So, the speaker of our House of Representatives and member of the ruling Liberal regime was forced to repay the 5000 dollars of tax payers money she used to charter a helicopter to fly the 90 kilometers to a golf course to attend a party fund raiser because her tax payer funded limo wasn't fast enough. She was apparently well within her rights to do so and currently spends 1000 dollars a week on limos. Are politicians entitlements totally uncalled for?

Peter MacKay, Canada's former defense minister, once had a rescue helicopter sent to pick him up from a fishing trip and deliver him to an airport (so that he could do a press conference that day far away in another part of Canada). The helicopter ride alone cost taxpayers $16,000. So I guess it could be worse?

Well at least you guys don't have King Goodwill Zwelithini. A Zulu king, this moron has spent R2.8 million on transport in the last year. That's about to $23,0000, I don't even know why we have a Zulu king, like only a sixth of the population is Zulu and we all have to pay for their shitty king.

He is not part of the government, hardly anybody knows he exists and him and his family costs taxpayers R40 million a year. I say get rid of him or let the Zulu's pay for him if they want to keep him.

Holy Hell I did some research on kings in SA and we have 14 kingdoms and 10 kings. We spend over half a billion rand per year paying Kings, Chiefs, Headwomen/men and paying for their travel, security, and upkeep of their households. Only a third of the country lives in rural areas these people "rule" and the rest of us have to pay for them. WTF really just wtf.
The worst part is they are demanding more money, stating that kings are the same presidents and therefore should be payed the same, chiefs the same as mayors and so on.

    My country is insane.

Aboriginal tribes and communities are always difficult to deal with, regardless of the country.

You have to remember that they live in rural/remote areas because settlers pushed them from their ancestral land though, and since they live remotely, it does cost more money to travel to and from important events.

Does corruption run amok in their governing bodies? Sure. But they are also attempting to cling to a heritage and culture so that no one forgets their past.
  • CaloNordCaloNord Member Posts: 1,809
Oh my my. That is a lot of money. Couldn't that be better spent helping their entire community remember it's heritage and culture? Rather then being spent on a handful of people who've gone 'Hannnng on, you treated us like crap, now to make it better put out kings on the government payroll'?

@deltago I get that sure, but for the most part I think this is a simple vote grab by the ANC our dominate political party. Keep the kings happy and they can secure a good third of the countries voters. If the money was actually being used for their people I wouldn't have much of a problem, but when king Goodwill screws his budget by buying himself and each his 6 wives a brand new Mercedes-Benz E200.....
He owns multiple mansions and that travel budget I was complaining about, chartering luxury jets to fly to Swaziland really now whats the point?

The other thing is the Khoisan the true SA natives get shafted by our government, they were the ones who lost and continue to lose land. They are the only peoples in SA actually trying to uphold their old ways of life, I mean they largely still live as hunter gatherers.

The other huge problem with having leeches, I mean royals is the government does squat when they do something stupid. King Goodwill once again, incited pogroms against Zimbabwean immigrants, "Ok there were already a few pogroms, but he made more." with the old "they took our jobs!" line. Shops and homes were burnt, people where butchered or burnt alive and what happens to King Douchebag, nothing absolutely nothing.

Don't worry. Here the president goes by helicopter to work each day, which isn't too far, but bets you by far xD (anyway it's nothing compared to how they actually steal off the money but well).

In the US it is accepted that incumbent politicians use tax payer funds for trips that are claimed to be "state business" but are actually campaign stops. If there is a need for campaign finance reform, I really think it ought to start there.

Dont get me wrong. Corruption does run rampant in these types of communities and the finances should be looked at and audited like any other use of tax money.

Just do not always look at the bigger picture of R$ 40 million a year and think that number tells the whole story.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

It would be funny if it wasn't for the whole insanity of it all.

    http://m.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/truss-me-im-a-politician/2717891/

It absolutely STUNS me that the government can accuse pensioners of wasting their pension and super on cruises and holidays and rant on about the age of entitlement being over before getting back onto his CHARTERED 21 000 dollars plane to make the two hour flight back to Canberra. . .

WHERE do they get the balls!?

    *Outraged.*

This was an interesting article that turned up on my Facebook feed from the Australian Greens Party.

    http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/aug/14/expenses-rorts-point-to-the-widespread-rot-in-australias-democracy

Just read that and then give me your thoughts if you'd like. Because living here it's hard to tell what's what anymore. They've been hammering home these idiotic slogans for so long and totally ignoring the fact that we complain and complain, we write letters, we protest and they just keep on waddling along trying to destroy what was once a great country. In the latest poll, if an election was held tomorrow the Liberal National Party stands to lose THIRTY SIX seats of the 90 they have. Which would be one of the biggest thrashing in recent history here. Yet they continue plodding along with the Prime Minister INSISTING they've had 'Two great years of Governance.'

Not according 53% percent disapproval rating you have now. . . Only 37% thought he was doing a satisfactory job.

I feel like I'm slowly going insane.

I thought this was particularly awesome.

Basically people have been using "Lenny" (I guess its some kind of call bot) to waste telemarketers (and in this case political party callers) time

    I WANT IT!

    That. . . is. . . brilliant.
I feel sorry for some of the telemarketers though. They're just attempting to do their job and it is better to hang up on them right away than put them though something like this...

I look forward to the day when caller bots (which I have gotten a few times) face off against something like Lenny. You'd have to program them in to just hang up after a certain point. :)

Trump is our gift to the rest of the world. No matter what your politicians do, they're still not Trump.

"What, peeing in a cup? Well, at least he's not Trump."

    What about the UK?
We had a home secretary who's husband watched porn movies and claimed the cost back on MP's expenses.
