Given @bengoshi 's summon, I have to say I am a bit out and will likely be for a little while. One of these cases of "hmm, I got bored with the game" after playing too much. But I will be back in some time! :-)
Im a bit in the same boat as @booinyoureyes in that it has been a while since Ive played Bg, maybe 4 months? Strangely, I still like reading the game discussions though - but maybe a little less. Also, I dont suffer from restartitis, because I let the game lie until I figure out a really interesting charname/party that I will take all the way. When that happens I will probably be more interested in the game discussions again.
(I even plan to use mods for the first time :O Scs and NPC mod )
I really like the people on this forum at any rate, so I keep coming back. Only online community I know of where the majority dont froth-at-the-teeth due to spelling mistakes and can constructively contribute to any discussion
Well this 'legend' (not my words, thank you so much @bengoshi, ever generous) is surely not retiring. My relative absence can be attribute to the highy entertaining World Cup and maybe the lack of a nice playthrough I'm involved in atm. Mucho restartitis... Might continue my Ranger dualled to Cleric I had kind of abandoned, and start posting about him. Anyway I love both the forum and the game a lot, so even if I were to stop posting about my hopeless playthroughs, I'd still be around
Concerning @Isandir, I was actually planning on requesting him to do the portrait for me and Crevs' NPC mod ...
If this ever happens (I hope by some miracle you are reading this sir!), I am going to pay him even if it's not nearly as much as he deserves. He has real life commitments and his work is damn near top-notch. I have not seen anyone else get so close to the BG1 portrait art style.
Side note -- I still have to look for someone to do the BGII portrait as well. Different style, after all. If anyone could suggest me someone ... that would be appreciated.
@Quartz@Metalloman if only there was a program to "baldurize" photos or a tutorial or easy method or something... It's hard for me to bother someone else for portraits for the countless characters I dreamed up. May even be harder than finding photos in the first place.
I love reading these discussions a) because the general tone is so welcoming and friendly and b) because I'm always learning something new (like fact that wands are re-chargeable - obviously I don't read enough walkthroughs).
On the subject of walkthroughs, might there be some value in a newbies-only section for people who've just got the game and haven't read a walkthrough where they could share their discoveries and help to solve each others problems - just like when BG first came out and we were all hammering at the gates of Baldur's Gate and asking each other how on earth we were going to get in?
Anyway, I'll do my bit (for what it's worth) and try to post more often.
If anyone thinks the forum is dying, just look at the activity page... You'll see new people joining and reaching the first badges, the 5 posts badge, for instance, basically every single day.
Everyone should check the activity page anyway, lots of fun stuff happen there
This forum can't be dead - it's only been a day since I posted and there are 25 new posts. I don't need my stethoscope or an EEG machine to let me know life is still extant in this body of verbiage and wisdom.
The hell with the world cup for those who like to watch people kicking big round balls - I'm off to watch people hitting small green balls with instruments obviously not suited to the task! You may see a drop in my posting
@Metalloman the first part of my post was referring to the title of the thread - and giving my medical opinion that this forum is still alive and kicking. The second part was in response to all the comments about the soccer world cup, and how much I prefer tennis to soccer.
I've knocked around plenty of dead and dying forums in my time, and just saying, this ain't it. There's always something going on here, which I attribute to the many fine posters around, the rock solid foundation of Baldur's Gate being a great discussion piece, and the "like/agree/insightful" system, which makes it more interactive both with the site and with fellow forumites.
Nah it's not allowed to die! I've been in A LOT of forums over the years and never seen one I like as much as this one. It's been open and amazing since day one. I'm in the same boat as many others that I haven't had a chance to play a lot lately but I've been using the forums a lot more then Facebook. I prefer it here. Less drama, less asses, more fun! One like = one prayer. Yeah... Right...
Yeah, how can it die if we are preparing for the forum wedding?! How's it been progressing, @CaloNord , have you already ordered bards? Have you already asked Jansen family to make a turnip cake?
Exactly!! Musn't be allowed! Slowly! The bride has selected a dress made from the finest Kobold skins. She even left the little collars on. Jan Jansen has been invited but I fear the consequences... haha In all honesty, quite well! Haven't settled on a location yet but we think outdoor, given it will be in december and mid-40 degree C temps are the norm... So I shall, of course, be naked. :P
Have you already asked Jansen family to make a turnip cake?
Probably not, though the Jansen family was never much for keeping detailed records about anything. Except of course for their family recipes.
In fact that reminds me of the time when Cousin Yam, or Yam Jansen if you'd prefer, was the largest supplier or yams on the face of Faerun. She had the continent's yam production and distribution firmly in her tiny grasp and even the greatest men fell on their knees lest they be denied the subtle tastes that only a yam can provide.
Yam pudding, yam pies, yam fries, and even yam dyes. No yam ended up in your hands unless it had been approved by her.
Of course it wasn't long before her rule was challenged. Across the continent vegetable peddling merchants, who had once had been regarded as being free of vegetable-related harassment, found themselves under siege. Gangs roamed city streets and country roads looking to score wagons full of yams. Few merchants felt safe, and those that did had long since returned to the far more reliable sale of turnips, turnip recipes and turnip accessories.
Yam Yansen went into a fit of rage when she heard about bandits taking away these precious yams. How dare they do so! In a decisive move she ordered that all yam trade in the city cease until these perpetrators were brought before her. It wasn't long before Sweets McWheaty, the perpetrator of this horrid affair, was brought before Yam.
What only Yam Yansen knew was that it was Yam who had perpetrated the banditry, all so that Sweets would be brought before her. Sweets was the largest provider of Sweet Potato and Potato related products along most of (if not all of) the Sword Coast, and this was a business Yam had her eye on.
While all this was transpiring however merchants had been left in the streets with wagons full of yams. Faced with no prospect on when they could begin selling these products to distant lands again they began selling yams for other goods, including turnips.
As a young man at the time Uncle Scratchy had nothing but ambition and a stand full of turnips when he opened his stall on the fateful morning this occurred. Still, by days end he had only just begun to see serious turnip sales, while turnip salesman around him sold theirs off by the hundreds. Teaching him in the process two important lessons; persistence pays off, and eventually your customers will turnip.

He was so talented in making BG portraits, even custom ones (see mine, for instance)...

This forum has the yellow shirt.

(Edit: for turnips, i mean.)
