards! Good luck with your entry into the fine rock art exhibition!

On a secondary note. Is your Basalisk for sale a Battery Basalisk or a free roaming Basalisk?

@Scary_wizard For your insightfulness a pet rock has been teleported to your location! Please check under your feet.

Well, I have a rock on my desk from when I lived in Naples, Florida... Oh, I see it.
I will definitely like to be buying many rocks and basilisks from you, yes! Domain is on the Ethereal Plane. Payment information will come as soon as ethereal filchers have come back.

@tresset A good question. Mutamin was a Rock 'n' Roller in the stone sculpture business. He set the ball rolling on wide welfare reforms for the Basalisk with the customer bases growing awareness on how there sculptures are created, and there demand to the see the end of battery basalisk (the barbaric crating of Basalisks in boxes little larger than the basalisks themselves, from one job to the next) industry.

The free roaming Basalisks that Mutamin used created some outstanding gardens that the public still enjoy today... It was a sad day when we heard of his demise... However the world of stone masonry is less a cut throat world and more a blunt chisel to the forehead. His decision to use Ghouls for security to cut costs providing his workforce with reflective sunglasses was bad policy. Perhaps if he had spent his money on sunglasses, he would still be with us today...

On a plus note, business is booming as a result. I assure you this has nothing to do with a lack of competition, but due to our fine quality products. Please find a sample rock teleported gratis. Please check under your feet.

@Anduin: The exhibition was a huge success! The upper class of the Sword Coast admired the detailed artwork for hours!

My merchandise, according to recent reports, would be classified a "dead basilisk". But hey, it's cheap!
  • AnduinAnduin Member Posts: 5,745
@kidcarnival The barbarity to the common and greater Basalisk knows no bounds.... A pesky adventurer has possibly already raided the gullet, where the stomach acid, turns the minerals into the stones into gems... *sigh* I will send a cleric round imminently. Please find another rock, gratis, under your feet for the troubles.

@Anduin This will teach me to invite artists from Waterdeep... My reputation is forever tainted if I can't even ensure them they will be safe in the city. No paying travel expanses can make up for such a faux pax. I thank you kindly for the high quality rock, hopefully the success of my new gallery will make people forget about Ghaaaaaaaaaaargh's tragic accident in the warehouse.

@calmar An interesting question. I assure you that our Basilisks are summoned to location using only the finest wizarding ingredients to ensure our Basilisks arrive, to you, our customer, in perfect condition to render anyone or anything into the perfect sculpture!

How's the business going these days? I heard there is no money in basilisking anymore since those new-fangled cockatrices made petrification cheaply available to everyone.

@Anduin This pet rock you mention... Can it be trained to be a familiar? If so, what are the stats and abilities? Stone Skin, I presume? I would be interested in buying one for a lovely cleric lady who appreciates rock art.

@Anduin. I would LOVE to take you up on your offer.
The model I would like to use is the most outstanding entrepreneur on these boards. I believe, gazing at a statue of his magnificent stature would inspire me to do more with my life, to grasp what he has. The model is you btw.
Looking forward to seeing your work in seconds.

    Ah yes, the basilisk.

Well, according to the ecology of the basilisk, we get some interesting details out of it.

A basilisk's diet consists of small mammals, birds and reptiles, but they can eat shrubs and other plants or even stone if needed. It has the ability to consume the creatures it petrifies, as their crunching stomach acid can dissolve and extract nutrients from stone, but the process is very slow and inefficient, making them lazy and sluggish.

So those basilisks (which were probably trained as watch animals, being that they can be so trained, apparently) are probably eating birds up there. Hopefully pigeons. I really hate pigeons. Don't you hate them too? Durlag hated them, obviously.

And probably the spare crow or raven.

Now you know were Shale use to live.

Actually, to answer the original question:
Basilisks are aliens! They have the ability to levitate. Why do you think they are shaped like flying saucers?

If I have to fit in the mood of the topic, I'd say basilisks are not only guards but converters. They can convert clay golems, flesh golems, ogres, ogrillons(big folks) to stone golems. Effective strategy, isn't it?

If I have to be serious, I would say they are guards. Being on the roof shows that they are "anti-aircraft warefare" or "sneaky teleporting wizards destroyers".

The real question here is why Bhaldogs name has been changed to Samus? Witness protection perhaps? Does he/she know too much?

    Bhaal dog was petrified? Noooooooo......

@KidCarnival Your interest in the Pet rock as a familiar. I can say with absolute certainty that they make excellent familiars. They are effected by a never ending spell of Stoneskin. They are impossible to backstab. Immune to charm, poison, electrical attacks AND petrification. They are partially immune to fire, cold and acid (although they will crack eventually...) They can also render enemies unconscious with a sleep spell (when applied hard to the forehead). There only drawback is there extremely slow movement speed... When attacking it is quicker to throw them into the fray... But you will always be pleased with the results... However due to their awesome power, rock familiars can be ignored by enemies so that they can attack foes they stand a chance against... I hope this covers your query...

@Deltago Yes. Many a lady wishes to have my form visible from as many a vantage point as possible!

Thanks to the clever use of a Simulcrum spell, I can send you a stone sculpture of myself in SECONDS.

    Where would you like delivery?
